  • This paper analyzes decorrelating detector for synchronous packet CDMA communications where a set of quasiorthogonal code waveforms are generated from a common code by assigning distinct initial code phases to all users. In this analysis, we characterize the residual multiple-access interference (MAI) caused by possibletiming offsets when synchronous and simultanceous packet transmissions are on the reverse link of centralize networks. Also, to show feasibility of decorrelating detector employing the common code, we further investigate its robustness against the multipath channel. It is demonstrated that the decorrelating detector greatly reduces the residual MAI to the order of N$^{-2}$ , N number of chips/bit, and yields significant performance gain compared to the single user detector.

  • A two-stage method for damage detection in truss systems is proposed. In the first stage, a modal residual vector based indicator (MRVBI) is introduced to locate the potentially damaged elements and reduce the damage variables of a truss structure. Then, in the second stage, a differential evolution (DE) based optimization method is implemented to find the actual site and extent of damage in the structure. In order to assess the efficiency of the proposed damage detection method, two numerical examples including a 2D-truss and 3D-truss are considered. Simulation results reveal the high performance of the method for accurately identifying the damage location and severity of trusses with considering the measurement noise.

  • In long-haul optical communication system consisting of standard single-mode fiber spans and fiber amplifiers, such as the erbium-doped fiber amplifier, performance is deteriorated by signal distortion due to chromatic dispersion and nonlinearity of the fiber. A combination of dispersion management and optical phase conjugation is an effective technique to compensate for the distortion. In an optical link configured by this combination, a dispersion map mainly affects the compensation of the distorted optical signals. This paper proposes new dispersion maps configured by the decaying or expanding distribution of residual dispersion per span (RDPS) in a dispersion-managed link combined with a midway optical phase conjugator. The effect of the proposed dispersion maps on the compensation for distorted 24 channel × 40 Gbps wavelength-division multiplexed signals was assessed through numerical simulation. It was confirmed that all the proposed dispersion maps are most appropriate for the compensation and, furthermore, for the flexibility of link configuration than conventional links.

  • This study evaluated electrical characteristics of the manufactured arcing horn whose rated voltage and nominal discharge current were 18kV and 2.5kA, respectively. In this study, residual voltage and lightning impulse flashover voltage were examined. The arcing horn showed excellent electrical characteristics that residual voltage and lightning impulse flashover voltage were 55kV below and 121kV at 115mm, respectively. Therefore the manufactured arcing Horn is considered that it would show good performance for protecting electrical wires and line post insulators from lightning impulse, if it were applied to real fields.

  • In a structure, many components are fastened together using bolts, nuts and rivets through drilled holes. Not only do these fastened joints enable easy assembly and dismantling, they are also able to transfer as well as to distribute loads applied onto the structures. The major drawback of such connections, however, is that the fatigue life of the components is reduced by the presence of the hole since the stress concentration around the hole is increased. In addition, the hole drilling process itself may introduce defects or roughness at the surfaces of the hole that may cause further decrease in fatigue performance of the components. For applications where fatigue loadings are important, one way to compensate the decrease in fatigue life of the components is by introduction of beneficial compressive residual stress around the hole using cold working. The material used for this research were A12024-T351 and A17050-T7451 using the primary member of aircraft. We present, In this paper, the characteristics of coldworking by evaluation of the hole expansion ratio, residual stress distribution, and fatigue properties.

  • In the past, Alloy 600 nickel-based alloys have been widely used in steam generators. However, most of them have been replaced by thermally treated alloy 690 tubes in recent years because mill annealed alloy 600 materials are known to be susceptible to stress corrosion cracking. Unlike this general perception, some steam generators using mill annealed alloy 600 tubes show excellent performance even though they are designed, manufactured, and operated in the same way. Therefore, various analyses were carried out to determine causes for the degradation of steam generators. Based on the general stress corrosion cracking mechanism, tube material susceptibility, residual stress, and sludge deposits of steam generators were compared to identify factors affecting stress corrosion cracking. It was found that mill annealed alloy 600 steam generator tubes showed higher resistance to stress corrosion cracking when the amount of sludge deposits on tube surface was smaller and residual stress generated during the fabrication was lower.

  • We propose a framework called Stacked Gated Recurrent Unit - Infrequent Residual Analysis (SG-IRA) that detects anomalies in time-series data that can be trained on streams of raw sensor data without any pre-labeled dataset. To enable such unsupervised learning, SG-IRA includes an estimation model that uses a stacked Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) structure and an analysis method that detects anomalies based on the difference between the estimated value and the actual measurement (residual). SG-IRA's residual analysis method dynamically adapts the detection threshold from the population using frequency analysis, unlike the baseline model that relies on a constant threshold. In this paper, SG-IRA is evaluated using the industrial control systems (ICS) datasets. SG-IRA improves the detection performance (F1 score) by 5.9% compared to the baseline model.

  • This paper presents an analysis of asynchronous multicarrier-code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) uplink systems over frequency-selective multipath fading channels when the frequency offsets (FOs) of all users are random variables and the frequency offset for the desired user is compensated. The effect of a residual frequency offset(RFO) on the average bit error rate (BER) is evaluated by the semi-analytical method, then the approximated BER performance is obtained as a closed-form expression. Moreover, the signal to noise ratio (SNR) loss caused by RFO is evaluated. Derived results show that the performance degradation due to RFO is negligible if the estimation error of RFO for the desired user is less than the normalized value of 0.1.
