This study initially analyzes the meaning of Community-Based Residential Environment Improvement. A residential environment improvement factor was determined through an analysis of the function, components, Planning techniques of the community, the evaluation criteria of the residential environment, and through relative literature documenting plans for the adjustment of urban and housing environments. In terms of the methodological approach, decisions were made based on the results of an expert focus-group-interview, a goodness-of-fit test, and by using the analytic network decision-making method from which the correlation among items can be considered. Results of this analysis show that the, order of importance of factors for a community-based residential environment is as follows: interactional character, cognitive character, and locational character. Furthermore, the most important aspect for each of these factors are the neighbor-hood relationship in terms of the interactional character, common consciousness for the cognitive character and place for locational character. The results of this study can be used by linking them with questionnaire items for basic resident research when a residential environment improvement project or a plan for the adjustment of urban and housing environments is planned.
This study aims at proposing a sound and sustainable development direction of an residential environment by analyzing testimonies of residents who lived in Park Hill flats or their surround at Sheffield City in the United Kingdom. The results are obtained through the analysis on a residential environment of Park Hill flats, opinions of the residents on its refurbishment, and effects of the building on the residential environment. The block of Park Hill flats was a community with a strong unity and solidarity, but that became increasingly a slum by the decline of the physical and social environment since the 1980s. In particular, it was identified that the deterioration of the social environment than that of the physical environment was a major cause of the decline. Nevertheless, it was found that "streets in the sky", the concept applied in Park Hill, played a key role in activating the community in the apartment complex. However, that street system in the complex has caused noise, poor security, and invasion of privacy. If such problems are solved, the streets in the sky will be a meaningful alternative for community activation and then ensuring sustainability in Korean residential environments that lost the function of the community.
Due to the increasing social participation of women and the decrease in the size of the typical family, childre's environments have become increasingly more important. In fact, children are one of the main groups who use the community environments. However, children as a group have not been considered in the planning of residential neighborhood environments. A child's spiritual, psychological and physical health develops upon their interaction with the surrounding environment. Residential community should therefore be planned in a child-friendly way. The aim of this study is to introduce possible criteria for developing design guidelines for Children-friendly residential environments. The principal objective is to investigate the actual conditions of children's lifestyles in residential environments and the exploration of design guidelines for children. In this study, a small group workshop panel method was used. The subjects were 4 panel groups which was consisted of households with children. Each of the panel included 2 consecutive workshops. In this study, a list of valuable criteria for design guidelines was identified. In addition, the current residential community environment was found to be inadequate to accommodate for children's lifestyles and children had different housing needs according to their ages. In conclusion, the design guidelines should be developed to provide children with developmentally appropriate community environments.

As s confirmatory study, an Analysis of Linear Structural Relationships(LISREL) was utilized to develop the model. Despite of some measurement errors, the goodness of fit of an overall model was acceptable. Facilities environment in complex and sociopsychological environment were the most important factors in residential environmental evaluation of the low income families. the findings showed that housing policies and programs to improve the quality of homes in low-income families seemed to be beneficial to improve residential satisfaction of the residents.
As the living standard of citizens are improving and the demand for the quality of life is increasing, the demand for the facilities of welfare and convenience for varied ages rises. Besides, our residential environment is faced with the need for changing into the environment of integrated function of living, which holds health, leisure, culture, education, welfare, etc. Considering the present reality requiring the augment of welfare facilities due to our aging society, community integrated facilities are needed, which can contain welfare service for home-living citizens within residential circle and can accept diverse needs of residents. The study is to figure out way of thinking what community space of 3 age cluster middle-age in the 30s~40s, preparatory senior citizen in the 50s and old age brackets in the 60s~70s. As methods for attaining the aim of this study, surveys of documents and questionnaire survey were simultaneously used. The result of the study, investigating the importance of a community among the members in the residential complex, showed that all the age groups have highly perceived its importance. All the age groups responded that leisure are important to the elderly. It indicates that importance of their social relations are within the residential environment and it proves that there is lack of facilities for leisure activities of residents in apartment house.

Community is crucial for human beings not only because they are born with communal self but also because social cooperation is more efficient than competition in many cases. Human beings are defined as Homo communicus living in residential community which is important for the fulfillment of their primary needs. Residential community is an 'intimacy zone' where personal and emotional interactions are made. This study aims at examining the health of residential community in Korea by exploring the level of place attachment and neighborhood trust. Previous studies indicate that place attachment and trust are influenced by three dimensions such as residents' characteristics, house types and regional environment. This study conducted a nationwide questionnaire survey and it shows that place attachment moulds neighborhood trust. The results of path analysis demonstrates that place attachment and trust appear high in detached house areas. Age of residents also gives positive influence on the level of place attachment and neighbourhood trust. This result gives significant policy implications for the development of residential community in Korea. Residential community as an intimacy zone has been eroded and desperately needs to be revitalized. For this, more concern should be given to the issue of desirable size of residential community and the types of houses. Detached house area must be supported by governmental policies.
