  • Many studies have been done on the application of residual charge measurement in cable degradation diagnosis. In this paper, the behavior of residual charges measured with water-tree degraded XLPE sheets and cable are discussed. At charge injection process, the charge is injected by applying dc voltage as a conventional method, suddenly cut-off ac voltage or impulse voltage. Therefore the residual charge is influenced by the applying process. At charge release process, transient dc current flows when applying ac high voltage and also ac high voltage superimposed to dc low voltage. From the results, new diagnosis method is suggested.

  • The effluent from conventional nightsoil treatment plants contains nutrients, color and chlorides, in addition to residual organics and suspended solids, and thereby causes substantial pollution problems in receving water resources. In order to verify the usefullness of electrolysis in removing those residual pollutants from such conventional nightsoil treatment plant effluent, a bench scale experiment was conducted using sufficiently dilluted human nightsoil as experiment feeds. The result showed mean removals of 45% of total phosphorus and 85% of color, in addition 87% of residual BOD, 47% of residual COD and 85% of residual SS. The optimum electric current was found to be 15 ampere and the optimum hydraulic residence time 21/2 hour.

  • In the classical single-image super-resolution (SISR) reconstruction method using convolutional neural networks, the extracted features are not fully utilized, and the training time is too long. Aiming at the above problems, we proposed an improved SISR method based on a residual network. Our proposed method uses a feature fusion technology based on improved residual blocks. The advantage of this method is the ability to fully and effectively utilize the features extracted from the shallow layers. In addition, we can see that the feature fusion can adaptively preserve the information from current and previous residual blocks and stabilize the training for deeper network. And we use the global residual learning to make network training easier. The experimental results show that the proposed method gets better performance than classic reconstruction methods.

  • The characteristics of tidal circulation with Hyungsan River discharges in Youngil Bay by the numerical experiments is elucidated. For the simulation of tidal residual currents related to inflow by the river discharges in Youngil Bay located in the southeastern part of Korean Peninsula, the two-dimensional numerical experiment is peformed. The tidal elevation boundary conditions of the 4 main tidal harmonic constituents (M₂, S₂, K₁ and O₁) on the open boundary and river discharges at the river boundary are considered. The computed results obtained from numerical experiment showed good agreements with the field observation ones. The residual currents generally flow toward the inner bay through the western (Dalman-Gap) and central areas of the bay, and then the currents go toward the outer bay along the eastern shore (Changgi-Gap) of the bay with anti-clockwise circulation. Especially, in the numerical experiment without Hyungsan River discharges, these flow patterns are disappeared. Based on the results, it showed that the Hyungsan River discharges play the dominant role in the patterns of tidal residual currents. This flow pattern of tidal residual currents are important mechanism of water quality, material transport in Youngil Bay.

  • For safe water supply, residual chlorine has to be maintained in tap-water above a certain level from drinking water treatment plants to the final tap-water end-point. However, according to the current literature, approximately 30-60% of residual chlorine is being lost during the whole water supply pathways. The losses of residual chlorine may have been attributed to the current tendency for water supply managers to reduce chlorine dosage in drinking water treatment plants, aqueous phase decomposition of residual chlorine in supply pipes, accelerated chlorine decomposition at a high temperature during summer, leakage or losses of residual chlorine from old water supply pipes, and disappearances of residual chlorine in water storage tanks. Because of these, it is difficult to rule out the possibility that residual chlorine concentrations become lower than a regulatory level. In addition, it is concerned that the regulatory satisfaction of residual chlorine in water storage tanks can not always be guaranteed by using the current design method in which only storage capacity and/or hydraulic retention time are simply used as design factors, without considering other physico-chemical processes involved in chlorine disappearances in water storage tank. To circumvent the limitations of the current design method, mathematical models for aqueous chlorine decomposition, sorption of chlorine into wall surface, and mass-transfer into air-phase via evaporation were selected from literature, and residual chlorine reduction behavior in water storage tanks was numerically simulated. The model simulation revealed that the major factors influencing residual chlorine disappearances in water storage tanks are the water quality (organic pollutant concentration) of tap-water entering into a storage tank, the hydraulic dispersion developed by inflow of tap-water into a water storage tank, and sorption capacity onto the wall of a water storage tank. The findings from his work provide useful information in developing novel design and technology for minimizing residual chlorine disappearances in water storage tanks.

  • Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a solid-state process, where the objects are joined together without reaching their melting point. It has been shown that this method is a suitable way to join dissimilar aluminium alloys. The current article employed hole drilling technique to measure the residual stress distribution experimentally in different zones of dissimilar aluminium alloys AA6061-T6 and AA7075-T6 Butt welded using FSW. Results are compared with those of similar AA6061-T6 plates joined using a conventional fusion welding method called tungsten inert gas (TIG). Also, the evolution of the residual stresses in the thickness direction was investigated, and it was found that the maximum residual stresses are below the yield strength of the material in the shoulder region. It was also revealed that the longitudinal residual stresses in the joint were much larger than the transverse residual stresses. Meanwhile, Vickers micro hardness measurements were performed in the cross-section of the samples. The largest hardness values were observed in the stir zone (SZ) adjacent to the advancing side whereas low hardness values were measured at the HAZ of both alloys and the SZ adjacent to the retreating side.

  • Current industrial practices and approaches are simplified and do not describe the actual behavior of plated elements of offshore topside structures for safety design due to fires. Therefore, it is better to make up for the defective methods with integrated fire safety design methods based on fire resistance characteristics such as residual strength capacity. This study numerically investigates the residual strength of steel stiffened panels exposed to hydrocarbon jet fire. A series of nonlinear finite element analyses (FEAs) were carried out with varying probabilistic selected exposures in terms of the jet fire location, side, area, and duration. These were used to assess the effects of exposed fire on the residual strength of a steel stiffened panel on a ship-shaped offshore structure. A probabilistic approach with a feasible fire location was used to determine credible fire scenarios in association with thermal structural responses. Heat transfer analysis was performed to obtain the steel temperature, and then the residual strength was obtained for the credible fire scenarios under compressive axial loading using nonlinear FEA code. The results were used to derive closed-form expressions to predict the residual strength of steel stiffened panels with various exposure to jet fire characteristics. The results could be used to assess the sustainability of structures at risk of exposure to fire accidents in offshore installations.

  • In this study, the high strength and superior toughness spring steels as the suspension material, used for automobile and railroad industries were utilized to carry out the following investigations. Corrosion times were controlled in 7, 14,30 and 60days to examine the relation between corrosion pit and compressive residual stress in the static corrosion environment after shot peened. And then corrosion current and corrosion potential were measured for every 24 hours to investigate the corrosion mechanism. Shot peened material shows the low or rate of corrosion current as compared with unpeened material. In case of hot peened material which has the highest residual stress, it has a low corrosion current density.

  • This paper describes the long duration withstand current characteristics of ZnO varistors. Two ZnO varistors were manufactured with general ceramic production methods and three abroad varistors were also prepared to be compared. During long duration withstand test, sample 1 was destroyed at 4th impulse current but the rest passed test. Before and After the test, the residual voltage variation of varistors passed was below 5%. According to the test results, it is thought that the manufacturing process such as insulating coating, sintering condition and soldering method should be improved.
