We have performed the current and voltage loading tests of resistive superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLS) based on $YBa_2$$Cu_3$$O_{7}$(YBCO) films with the diameter of 2 inch. The SFCL consists of meander-type YBCO stripes covered with 200 nm Au layer grown in situ for current shunt and heat dispersion at hot spots. The minimum quench current of an SFCL unit was about 25 Apeak. Seven SFCL units were connected in parallel fur the current load ing tests at power source of 100 $V_{rms}$$/2,000A_{rms}$. This SFCL units had maximum limiting current of 170 Apeak during the fault instant and then successfully controlled the fault current below 100 Apeak within 1~2 msec after short circuit. Increased short current also reduced the quench completion time with little change of current limiting characterization. We connected six SFCL units in series fur the voltage loading tests at power source of $1,200 V_{rms}$/170 $A_{rms}$ at this time. The shunt resistors were inserted into each SFCL unit to eliminate power imbalance originated from serial connection of SFCL units. Each SFCL unit was quenched simultaneously during the fault condition. The current increased up to 40 $A_{peak}$ and decreased to 14 $A_{peak}$ after 3 cycles. Quench was completed within 1 msec after the fault. We confirmed operating characteristics of 140 kVA($120 A_{rms}$$\times$ 1,200 $V_{rms}$) SFCL and presented the manufacturing possibility of 3.3 kV SFCL using 4 inch YBCO films.BCO films.lms.
In this paper, we studied the method for simultaneous quenching of a transformer type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) with two superconducting elements connected in series. Only an element between two elements of the transformer type SFCL was quenched like the case of the resistive type SFCL. By this quenching characteristics, the power burden of the superconducting element was increased. In order to solve this problem, we connected the neutral line between two superconducting elements and the center of secondary coils. The two elements were all quenched in the transformer type SFCL with a neutral line. As a result, the power burden of superconducting elements was decreased, so it was efficient for the increase of power capacity of the transformer type SFCL.
The study on power capacity increase of superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) is one of the most important researches to apply a SFCL in the power system. To achieve this, we thought that the unbalanced quenching problem generated in series connection of superconducting units should be solved. In this paper, we investigated the quenching characteristics of superconducting units in the transformer-type SFCL with or without the neutral line between secondary windings and superconducting units. In case of transformer-type SFCL without neutral line, the connection structure of superconducting units is identical to that of the resistive-type SFCL connected in series. Therefore, the unbalanced quenching was occurred by difference of critical current between superconducting units. However, in case of transformer-type SFCL with neutral line, the superconducting units with different critical current were simultaneously quenched. It was because the currents induced by secondary winding were separately flowed through the superconducting units. By these results, we confirmed that the resistances and consumption powers of the superconducting units were equally generated.
The power demand is steadily increasing due to rapidly develop of industrial field. The ratio of prospected increment of power consumption is over 2.2 % per year from 2007 to 2020 year. The superconducting fault current limiters(SFCLs) should be suggested to be one of promising machines to protect power grid. Four basis tests such as resistivity, short-circuit tests, ac losses and recovery time were investigated according to various reached maximum temperature, operating temperature. This paper deals with investigation of the various commercial high temperature superconductor for applying resistive type SFCLs.
We proposed the bridge type fault current limiter(FCL) using switching operation of high-Tc superconducting(HTSC) thin film. The proposed bridge type FCL consists of HTSC thin film, a diode bridge and a dc reactor. The controller for the operation of an interrupter is required in the conventional bridge type FCL to prevent the continuous increase of fault current after a fault happens. On the other hand, the proposed bridge type FCL can limit the fault current without the interrupter and the controller for its operation by the resistance generated when the gradually increased fault current exceeds HTSC thin film's critical current. We calculated the time when the gradually increased fault current started to be limited by the resistance generated in HTSC thin film after a fault happened and confirmed that it could be dependent on the amplitude of source voltage. The experimental results well agreed with the calculated ones from simulation.
As an preliminary study for the quench protection of high temperature superconducting (HTS) cable using superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL), experimental research was carried out. The test circuit was composed of Bi-2223/Ag HTS tape and a SFCL made of YBCO thin films. In the normal state, the applied current of 56 A, which was critical current of HTS tape, could be flown through the circuit without resistive loss. Increasing the currents, the quench development of both materials was investigated from the voltage signal acquired from the resistance of the quenched superconductor. Up to around 10 times of the critical current was applied to the HTS tape and the current limiting characteristics of SFCL were investigated. In addition, for the finding out the optimal operating condition of SFCL such as the numbers of elements, a shunt resistor was applied to the SFCL and quench characteristics were analyzed as well.
We investigated the operating characteristics of a flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiters according to the number of the serial connection each the superconducting element at the additive polarity winding of a transformer. This SFCL consists of two coils wound in parallel on the same iron core, and the secondary coil is connected to the elements in series. Operating characteristics can be controlled by adjusting the inductances and the winding directions of the coils. It turns ratio between the primary and the secondary coils is 63:21. The analysis of voltage, current, and resistance in serial connection each element was performed to increase the applied voltage of flux-lock type SFCL. When the applied voltage was 200/$\sqrt{3}[V_{rms}]$ with three elements connected in seres, the peak value of the line current increased up to 26,24[A]. On the other hands, resistive SFCL increased up to 36.35[A], under the same conditions. This enabled the flux-lock type SFCL to be easy to increase the capacity of power system.
In this paper, we analyzed the current limiting characteristics according to increase of source voltage in the flux-lock type high-Tc superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL). The flux-lock type SFCL consisted of two coils, which were wound in parallel each other through an iron core, and high-Tc superconducting (HTSC) element connected with coil 2 in series. The flux-lock type SFCL has the characteristics better in comparison with the resistive type SFCL because the fault current in the flux-lock type SFCL can be divided into two coils by the inductance ratio of coil 1 and coil 2. The fault current limiting operation of the flux-lock type SFCL can be different due to winding direction of the two coils. The winding method where the decrease of linkage flux between two coils in the accident happens is called the subtractive polarity winding and the winding method in case of the increase of linkage flux is called the additive polarity winding. The fault current limiting experiments according to the source voltage were performed for these two winding methods. Through the comparison and the analysis of the experimental data, we confirmed that the quench time was shorter, irrespective of the winding direction as the source voltage increased and that the fault current and the HTSC's resistance increased as the amplitude of the source voltage increased. The additive polarity winding made the fast quench time and the lower resistance of HTSC element in comparison with the subtractive polarity winding. The fault current of the subtractive polarity winding was larger than that of the additive polarity winding. In conclusion, we found that the additive polarity winding reduced the burden of SFCL because the quench time was shorter and the fault current was smaller than those of the subtractive polarity winding.
We fabricated and tested a resistive type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) based on BSCCO-2212 bulk coils. Each bulk coils of the SFCL was designed to have the rated voltage of 220 $V_{rms}$ and the critical current($I_C$) of 320$\sim$340 A at 77K. Ten components in series, make the SFCL having the rated voltage of 2.2 $kV_{rms}$ for equal quench test. The fault test was conducted at an input voltage of 2.2 $kV_{rms}$ and fault current of 25 $kA_{rms}$. In addition, we examined the endurance characteristics for all bulk coils through repeat fault test. Test results shows that the SFCL successfully limited the fault current of 25$kA_{rms}$ to below $7{\sim}8kA_{p}$ within minimum 1.1msec after fault occurred. All bulk coils quenched together upon faults and shared the rated voltage evenly. The endurance test results show an equivalent among repeat fault test. During the quench process, average temperature of all bulk coils did not exceed 250 K, and the SFCL was totally safe during the whole operation.
