Fatigue life prediction and fatigue behavior of circular notched carbon fiber reinforced plastic laminates are presented. Point and average stress criteria by Whitney and Nuismer are generalized to fatigue fracture criteria for notched laminates. Residual strength degradation model and the assumptions on the stress redistribution are introduced during the derivation of prediction equations. S-N curve, Basquin's relation, and H and H's FLPE1 are chosen for evaluation of residual strength of unnotched laminates and six prediction equations are derived. Experiments are performed using Graphite/Epoxy laminates whose fiber orientation is $[0$^\circ$/+45$^\circ$/-45$^\circ$/90$^\circ$]s. Presented prediction equations are reasonably close to experimental data and proposed appoach is found to be suitable to predict fatigue life of notched composite laminates.

We investigated the tribological properties of amorphous carbon (a-C) films deposited with CrC interlayers of various thicknesses as the adhesive layer. A-C and CrC thin films were deposited using the unbalanced magnetron (UBM) sputtering method with graphite and chromium as the targets. CrC films as the interlayer were fabricated under a-C films, and various structural, surface, and tribological properties of a-C films deposited with various CrC interlayer thicknesses were investigated. With various CrC interlayer thicknesses under a-C films, the tribological properties of CrC/a-C films were improved; the increased film thickness exhibited a maximum high hardness of over 27.5 GPa, high elastic modulus of over 242 GPa, critical load of 31 N, residual stress of 1.85 GPa, and a smooth surface below 0.09 nm at the condition of 30-nm CrC thickness.

Graphene, a two-dimensional graphite material consisting of sp2-hybridized carbons. The properties of graphene such as extremely high carrier mobility, high thermal conductivity, low resistivity, large specific make it a promising materail of divices and material. Typically, poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is used when graphene transfer to other substrates. To remove PMMA on graphene, people used to dip the graphene into the acetone. However, it is known that the remove of PMMA on the graphene is difficult to completely using the acetone. Therefore, to remove the PMMA on the graphene surface, many research groups have employed various methods such as the thermal treatment, photothermal method, and other solvent. Nevertheless, a part of PMMA still remain on graphene surface. Usually, to observe the residual PMMA on graphene surface, topography of graphene surface scanned by atomic force microscopy is used. However, in that case, we can not distinguish PMMA and other particles. In this study, to confirm the residual PMMA on graphene surface, we employed novel measurement technique which is available to distinguish PMMA and other particles by means of photothermal effect.
Evaluation of rolling contact fatigue damage as well as material development for roll of rolling mill is being studied until quite recently. In this paper, a focus has been imposed on evaluating the rolling contact fatigue damage. In order for this, the accumulating process of rolling contact damage using the ferritic, pearlitic and bainitic DCI has been analyzed by X-ray diffraction technique. The main finds are; 1) The graphite in DCI is considered to be a cause of interfering in the redistribution of stress. Eventually, it results in the branching of crack. 2) The evaluation of rolling contact fatigue damage can be estimated in terms of the change of residual stress and/or a half-value breadth on surface during rolling contact.

The warping of unsymmetric laminated composites is induced by residual curing stress at the room temperature. Classical lamination theory (C.L.T.) predicts the room temperature shapes of all unsymmetric laminates to be a saddle. Experimental observations, however, indicate some unsymmetric laminated composites have cylindrical room temperature shapes. This anomalous behavior is explained by the extention of C.L.T. which involves Von Karman's large deflection theory. It is shown that, depending on the thickness, width, length, curing temperature and room temperature of the laminate, critical boundaries of the shape change are determined. Theoretical predictions are compared with experimental results of Toray Graphite/Epoxy {O$_{n}$/90$_{n}$}$_{T}$./....

In this study the reactor design procedure and method of solid-solid-gas chemical heat pump system using STELF technology were investigated. For manufacturing IMPEX block which is the kernel of reactor, proper salt pair should be selected, and equilibrium temperature drop and COP should be examined for selected salt pair. Moreover, apparent density, residual porosity, and graphite ratio should be calculated to give minimum block volume and mass, and maximum energy density without causing heat and mass transfer problems. Since heat exchange area can be changed with operating condition, reactor diameter, length, and stainless steel thickness should be decided for desired specifications. These procedure and method were applied to the case study of 6kW cold production and 8 hours storage capacity reactor.

The thermal and mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced cement-based composite for solar thermal energy storage were investigated in this paper. The effect of the addition of different cement-based materials to Ordinary Portland cement on the thermal and mechanical characteristics of fiber-reinforced composite was investigated. Experiments were performed to measure mechanical properties including compressive strength before and after thermal cycling and split tensile strength, and to measure thermal properties including thermal conductivity and specific heat. Test results showed that the residual compressive strength of mixtures with OPC and slag was greatest among cement-based composite. Thermal conductivity of mixtures including graphite was greater than that of any other mixtures, indicating favor of graphite for improving thermal transfer in terms of charging and discharging in thermal energy storage system. The addition of CSA or zirconium increased specific heat of fiber-reinforced cement-based composite. Test results of this study could be actually used for the design of thermal energy storage system in concentrating solar power plants.
We have discussed on the deintercalation process of Li-EaGICs and Li-EGICs synthesized under pressure and temperature by spontaneous oxidation reaction of those compounds based on the results of X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis and electrical specific resistivity analysis. According to the results of the X-ray analysis for the intercalation process, we have found that the stage 1 for Li-EaGICs and Li-EGICs were not completly formed, but their lower stages were formed mainly. And from this results of the deintercalation process, we have found that the deintercalation process did not occur any more after 4 weeks, and the Li-EGDICs have more residual lithium metals than LiEaGDICs between the graphite interlayers. According to the thermal decomposition analysis, Li-two compounds had included very hard exothermic reaction. And we have found that these compounds did not occrurred deintercalation reaction above $400^{\circ}C$. According to the results of the electrical specific resistivity measurements, Li-EGDICs have relatively lower electrical specific resistivity than Li-EaGDICs, and Li-EaGDICs showed a formation of the ideal curve. From these results, we can suggest that Li-EaGDICs have a better properties as an anode material secondary than Li-EGICs.
The thermal and mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced mortars for thermal energy storage were investigated in this paper. The effect of the combination of different cementitious composite on the thermal and mechanical characteristics of fiber-reinforced mortars was investigated. Experiments were performed to measure mechanical properties including compressive strength before and after thermal cycling and split tensile strength, and to measure thermal properties including thermal conductivity and specific heat. The results showed that the residual compressive strength of mixtures with OPC and graphite was greatest among the mixtures. Thermal conductivity of mixtures with alumina cement was greater than that of mixtures with OPC, indicating favor of alumina cement for charging and discharging in thermal energy storage system. The addition of zirconium into alumina cement increased specific heat of mixtures. Test results of this study could be used to provide information of material properties for thermal energy storage concrete.
This paper presents two sets of full three-dimensional thermoelastic finite element analyses of superimposed thermo-mechanically loaded Spar Wingskin Joints made with laminated Graphite Fiber Reinforced Plastic composites. The study emphasizes the influence of residual thermal stresses and material anisotropy on the inter-laminar delamination behavior of the joint structure. The delamination has been pre-embedded at the most likely location, i.e., in resin layer between the top and next ply of the fiber reinforced plastic laminated wingskin and near the spar overlap end. Multi-Point Constraint finite elements have been made use of at the vicinity of the delamination fronts. This helps in simulating the growth of the embedded delamination at both ends. The inter-laminar thermoelastic peel and shear stresses responsible for causing delamination damage due to a combined thermal and a static loading have been evaluated. Strain energy release rate components corresponding to the Mode I (opening), Mode II (sliding) and Mode III (tearing) of delamination are determined using the principle of Virtual Crack Closure Technique. These are seen to be different and non-self-similar at the two fronts of the embedded delamination. Residual stresses developed due to the thermoelastic anisotropy of the laminae are found to strongly influence the delamination onset and propagation characteristics, which have been reflected by the asymmetries in the nature of energy release rate plots and their significant variation along the delamination front.
