The mechanical properties of Ni-Fe alloy were varied with the current type, current density and bath conditions such as concentrations and temperature. The effect of electroplating parameters on the surface hardness, mechanical strength, residual stress and wear properties were investigated. The mechanical properties of electrodeposits with PC plating is superior to those with DC plating. Ni-Fe electrodeposits with PC has approximately 50% lower residual stress than that of DC plating. The tensile strength of PC electroplated specimen was 15% higher than that of DC electroplated specimen. The wear resistance of PC specimen was 30% improved relative to that of DC specimen.

Recently, carbon fiber reinforced plastic(CFRP) composite materials have been widely used in various fields of engineering because of its advanced properties. Also, CFRP composite materials offer new design flexibilities, corrosion and wear resistance, low thermal conductivity and increased fatigue life. However CFRP composite materials are susceptible to impact damage due to their lack of through-thickness reinforcement and it causes large drops in the load-carrying capacity of a structure. Therefore, the impact damage behavior and subsequently load-carrying capacity of impacted composite materials deserve careful investigation. In this study, the residual strength and impact characteristics of plain-woven CFRP composites with impact damage are investigated under axial tensile test. By using obtained residual strength and Tan-Cheng failure criterion, residual strength of CFRP laminate with arbitrary fiber angle were evaluated.
In order to obtain high bearing capacity and good ductility simultaneously, a structural column with hybrid normal and high strength steel (HNHSS) welded box section has been developed. Residual stress is an important factor that can influence the behaviour of a structural member in steel structures. Accordingly, the magnitudes and distributions of residual stresses in HNHSS welded box sections were investigated experimentally using the sectioning method. In this study, the following four box sections were tested: one normal strength steel (NSS) section, one high strength steel (HSS) section, and two HNHSS sections. Based on the experimental data from previous studies and the test results of this study, the effects of the width-to-thickness ratio of plate, yield strength of plate, and the plate thickness of the residual stresses of welded box sections were investigated in detail. A unified residual stress model for NSS, HSS and HNHSS welded box sections was proposed, and the corresponding simplified prediction equations for the maximum tensile residual stress ratio (${\sigma}_{rt}/f_y$) and average compressive residual stress ratio (${\sigma}_{rc}/f_y$) in the model were quantitatively established. The predicted magnitudes and distributions of residual stresses for four tested sections in this study by using the proposed residual stress model were compared with the experimental results, and the feasibility of this proposed model was shown to be in good agreement.

Typical confidence intervals for a mean or mean residual life (MRL) are centered about the mean or mean residual life. We discuss novel confidence intervals that produce statements like "we are 95% confident that the MRL function, e(t), is greater than a prespecified $\mu_o$ for all t in the interval [0, $\hat{\theta})$)" where $\hat{\theta}$ is determined from the sample data, confidence level, and $\mu_o$. Also, we can have statements like 'we are 95% confident that the MRL of population 1, namely $e_1$(t), is greater than the MRL of population 2, $e_2$(t), for all t in the interval [0, $\hat{\theta}$)" where $\hat{\theta}$ is determined from the sample data and confidence level. We illustrate these one and two sample confidence intervals on internal bonds (tensile strengths) for an important modem engineered wood product, called medium density fiberboard (MDF), used internationally.

Carbon/epoxy composite(CFRP) coupons previously damaged by low velocity impact were tested under static tensile loading and microscope progress of damage was characterized by ultrasonic C-scan, Scanning Acoustic Microscopy (SAM) and Acoustic Emission(AE) techniques which were based on the application of elastic waves. The degress of impact damage has been correlated with the AE activity during monotonic or loading/unloading tensile testing as well as the result of ultrasonic test. The coupons were subjected to impact velocities ranged from 0.71 to 2.17 m/sec, which introduced the amount of damage rated as 0%, 10%, 30%, and 50% with reference to the total absorbed energy at fracture. Special attention was paid to determine optimal AE parameters to characterize the microscopic fracture process and to predict the residual strength of composite laminates. AE RMS voltage during the early stage of tensile loading was found an effective parameter to quantify the degree of impact damage. It was also found that the Felicity ratio is closely related to the stacking sequence and the residual strength of the CFRP laminates.

The structural deterioration of concrete structures due to reinforcement corrosion is a major worldwide problem. Service life of the age-degraded concrete structures is governed by the protective action provided by the cover concrete against the susceptibility of the reinforcement to the corrosive environment. The corrosion of steel would result in the various corrosion products, which depending on the level of the oxidation may have much greater volume than the original iron that gets consumed by the process of corrosion. This volume expansion would be responsible for exerting the expansive radial pressure at the steel-concrete interface resulting in the development of hoop tensile stresses in the surrounding cover concrete. Once the maximum hoop tensile stress exceeds the tensile strength of the concrete, cracking of cover concrete would take place. The cracking begins at the steel-concrete interface and propagates outwards and eventually resulting in the through cracking of the cover concrete. The cover cracking would indicate the loss of the service life for the corrosion-affected structures. In the present paper, analytical models have been developed considering the residual strength of the cracked concrete and the stiffness provided by the combination of the reinforcement and expansive corrosion products. The problem is modeled as a boundary value problem and the governing equations are expressed in terms of the radial displacement. The analytical solutions are presented considering a simple 2-zone model for the cover concrete viz. cracked or uncracked. A sensitivity analysis has also been carried out to show the influence of the various parameters of the proposed models. The time to cover cracking is found to be function of initial material properties of the cover concrete and reinforcement plus corrosion products combine, type of rust products, rate of corrosion and the residual strength of the cover concrete. The calculated cracking times are correlated against the published experimental and analytical reference data.

Two High Tensile Strength Steel (EH47) plates with thickness of 70 mm were butt-welded together by multi-pass Submerged Arc Welding (SAW), also the hardness and welding residual stress were investigated experimentally. Based on Thermal-Elastic-Plastic Finite Element (TEP FE) computation, the thermal cycles during entire welding process were obtained, and the HAZ hardness of multi-pass butt welded joint was computed by the hardenability algorithm with considering microstructure evolution. Good agreement of HAZ hardness between the measurement and computational result is observed. The evolution of each phase was drawn to clarify the influence mechanism of thermal cycle on HAZ hardness. Welding residual stress was predicted with considering mechanical response, which was dominantly determined by last cap welds through analyzing its formation process.

It has been known that tensile residual stresses occurring by the thermal expansion coefficient mismatch between fiber and matrix is a cause of the weak strength of metal matrix composites(MMCs). In order to solve this problem, TiNi alloy fiber was used as a reinforced material in TiNi/A16001 shape memory alloy composite in this study. TiNi alloy fiber improves the tensile strength of the composite by causing compressive residual stress in matrix on the basis of its shape memory effect. Pre-strain was imposed to generate the compressive residual stresses inside the TiNi/A16001 shape memory alloy composites. AE technique was used to quantify the microscopic damage behavior of the composite at high temperature. The effect of applied pre-strains on the AE behavior was also evaluated.

In this study, the effect of hybrid fiber reinforcement on the residual strength and impact resistance of high-strength cementitious composites exposed to high temperatures was investigated. A cementitious composites was manufactured in which 0.15 vol% of polypropylene fiber (PP) and 1.0 vol% of smooth steel fiber (SSF) were double-mixed, and a residual strength test was conducted while thermal stress was applied by heating test, and then a high-velocity impact test was performed. In the case of general cementitious composites, the rear surface is damaged due to explosion and low tensile strength during high temperature or impact, while hybrid fiber reinforced cementitious composites can repeatedly absorb and distribute stress until multiple fibers are damaged to suppress the propagation of impact and resistance to explosion. Therefore, this study analyzed the residual strength of cementitious composites exposed to high temperatures depending on whether hybrid fibers were mixed or not, and collected research data on fracture behavior through high-speed impact tests to evaluate impact resistance and mechanical properties.

It is well known that during the oxygen cutting process residual thermal stresses are produced in weldment. The local non-uniform heating and subsequent cooling which takes place during any welding process causes complex thermal strains and stresses to finally lead to residual stresses exceed to the yield stress. High tensile stresses combined with applied structural load in the region near the welded joint can given rise to distortion brittle fracture change of the fatigue strength and stress corrosion cracking. The appropriate treatment of the welded component which reduces the peak of he welding residual stresses is believed to lower risk of the fracture during the service of the structure. In this study the impact loading in oxygen cutting frame was applied to reduce the residual stress. After applying the impact loading redistribution of resid-ual stress was measured by cutting method and the effect of fatigue was tested.
