  • Steel plates are widely used in many manufacturing areas such as ship and bridge construction industries and are fabricated by different forming processes. Steel plates can have various shape defects, such as curl or camber. Roller leveling reduces the magnitude of the residual stress by using small amounts of reverse bending via an appropriate arrangement of the rolls and the associated plastic deformation in the steel plate. In this study a model for the residual stress after roller leveling is developed. In order to simplify the formulation, a plane-strain condition is assumed and the stress in the thickness direction is assumed to be negligible. The camber deformation in a real sized plate are measured and compared with the prediction values from the model to validate the accuracy of the model.

  • Antifatigue failure technology take an important the part of current industries. Currently, the shot peening is used for removing the defect from the surface of steel and improving the fatigue strength on surface. Therefore in this paper the effect of compressive residual stress by shot peening on fatigue crack growth characteristics in stress ratio(R=0.1, 0.3, 0.6)was investigated with considering fracture mechanics. There is difference between shot peening specimen and unpeening specimen. Fatigue crack growth rate of shot peening specimen was lower than that of unpeening specimen. Fatigue lift shows more improvement in the shot peening material than in the unpeening material. And compressive residual stress of surface on the shot peening processed operate resistance force of fatigue crack propagation. That is the constrained force about plasticity deformation was strengthened by resultant stress, which resulted from plasticity deformation and compressive residual stress in the process of fatigue crack propagation.

  • X-Ray Diffraction method that gives direct information about the deformation of crystal lattice is used for the determination of profiles of the residual stress along the depth of heavily boron doped silicon. The residual stress distribution is obtained by XRD method as measuring the deformation of the front surface of the $p^+$ silicon layer fabricated through different etch time. It is determined that the compressive residual stress exists in the most region except the font surface.

  • Using LSM (laser scanning method) , the radius of curvature due to thermal deformation in polyimide film coated on Si substrate is measured. Since the polyimide film shows viscoelastic behavior, i.e., the modulus and deformation of the film vary with time and temperature, we estimate the relaxation modulus and the residual stresses of the polyimide film by measuring the radius of curvature and subsequently by performing viscoelastic analysis. The residual stresses relax by an amount of 10% at 100$^{\circ}C$ and 20% at 150$^{\circ}C$ for two hours.

  • The purpose of this study is to predict the behavior of fatigue crack propagation as one of fracture mechanics on the compressive residual stress. We got the following characteristics from fatigue crack growth test carried out in the environment of room temperature and low temperature at $25^{\circ}C$, -6$0^{\circ}C$, -8$0^{\circ}C$, and -10$0^{\circ}C$ in the range of stress ratio of 0.3 by means of opening mode displacement. There is a difference between shot peened specimen and unpeened specimen. Fatigue crack growth rate of shot peened specimen was lower than that of unpeened specimen. Shot peening is improve the resistance of crack growth by fatigue that make a compressive residual stress on surface. That is the constrained force about plasticity deformation was strengthened by resultant stress, which resulted from plasticity deformation and compressive residual stress in the process of fatigue crack propagation. Temperature goes down, fatigue crack growth rate decreased.

  • This research proposes FEM analysis for Tandem welding process used in wind tower and predicts optimal welding process to improve the stability of welded structures. Three dimensional elasto-plastic analyses are employed to evaluate thermo-mechanical behavior of residual stress and deformation during Tandem welding for different distance between two touches. To confirm the thermal distribution, Goldak's ellipse heat source model and the real size wind tower pipe model are utilized. Four different analyses are being performed, where in each case the distance between two electrode torches is being changed and residual stress and welding deformation are predicted. Depending on base material state, each case is divided into: Liquid (100mm), Austenite+Liquid (200mm), Austenite+Cementite (400mm), Pearlite+Cementite (800mm).

  • It has been well appreciated that reducing weld-induced deformation as law as possible is important during fabrication for a more efficient production of blocks. The weld-induced deformation is more serious in thin plates than in thick plates because heat affect zone of thin plates is wider than that of thick plates and in addition internal and external constraints much more influence upon weld-induced deformation of thin plates. This paper deals with the application of the mechanical tensioning method to butt weld of thin plates to reduce the weld-induced deformation. In order to investigate the quantitative effect of tensioning method upon the reduction of angular deformation and shrinkage in longitudinal and transverse direction of weld line, butt welding test have been carried out for several thin plate specimens with varying plate thickness and magnitude of tensile load. From the present experimental study, it has been found that the tensioning method is very effective on reduction of weld-induced residual stress as well as weld-induced deformation.

  • ,An residual stress and out-of plane deformation produced by butt welding was analyzed by four kinds of 3D-FEM programs(Thermal El-P1 Analysis) developed by authors. The magnitude of deformation of perpendicular to the welding line generated by butt welding was large when the reduced integration method was used. This was because of removal of the locking phenomenon, which it was generally known that the stiffness of the shear component of out-of-plane was largely evaluated. And the magnitude of residual stress was analyzed by using the FEM program based on a large and small deformation theory was similar to that was analyzed by the redeced integration method.

  • When carbon-filled rubber specimens are subjected to cyclic loading, they do not return to their initial state after loading and subsequent unloading, but exhibit a residual strain or permanent deformation. We propose a specific form of the pseudo-elastic energy function to represent cyclic loading for incompressible, isotropic materials with stress softening and residual strain. The essence of the pseudo-elasticity theory is that material behaviour in the primary loading path is described by a common elastic strain energy function, and in unloading, reloading or secondary unloading paths by a different strain energy function. The switch between strain energy functions is controlled by the incorporation of a damage variable into the strain energy function. An extra term is added to describe the permanent deformation. The finite element implementation of the proposed model is presented in this paper. All parameters in the proposed model and elastic law can be easily estimated based on experimental data. The numerical analyses show that the results are in good agreement with experimental data.

  • The block assembly of ship consists of a certain type of heat processes such as cutting, bending welding residual stress relaxation and fairing. The residual deformation due to welding is inevitable at each assembly stage. The geometric inaccuracy caused by the welding deformation tends to preclude the introduction of automation and mechanization and needs the additional man-hours for the adjusting work at the following assembly stage. To overcome this problem, a distortion control method should be applied. For this purpose, it is necessary to develop an accurate prediction method which can explicitly account for the influence of various factors on the welding deformation. The validity of the prediction method must be also clarified through experiments. This paper proposes a simplified analysis method to predict the welding deformation of panel block structure. For this purpose, a simple prediction model for fillet welding deformations has been derived based on numerical and experimental results through the regression analysis. On the basis of these results, the simplified analysis method has been applied to some examples to show its validity.
