  • In this paper, the incremental nonlinear dynamic analysis is used to evaluate the seismic performance of steel moment frame structures. To this purpose, three special moment frame structure with 5, 10 and 15 stories are designed according to the Iran's national building code for steel structures and the provisions for design of earthquake resistant buildings (2800 code). Incremental Nonlinear Analysis (IDA) is performed for 15 different ground motions, and responses of the structures are evaluated. For the immediate occupancy and the collapse prevention performance levels, the probability that seismic demand exceeds the seismic capacity of the structures is computed based on FEMA350. Also, fragility curves are plotted for three high-code damage levels using HASUS provisions. Based on the obtained results, it is evident that increase in the height of the frame structures reduces the reliability level. In addition, it is concluded that for the design earthquake the probability of exceeding average collapse prevention level is considerably larger than high and full collapse prevention levels.9.

  • Following a 5.8 magnitude earthquake on September 12, 2016 in Gyeongju Province, a magnitude 5.4 earthquake occurred in the northern region of Pohang City on November 15, 2017 in South Korea. Only 7.9 % of the building structures are earthquake-resistant, according to the recent survey conducted by the government agencies in October 2017. In this paper, the linear analysis seismic performance evaluation procedure of the existing school structures presented in the revised methodology(Seismic Performance Evaluation Procedure and Rehabilitation Manual for School Facilities) was introduced. In this paper, the linear analysis evaluation procedure presented in the revised methodology was introduced and the seismic performance index of the example structure was evaluated using the linear analysis evaluation procedure. The seismic retrofit was verified by the linear and nonlinear dynamic analyses using Perform 3D. The analysis results show that the dissipated inelastic energy is concentrated on the retrofitted shear wall and the maximum inter-story drift of the stadium model structure with damping system satisfies the requirement of the current code.

  • Korea is considered to be immune from the earthquake hazard because it is located far away from the active fault. However, recent earthquake caused a loss of lives and economical loss worldwide. Hence there has been raised an importance of the earthquake resistant design for various infrastructures. In this research, the seismic design and evaluation criterion for RC bridge pier were proposed from the experimental results of 82 circular RC bridge piers tested in domestic and aboard. New seismic criterion was introduced the limited ductile design provision suitable to Korean peninsula, which would be classified as a low or moderate seismic region. In addition, further important topic for the seismic safety of RC bridge piers in Korea is the seismic performance enhancement of RC bridge piers, which were designed and constructed before the 1992 seismic design provision. Therefore, the proposed seismic performance evaluation criterion could be very useful to judge seismic retrofit need or not according to the residual seismic performance of the RC bridge piers. Also, it could reduce an uncertainty for the safety of the infrastructure under earthquakes.

  • In this research, an earthquake-resistant structural system consisting of a pin-connected steel frame and a bracing with metallic fuses is proposed. Contrary to the conventional braced frames, the main structural elements are deemed to remain elastic under earthquakes and the seismic energy is efficiently dissipated by the damper-braces with an amplification mechanism. The superiority of the proposed damping system lies in easy manufacture, high yield capacity and energy dissipation, and an effortless replacement of damaged fuses after earthquake events. Furthermore, the stiffness and the yield capacity are almost decoupled in the proposed damper-brace which makes it highly versatile for performance-based seismic design compared to most other dampers. A special attention is paid to derive the theoretical formulation for nonlinear behavior of the proposed damper-brace, which is verified using analytical results. Next, a direct displacement-based design procedure is provided for the proposed system and an example structure is designed and analyzed thoroughly to check its seismic performance. The results show that the proposed system designed with the provided procedure satisfies the given performance objective and can be used for developing highly efficient low-damage structures.

  • This paper firstly proposed high performance composite columns for cold-region infrastructures using ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) and ultra-high strength steel (UHSS) Q960E. Then, 24 square UHPC-filled UHSS tubes (UHSTCs) at low temperatures of -80, -60, -30, and 30℃ were performed under axial loads. The key influencing parameters on axial compression performance of UHSS were studied, i.e., temperature level and UHSS-tube wall thickness (t). In addition, mechanical properties of Q960E at low temperatures were also studied. Test results revealed low temperatures improved the yield/ultimate strength of Q960E. Axial compression tests on UHSTCs revealed that the dropping environmental temperature increased the compression strength and stiffness, but compromised the ductility of UHSTCs; increasing t significantly increased the strength, stiffness, and ductility of UHSTCs. This study developed numerical and theoretical models to reproduce axial compression performances of UHSTCs at low temperatures. Validations against 24 tests proved that both two methods provided reasonable simulations on axial compression performance of UHSTCs. Finally, simplified theoretical models (STMs) and modified prediction equations in AISC 360, ACI 318, and Eurocode 4 were developed to estimate the axial load capacity of UHSTCs at low temperatures.

  • In recent years, researches on various communication methods have been conducted, particularly on OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) and CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) methods, as the use of underwater communication increases. While OFDM is, in general, advantageous in that it is resistant to Doppler in the water and it enables a high-speed communication, CDMA is resistant to frequency selective fading in the water and it can reduce energy consumption. Therefore, in this paper, we performed experiments in the shallow water in Western Sea of Korea to analyze the performance of OFDM and CDMA communication systems in the underwater channel environment. The maximum delay spread and Doppler spread were drawn by using the data obtained from the real sea area in order to analyze the underwater channel environment characteristics of the shallow water in Western Sea of Korea. The communication performances of OFDM and CDMA are shown as coded BER (Bit Error Rate) according to the variation of the maximum delay spread and the Doppler spread, respectively. The result of the analysis show that the OFDM method has more resistant performances to the underwater channel environment changes than the CDMA method.

  • Anonymity is the one of main reasons for substantial improvement of Internet. It encourages various users to express their opinion freely and helps Internet based distributed systems vitalize. But, anonymity can cause unexpected threats because personal information of an online user is hidden. Especially, distributed systems are threatened by Sybil attack, where one malicious user creates and manages multiple fake online identities. To prevent Sybil attack, the traditional solutions include increasing the complexity of identity generation and mapping online identities to real-world identities. But, even though the high complexity of identity generation increases the generation cost of Sybil identities, eventually they are generated and there is no further way to suppress their activity. Also, the mapping between online identities and real identities may cause high possibility of losing anonymity. Recently, some methods using online social network to prevent Sybil attack are researched. In this paper, a new method is proposed for extracting a user's system-wide Sybil-resistant trust value by using the properties embedded in online social network graphs. The proposed method can be categorized into 3 types based on sampling and decision strategies. By using graphs sampled from Facebook, the performance of the 3 types of the proposed method is evaluated. Moreover, the impact of Sybil attack on nodes with different characteristics is evaluated in order to understand the behavior of Sybil attack.

  • In this study, Enterococcus faecalis BMSE-HMP005 isolated from human breast milk demonstrated antimicrobial effects against multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial strains. The bacteriocin produced by E. faecalis BMSE-HMP005 was fractionated using reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. This fraction showed antimicrobial effects against both gram-positive and gram-negative MDR bacteria. No hemolytic reactions were observed. E. faecalis BMSEHMP005 was resistant to vancomycin; however, kanamycin, ampicillin, and erythromycin showed minimum inhibitory concentrations that were lower than the acceptable range provided by the European Food Safety Authority. For artificial gastric juice and bile acid, the survival rates were 98.67% and 95.70%, respectively. These results show the potential utility of E. faecalis BMSE-HMP005 as a probiotic with remarkable antimicrobial effects against MDR bacteria.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of infection control education for families of patients infected with vancomycin resistant enterococcus (VRE). Method: Forty family members of VRE patients were chosen from a university hospital and assigned to the experimental or control group. The experimental group was provided infection control education that consisted of one-on-one instruction using an information booklet, hand-washing video, and demonstration of hand washing practice. Dependent variables were self-reported knowledge and performance of VRE infection control measures, and the number of hand washings when entering and leaving patients' rooms. Results: Knowledge and performance scores were significantly higher for the experimental group compared to the control group. The experimental group washed their hands significantly more often when entering and leaving patients' rooms than the control group. Conclusion: Infection control education for family members of VRE patients was effective in improving knowledge and performance of infection control measures as well as improving the practice of hand washing. Further investigation is needed on the effects of infection control education for families on the actual VRE colonization and/or infection rate.
