Objectives: The present study aimed to evaluate the shaping ability of 2 thermally treated nickel-titanium reciprocating systems in simulated curved canals. Materials and Methods: Forty simulated canals were prepared to apical size 25 using Reciproc Blue R25 (VDW) and WaveOne Gold Primary (Dentsply Sirona) instruments. Standard pre- and post-preparation images were taken and superimposed. The removal of resin material was measured at 5 standard points: the canal orifice, halfway between the canal orifice and the beginning of the curve, the beginning of the curve, the apex of the curve, and the end-point of the simulated canal. The data were analysed using the independent sample t-test with a 5% significance threshold. Results: The canals in which Reciproc Blue R25 was used showed a significantly greater widening than those in which WaveOne Gold was used at 4 of the 5 measurement points (p < 0.05). The Reciproc Blue R25 instrument removed significantly more resin from the inner aspect of the curve at 2 of the 5 points and similar amounts at the remaining 3 points. At the 2 apical points, there was no significant difference between the Reciproc Blue R25 and WaveOne Gold Primary instruments. Conclusion: Both instruments respected the original canal anatomy; however, WaveOne Gold resulted in a more conservative shape with less transportation.
I. Objectives This study was done to evaluate which type of Ni-Ti instrument be able to perform canal shape well in the simulated canal with abrupt curvature near it's apex. II. Materials and Methods A total of 96 simulated root canals were made in epoxy resin(EPOXICURETM, BUEHLER, USA), #15 finger spreader (MANI, Japan) were used as root canal templates. The simulated root canal were made with radius of curvature of 1.5 mm, 3.0 mm, 4.0 mm, 6.0 mm respectively, and angle of curvature of all simulate camals was 90 degree.(omitted)
Objectives: Nickel-titanium (Ni-Ti) rotary instruments have some unexpected disadvantages including the tendency to screw-in to the canal. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of root canal curvatures on the screw-in effect of Ni-Ti rotary files. Materials and Methods: A total of 80 simulated root canals in clear resin blocks were used in the study. Canals with curvature of 0, 10, 20 and 30 degrees were instrumented with ProTaper instruments SX, S1, S2 and a ProFile of #25/0.06 to 1.0-2.0 mm beyond the initial point of root curvature. The screw-in force was measured with a specially designed device while canal was instrumented with a ProFile of #30/0.06 at a constant speed of 300 rpm. The data were subjected to one-way ANOVA and Scheffe multiple range test for post-hoc test. Results: Larger degree of canal curvature generated significantly lesser screw-in forces in all groups (p < 0.001). Conclusions: More attention needs to be paid when using rotary instruments in canals with less curvature than canals with more curvatures to prevent or reduce any accidental overinstrumentation.

This study was conducted to evaluate the insertion depth of Buchanan plugger after shaping by various Ni-Ti rotary files. It was conducted to determine which size of plugger are appropriate, when root canals are shaped with Ni-Ti rotary files and obturated by Continuous wave of condensation technique. Two type of eighty simulated resin blocks were used : J-shaped and straight shaped canal. The simulated canals were instrumented by ProTaper and ProFile. Buchanan pluggers were inserted into the canal, and then the image was recorded to scanner. The distance from the apex of the canal to the plugger tip was measured by image analysis program. Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA followed by Scheffe's test. The results were as follows 1. In straight canal finished up to ProTaper F2 and F3 file, F and FM pluggers were inserted more than 5 mm short of working length. 2. In J-shaped canal finished up to ProTaper F2 file, F pluggers were inserted more than 5 mm short of working length. Finished up to ProTaper F3 file. F and FM pluggers were inserted more than 5 mm short of working length. 3. In straight and J-shaped canal finished up to ProFile .06/#20 and .06/#25, any of Buchanan plugger could not be inserted more than 5 mm short of working length. These results suggest that canals shaped by ProTaper could be obturated by Continuous wave of condensation technique with F and FM size Buchanan plugger.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the sealing ability of the Microseal$^{(R)}$, which was new obturation system made by Tycom company, U.S.A. Forty-five extracted single-rooted human teeth were resected at cemento-enamel junction and divided three groups. All canals were prepared using Profile system, and then each group was obturated by lateral condensation technique (group 1), vertical condensation technique (group 2) and Microseal$^{(R)}$ condensation technique (group 3) with root canal sealer. Teeth were immersed in resorcinol-formaldehyde resin for 5 days at $4^{\circ}C$ and the resin was allowed to polymerize completely for 4 days at room temperature. Teeth were resected horizontally at 1 mm (level I), 2 mm (level II), 3 mm (level III) from the anatomical root apex using low speed microtome and examined with Image analyzer (IBASR, Zeiss co., Germany.) at ${\times}25$ magnification. The gab between the canal wall and the filling material, which was filled with the resin, was measured at each of the three levels. Each ratio of leakage was expressed percentage by calculating the ratio of the area of the resin to the total area of the canal and was analyzed statistically (one-way ANOVA). The results were as follows; 1. The mean ratio of leakage (%) was 6.46% at group 1, 3.06% at group 2, 11.27% at group 3. 2. When evaluating the ratio of leakage at the three levels, there was level I> level II> level III in all groups. Especially, the difference between level I and level III was statistically significant (p<0.05). 3. When evaluating the ratio of leakage at the three groups, there was group 3> group 1> group 2 at all levels. Especially the difference between group 2 and group 3 was statistically significant (p<0.05).

The purpose of our study is to evaluate the ability of nickel-titanium(NiTi) files in maintaining the original curvature of a curved root canal during canal preparation. Curved canals on translucent resin blocks were prepared with NiTi and stainless steel files, and they were placed at the platform which can reproduce the same position. The unprepared and prepared canal forms were accurately compared by double exposure technique of photography. By finite element methods we also analyzed stress distributions of NiTi and stainless steel files in a curved canal. The results were as follows : 1. NiTi files were excellent in maintaining the original curvature of a curved canal than stainless steel files after canal preparation. 2. The results of canal preparation with these files were well verified by the analysis of stress distributions using finite element methods.
Objectives: This study evaluated the effects of adhesion variables such as the priming concepts of canal wall and the curing modes of adhesives on the sealing ability of a resin-based root canal filling system. Materials and Methods: Apical microleakage of the Resilon-RealSeal systems filled with 3 different combinations of adhesion variables was compared with the conventional gutta-percha filling using a dye penetration method. Experimental groups were SEDC, Resilon (Resilon Research LLC) filling with self-etch RealSeal (SybronEndo) primer and dual-cure RealSeal sealer; NELC, Resilon filling with no etching, Scotchbond Multi-Purpose (3M ESPE) primer application and light-curing adhesive; and TELC, Resilon filling with Scotchbond Multi-Purpose primer and adhesive used under total etch / wet bonding and lightcure protocols. GPCS, gutta-percha filling with conventional AH26 plus sealer, was the control group. Results: The median longitudinal dye penetration length of TELC was significantly shorter than those of GPCS and SEDC (Kruskal-Wallis test, p < 0.05). In the cross-sectional microleakage scores, TELC showed significant differences from other groups at 2 to 5 mm from the apical foramen (Kruskal-Wallis test, p < 0.05). Conclusions: When a resin-based root canal filling material was used, compared to the self-etching primer and the dual-cure sealer, the total etch/wet-bonding with primer and light-curing of adhesive showed improved apical sealing and was highly recommended.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the ability of ProTaper Gold (PTG, Dentsply Maillefer) in maintaining the original profile of root canal anatomy. For that, ProTaper Universal (PTU, Dentsply Maillefer) was used as reference techniques for comparison. Materials and Methods: Twenty simulated curved canals manufactured in clear resin blocks were randomly assigned to 2 groups (n = 10) according to the system used for canal instrumentation: PTU and PTG groups, upto F2 files (25/0.08). Color stereomicroscopic images from each block were taken exactly at the same position before and after instrumentation. All image processing and data analysis were performed with an open source program (FIJI). Evaluation of canal transportation was obtained for two independent canal regions: straight and curved levels. Student's t test was used with a cut-off for significance set at ${\alpha}=5%$. Results: Instrumentation systems significantly influenced canal transportation (p < 0.0001). A significant interaction between instrumentation system and root canal level (p < 0.0001) was found. PTU and PTG systems produced similar canal transportation at the straight part, while PTG system resulted in lower canal transportation than PTU system at the curved part. Canal transportation was higher at the curved canal portion (p < 0.0001). Conclusions: PTG system produced overall less canal transportation in the curved portion when compared to PTU system.
The experimental study was made to evaluate the influence of retentive grooves on the canal wall upon the retention of post, using different type of cements. Ninety periodontally involved anterior teeth were extracted and divided into six groups of 15 teeth. The groups were labeled as follows: Group I: Dentatus post cemented zincphosphate cement into post hole with smooth wall. Group II: Dentatus post cemented with zincphosphate cement into post hole with retentive grooves. Group III: Dentatus post cemented with glass-ionomer cement into post hole with smooth wall. Group IV: Dentatus post cemented with glass-ionomer cement into post hole with retentive grooves. Group V: Dentatus post cemented with composite resin adhesive into post hole with smooth wall. Group VI: Dentatus post cemented with composite resin adhesive into post hole with retentive grooves. The tensile strength was tested by an Instron type tester with cross-head speed of 5mm per minute. The results were as follows: In the group without retentive grooves, three kinds of cement have little effect upon retentive capacity of Dentatus post. The Dentatus post cemented on the canal wall with retentive grooves is more retentive than Dentatus post without retentive grooves.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of materials and sizes of files on canal transportation in a curved canal. The stress and the strain energy of files of two kinds of materials (stainless steel and NiTi) and five sizes (No. 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40) in a curved canal were analyzed by a finite element program, NASTRAN. Curved canals in transparent resin blocks were instrumented with the 10 kinds of files, and the degree of canal transportation obtained by double exposure technique of photography was compared with the analysis by the finite element method. The results were as follows : 1. The stress of a file in a curved canal increased from the file body to the file tip. 2. The stress of a stainless steel file was about 2.5 times greater than that of a same-sized NiTi file. 3. The stress distributions of files of an identical material were the same, and the strain energies of files of an identical material increased as the size of files increased. 4. The strain energy of a No. 35 NiTi file was about the same as that of a No. 20 stainless steel file. 5. The degree of canal transportation by a stainless steel file was greater than that by a same-sized NiTi file. The degree of canal transportation generally increased as the size of a file increased. 6. The degree of canal transportation of a No. 35 NiTi file was about the same as that of a No. 20 stainless steel file.
