We perform lacquer formation experiments with various combinations of marine fuel oils and lubricant oils. We also investigate the influences of base number (BN) in lubricant oil and sulfur content in fuel oil. A dissolution test with 10% dilute sulfuric acid and pull-off force test are accomplished to distinguish whether the residual layers are lacquering or not. The lacquering layers are dissolved by dilute sulfuric acid and have a strong pull-off force. Moreover, the calcium content detected in the residual layers is compared by energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS). More calcium is detected in the lacquer layers than in other residual layers. Distillate fuels containing low sulfur levels are more prone to lacquering when mixed with lubricant oil with a high BN. On the other hand, residual fuels with a high sulfur content do not form lacquer. We investigate the effect of mixture volume ratio. The mixture with higher fuel oil content is more prone to generate lacquer. These experiments indicate that a lubricant with an appropriate BN should be used to prevent lacquer forming on the surfaces such as cylinder liners depending on the sulfur content of fuel oil.

Ships are capable of operating on residual fuel oil. Recently, various attempts have been made to meet environmental regulations and with ships operating on residual fuel oil. One way of fulfilling these requirements is by using fuel additives. Dispersants and fuel combustion improvers will have a positive effect on improving the combustion characteristics of the residual fuel oil. As such, this study examines fuel oils blended with additives by using fuel combustion analysis (FIA/FCA) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results of FIA/FCA focuse only on the amount of work done by the fuel oil. Therefore, it is recommended in this study that a new method to evaluate the combustion efficiency via FIA/FCA processes be developed. The analysis with ROHR curve gained by FIA/FCA brought similar results with pressure trace curve therefore it can be said that new analysis method can be reliable. The TGA, analysis process is very sensitive to the evaporation of fuel, for example, which could be addressed. In the performance-related findings of this study, blended samples with additives containing iron compounds showed a greater improvement in early combustion characteristics than samples without additives.
Catalytic effects of metallic salts on the combustion of diesel fuel oil have been studied. In the case of organometallic salt, the active species are the metallic oxides resulted from combustion of the salts. The oxides act only on the residual solid carbon produced from the fuel oil combustion. The catalytic activity can be explained with the semiconductor theory just as in the case of the gas phase reaction. The chemical rate constant of the combustion of carbon, the soot from diesel fuel oil, is found to be $k_c=1.1{\times}10^4\;exp$ (-16,600/T) below $800^{\circ}K$. By addition of metallic oxides, the rate constant increases remarkably. This work has substantiated the belief that the effect of the metallic salts on the fuel oil combustion can conveniently be studied by checking directly the effect of the corresponding metallic oxide on the soot carbon.

In the recent International Maritime Organization's (IMOs) Maritime Safety Committee's 93rd session, the International Chamber of Shipping and International Parcel Tankers Association addressed marine fuel oil quality problems: increasing diluents in marine fuel oil, ignition in engine rooms due to the low flash point of fuel oil, and marine fuel oils that can damage marine engines. To deal with these marine fuel oil quality problems, the International Maritime Organization secretariat appointed the worlds marine fuel oil monitoring institute and constituted a correspondence group to determine the fuel oil quality required by MARPOL Annex VI regulation 14.8 (sulfur content less than 0.5%). In this study, basic research that can help with responding to marine fuel quality issues and the IMO's work is conducted. In order to perform this basic research, the off-spec ratio related to the fuel oil quality standard (ISO 8217:2012), density distribution tendency, gross specific energy, and correlation between components in the fuel oil are analyzed through actual marine fuel oil (residual marine fuel) data from the Port of Singapore.

In this study, an anode material for lithium secondary batteries was manufactured using petroleum-based residual oil, which is a petroleum refining by-product. Among petroleum-based residual oils, pyrolysis fuel oil (PFO), fluidized catalyst cracking-decant oil (FCC-DO), and vacuum residue (VR) were used as carbon precursors. The physicochemical characteristics of petroleum-based residual oil were confirmed through Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization Time-of-Flight (MALDI-TOF) and elemental analysis (EA), and the structural characteristics of anode materials manufactured from residual oil were evaluated using X-ray crystallography (XRD) and Raman spectroscopic techniques. VR was found to contain a wide range of molecular weight distributions and large amounts of impurities compared to PFO and FCC-DO, and PFO and FCC-DO exhibited almost similar physicochemical characteristics. From the XRD analysis results, carbonized PFO and FCC-DO showed similar d002 values. However, it was confirmed that FCC-DO had a more developed layered structure than PFO in Lc (Length of a and c axes in the crystal system) and La values. In addition, FCC-DO showed the best cycle characteristics in electrochemical characteristics evaluation. According to the physicochemical and electrochemical results of the petroleum-based residual oil, FCC-DO is a better carbon precursor for a lithium secondary battery than PFO and VR.

In this study, contributes to improving the state of this problem using cavitation by ultrasonic energy to reduce fuel costs, which take up a considerable part of ship operation costs, by making the use of on-board blended fuel oil more stable. An experiment simulating on-board blending methods was completed. Fuel (M.G.O & MF-180) was mixed at a volume ratio of 0.25:0.75 and, 0.75:0.25, and the effect of ultrasonic energy on blended fuel oil was examined after applying ultrasonic energy to blended fuel oil using an ultrasonic treatment unit. With the results, we confirmed the blending problem reported by vessels and residual carbon was reduced by up to 28.4%. In addition, based on the results for reduction of residual carbon content and dispersion stability, it was confirmed that the collapse pressure of the cavity due to the ultrasonic energy was effective to atomization of fuel particle and the temporary availability of mixed fuel containing a heavy fuel increased.
Due to the development of the petroleum refining technology and continuously increased demand from markets, a quantity of gasoline and diesel oil produced from a restricted quantity of crude oil has been increasing, and residual fuel to be used at marine diesel engines has been gradually becoming low quality. As a result, it was recently reported that trouble oils which cause abnormal combustion such as knocking with extreme noise and misfire from internal combustion engines were increasing throughout the world. In this study, an author investigated ignitability and combustion quality by using combustion analyzer with constant volume(FCA, Fuel Combustion Analyzer) and middle speed diesel engine about MDO(Marine Diesel Oil), HFO(Heavy Fuel Oil), LCO(Light Cycle Oil) and Blend-HFO which was blended LCO of 1000 liters with HFO of 600 liters. Moreover, for betterment of ignitability and combustion quality of injected fuels, multi-injection experiment was carried out in the diesel engine using Blend-HFO. According to the results of FCA analysis, ignitability and combustion quality was bad in the order of MDO

Safety operation of main pipelines is primarily provided by anticorrosive monitoring. Anticorrosive monitoring of oil pipeline transportation objects is based on results of complex corrosion inspections, analysis of basic data including design data, definition of a corrosion residual rate and diagnostic of general equipment's technical condition. All the abovementioned arrangements are regulated by normative documents. For diagnostics of corrosion-technical condition of oil pipeline transportation objects one presently uses different methods such as in-line inspection using devices with ultrasonic, magnetic or another detector, acoustic-emission diagnostics, electrometric survey, general external corrosion diagnostics and cameral processing of obtained data. Results of a complex of diagnostics give a possibility: $\cdot$ to arrange a pipeline's sectors according to a degree of corrosion danger; $\cdot$ to check up true condition of pipeline's metal; $\cdot$ to estimate technical condition and working ability of a system of anticorrosive protection. However such a control of corrosion technical condition of a main pipeline creates the appearance of estimation of a true degree of protection of an object if values of protective potential with resistive component are taken into consideration only. So in addition to corrosive technical diagnostics one must define a true residual corrosion rate taking into account protective action of electrochemical protection and true protection of a pipeline one must at times. Realized anticorrosive monitoring enables to take a reasonable decision about further operation of objects according to objects' residual life, variation of operation parameters, repair and dismantlement of objects.
