  • This study was conducted to find out characterization of spatial distribution of birds observed in river areas. Our bird survey was carried out 4 times at 31 sites from January to September in 2011. A total of 1,609 accumulated individuals belonging to 59 species, 28 families and 11 orders were observed. In the result of spatial autocorrelation analysis using the richness index of the maximum counts of each sites, we confirmed that the distribution of birds in Namdaecheon river was clustered and the tendency of spatial autocorrelation was apparent. The area of each sites within a 200m radius was classified in four biotope categories such as agricultural land, forest, residential area and water area, and the spatial autocorrelation was analysed about four types. In the result of spatial autocorrelation analysis for four biotope categories, all types were showed the positive spatial autocorrelation, but the type of water area was higher than other types. The positive correlation was found between the water area and water birds in statistical significance. However, the forest birds had non-significance values. Therefore, it is appropriate to focus on water birds except for forest birds, when researches of bird distribution in river ecosystem is conducted. The number of bird species and individuals increased as the riverside of water area was to widen. Thus, if the areas of riverside offering the feeding and roosting area increase, it will be accommodated many birds. Also, the areas of riverside should be maintained naturally because it is an important habitats of birds. Our study area is on the outskirts the city of higher rates of forest and agricultural land, it may be unreasonable to apply our results to the whole rivers. If the research about the river flowing around the city will be conducted, it is expected to be useful to the relation study area such as ecological river's restoration.

  • This study measured the Particulate Matter (PM) concentration according to altitude (30 m, 60 m, 90 m, 120 m, and 150 m) in three different environments: a construction site, natural environment (arboretum), and residential area. PM2.5 and PM10 values at 30 m above the construction site were 18.63 ㎍/㎥ and 24.23 ㎍/㎥ while values at 150 m were 10.89 ㎍/㎥ and 10.61 ㎍/㎥, respectively, indicating the average concentration decreased as altitude increased. PM2.5 and PM10 values at 30 m above the natural environment were 9.03 ㎍/㎥ and 11.21 ㎍/㎥ while those at 150 m were 3.42 ㎍/㎥ and 3.57 ㎍/㎥, respectively, showing lower average concentrations as altitude increased. PM2.5 and PM10 values at 30 m above the residential area were 10.65 ㎍/㎥ and 12.06 ㎍/㎥ while those at 150 m were 4.24 ㎍/㎥ and 5.17 ㎍/㎥, also demonstrating lower PM concentrations as altitude increased. The PM concentrations decreased as altitude increased at all tested sites and also decreased between environments in the following order: construction site, residential area, and natural environment. The results of this study are significant because PM concentrations were measured at various altitudes at different land-use sites. The results are expected to serve as basic data for decision-making in both regional and urban planning.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop the environmental management strategy of streams based on the quantified evaluation method of the stream environment. The six streams in Jinju city flowing into the Nam-river were selected for the case study. The stream environment evaluation was performed considering the following three independent field surveys. First, the stream naturalnesses considering 20 evaluation elements were investigated for each unit section of the streams having the length of 500m and the width of 100m, and then were evaluated into 5 grades. Second, water qualities of the streams were evaluated into 5 grades based on the results of eight times water quality survey. Third, the landuse patterns in the stream basins were evaluated into 5 grades according to the residential area ratio. Finally, the stream environments were classified into 5 grades by integrating the above three subfactors - stream naturalness, water quality, and residential landuse. According to the evaluation results of stream environments, the three environmental management strategies of streams were suggested. As the results of the case study, Panmun stream and Ghajwa stream were evaluated to the forth grade that need active environmental restoration, and Nabul stream and Yonga stream were evaluated to the second grade that need partial environmental restoration while Youngchun river and Dogsan stream were evaluated to the first grade showing the desirable stream environmental condition. The above environmental evaluation results for each stream will be an important reference for the further stream restoration or management plan.

  • The water quality of river has been deteriorated mainly by both point source pollution and nonpoint source pollution from the watershed. Techniques to cut point source pollutants down to the level required have been developed. But, techniques of best management practices to catch the nonpoint source pollutions and to control the routine of pollutants were not successively developed. The quality of closed water system such as reservoir, lake and farm pond is irresistable to being polluted mainly by nonpoint source pollutions. In this study, the population, land use, runoff coefficient, amount of rainfall, and runoff discharge in the watershed were surveyed to investigate the characteristics of water quality such as BOD, COD, SS, T-N, and T-P. After studying the changes of water quality in the viewpoint of land use such as paddy land, residential area, upland, forest and meadow, load factors of nonpoint source pollutant were calculated in Bangdong reservoir watershed. Residential area was more severe than other land use as far as BOD, COD and SS concerned. T-N and T-P released from the paddy and upland were higher than other land use. The 45.9% of total load of nonpoint source pollution was occured during the rainy season.

  • Catastrophe models appraise the natural risk of the built-infrastructure simulating the interaction of its exposure and vulnerability with a hazard. Because of unique configurations and reduced number, mid/high-rise buildings present singular challenges to the assessment of their damage vulnerability. This paper presents a novel approach to estimate the vulnerability of mid/high-rise buildings (MHB) which is used in the Florida Public Hurricane Loss Model, a catastrophe model developed for the state of Florida. The MHB vulnerability approach considers the wind pressure hazard exerted over the building's height as well as accompanying rain. The approach assesses separately the damages caused by wind, debris impact, and water intrusion on building models discretized into typical apartment units. Hurricane-induced water intrusion is predicted combining the estimates of impinging rain with breach and pre-existing building defect size estimates. Damage is aggregated apartment-by-apartment and story-by-story, and accounts for vertical water propagation. The approach enables the vulnerability modeling of regular and complex building geometries in the Florida exposure and elsewhere.

  • This study attempted to analyze the characteristics of interior design of the apartment units of Model-houses in terms of ecological aspects. 9 companies that possessed their model houses among the construction companies in Busan area as of August 2006 were selected. 20 units in the model houses of these companies were visited and analyzed. Through literature review, the guideline for the environmentally-friendly residential design was designed and developed to the checklists. The data collected were analyzed to find out the ecological characteristics of the interior space of apartment units. The findings are the followings. First, energy efficiency was properly considered in terms of natural lighting and natural ventilation. Second, in sustainability, the materials for floors and walls could not be reused even though they were environmentally-friendly. Water system needs more improvement for sustainable development including grey-water and rain recycling system. Third, interior greening should be applied more for better environment both physically and emotionally. It is expected that future housing will be more high-risen and densely-populated apartment spaces. Therefore, an approach to new ecological aspects including an emphasis on interior greening, use of eco-materials and adhesives, water recycling and flexibility of the spatial configuration should be made for the next generation.

  • The measuring apparatus such as heat meter is legally obliged to be installed and used for heat rating with heat or flow rate in residential buildings in Korea. There are two kinds of apparatus to measure heat consumed at each households, i.e., heat meter and hot water flowmeter. Contrast to the most of buildings with hot water flowmeter well being used for rating, heat meters have been used only 42.6% in the buildings with central heating system. But there is a critical problem in the course of using hot water flowmeter for heat rating, yielding distorted and unfair result which is different from the real value of heat supplied. Experiments with several parameters were carried out in this study to analyze this phenomenon quantively and alternative methods were proposed for rational heat rating.

  • Noise is one of the major environmental problems in human life. But hot water distributers with the flow rate control valve bring about often noise according to the heating control condition in residential buildings. The sound power level increased as the flow rate and pressure difference increased. And thus, experimental analyses for the flow rate control and the pressure difference control were carried out in this study to reduce the noise emitted from the flow rate control valve. As the results, the flow rate control method using a SMA(Shape Memory Alloy)-valve and the flow rate control system using a pressure difference sensor can be expected to control noise in the region of below 50 dB of sound power level.

  • As heat pump application has been extending to residential, commercial, and industrial fields, the heat pump should have many operation modes. It is required to optimize refrigerant charge amount at all operation modes in order to enhance the annual performance of heat pumps. In this study, the performance analysis of the heat pump which has cooling, heating, cooling-hot water, heating-hot water, and hot water modes was executed with the variation of refrigerant charge amount. As the refrigerant charge amount changed, the maximum COPs of the heat pump at different operation modes were changed within ${\pm}10%$. Therefore, it is highly recommended to select optimum charge amount for the heat pump based on the analysis of annual load for each operation modes.

  • Most of the domestic residential buildings have used the traditional radiant heating system, circulating hot water through the cross-linked polyethylene(PE-X) pipe buried in the floor panel of the heating space. New type of the heating panel was recently developed using heat pipes with double wicks. Some experiments were carried out in this study to verify the thermal characteristics of this heating system at the unit heating space which surrounded by outer space whose temperature of air be maintained scheduled value with time. Through the various experiments with several parameters, such as flow rate, inlet and outlet temperatures of hot water and the heating duration and so on, we found that the floor heating system with heat pipes was able to reduce the pumping power for hot water circulation by 4~31% compared with the conventional panel heating system using PE-X pipe. These results could be used for optimal design and efficient operation of the heating system as well as improvement of thermal comfort.
