In order to understand shoreline environment characteristics of Korean reservoirs, the interrelationships between environmental factors of geomorphology, hydrology, water quality and shoreline soil were analyzed, and the reservoir types were classified according to their environmental characteristics in the 35 reservoirs selected by considering the purpose of dam operations and annual water-level fluctuations. Geomorphological and hydrological characteristics of reservoirs were correlated with the altitude and the size scale of reservoirs. The annual range of water level fluctuation showed a wide variation from 1 m to 27 m in the various reservoirs in Korea. The levels of eutrophication of most reservoirs were mesotrophic or eutrophic. From the result of the soil texture analysis, sand contents were high in reservoir shorelines. Range, frequency and duration of water-level fluctuation were distinctive from the primary function of reservoirs. Flood control reservoirs had a wide range with low frequency and waterpower generation reservoirs had a narrow range with high frequency in the water-level fluctuation. According to the result of CART (classification and regression tree) analysis, the water quality of reservoirs was classified by water depth, range of water-level fluctuation and altitude. The result of PCA (principal component analysis) showed that the type of reservoirs was classified by reservoir size, water-level fluctuation, water quality, soil texture and soil organic matter. In conclusion, reservoir size, the water-level fluctuation, water quality and soil characteristics might be major factors in the environment of reservoir shorelines in Korea.
In this study, a study related to laboratory and pilot test were performed to use an environmental soil stabilizer developed to induce a hardening reaction similar to that of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) by using industrial by-products of blast furnace slag and the combustion ash of a circulating fluidized bed boiler as the main material. For this, specimens were prepared using liquid A of sodium silicate and silica sol, and liquid B of an environmental soil stabilizer (or OPC), and laboratory tests were performed to analyze the strength and environmental characteristics. And pilot test was performed on the aging reservoir, field permeability test and electrical resistivity survey were performed in the field to analyze the applicability. As a result of the laboratory test, the homo-gel compressive strength of the chemical injection material using the environmental soil stabilizer as liquid B was about 2.88 to 3.23 times greater than that of OPC. In addition, the elution amount of most heavy metals was lower than that of OPC, and the survival rate in the fish, acute toxicity test was 100%. Therefore, when judged based on the results of the laboratory test, it was analyzed to be superior to OPC in terms of strength and environment. In the results of the pilot test in the aging reservoir, when the environmental soil stabilizer was reinforced with liquid B of the chemical injection material, the coefficient of permeability in the aging reservoir decreased to 1/50 level. In addition, as a result of the electrical resistivity survey, it was analyzed that the electrical resistivity inside the aging reservoir increased as time passed, the saturation zone disappeared, and the overall reinforcement.

This study selected Yangpyung as a target site because Yangpyung is a area of high value blessed with well preserved natural resources and beautiful natural scene and where thoughtless development and malformed use of land are in progress under the mask of hotel, accommodations and sales facility which fits the interests of land owner. As for the method used for this study, I inquired into domestic/international instances and the concept of existing environmental indicators and assessment of suitability with a view to establish assessment indicators and pose the concept through theoretical investigation of green-network and to establish green-network. 17 articles of environmental indicators such as aspect analysis, contour, greenbelt, DEM, NDVI, nature conservation area, reservoir and area for the promotion of agriculture were chosen as a actual analysing n data for setting up assessment indicators. From the result of analysis, as anticipated, green zone in Yongmusan areas within Youngmun and Seojong areas were the center of green-network in the wide area green-network in Yangpyung and the restricted area by basin system, road and legal regulation was selected as spot area and finally arable land and reservoir were selected as base which connects core with spot.
KIGAM (Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources) launched a new project to develop the low-temperature geothermal water in the area showing high geothermal anomaly, north of Pohang city, for large-scale space heating. Surface geologic and geophysical surveys including Landsat 1M image analysis, gravity, magnetic, Magnetotelluric (MT) and controlled-source audio-frequency MT (CSAMT), and self-potential (SP) methods have been conducted and the possible fracture zone was found that would serve as deeply connected geothermal water conduit. In 2004, two test wells of 1.1km and 1.5km depths have been drilled and various kinds of borehole survey including geophysical logging, pumping test, SP monitoring, core logging and sample analysis have followed. Temperature of geothermal water at the bottom of 1.5km borehole reached over $70^{\circ}C$ and the pumping test showed that the reservoir contained huge amount of geothermal water. Drilling for the production well of 2 km depth is on going. After test utilization and the feasibility study, geothermal water developed from the production well is going to be provided to nearby apartments.

The seepage quantity analysis of reservoir embankment is very important for assessment of embankment safety. However, the conventional analysis does not consider uncertainty of soil properties. Permeability is known that the coefficient of variation is larger than other soil properties and seepage quantity is highly dependent on the permeability of embankment. Therefore, probabilistic analysis should be carried out for seepage analysis. To designers, however, the probabilistic analysis is not an easy task. In this paper, the method that can be performed probabilistic analysis easily and efficiently through the numerical analysis based commercial program is proposed. Stochastic response surface method is used for approximate the limit state function and when estimating the coefficients, the moving least squares method is applied in order to reduce local error. The probabilistic analysis is performed by LHC-MCS through the response surface. This method was applied to two type (homogeneous, core zone) earth dams and permeability of embankment body and core are considered as random variables. As a result, seepage quantity was predicted effectively by response surface and probabilistic analysis could be successfully implemented.

The necessity for appropriate management of water resources infrastructures such as reservoirs, levees, and dikes is increasing due to unexpected hydro-climate irregularities and rising water demands. To meet this need, past studies have focused on advancing theoretical optimization algorithms such as nonlinear programming, dynamic programming (DP), and genetic programming. Yet, the optimally derived theoretical solutions are limited to be directly implemented in making release decisions in the real-world systems for a variety of reasons. This study first aims to comparatively analyze the two prominent optimization methods, DP and evolutionary multi-objective direct policy search (EMODPS), under historical inflow series using K-fold cross validation. A total of six optimization models are formed each with a specific formulation. Then, one of the optimization models was coupled with the actual zone-based hedging rule that has been adopted in practice. The proposed methodology was applied to Boryeong Dam located in South Korea with conflicting objectives between supply and demand. As a result, the EMODPS models demonstrated a better performance than the DP models in terms of proximity to the ideal. Moreover, the incorporation of the real-world policy with the optimal solutions improved in all indices in terms of the supply side, while widening the range of the trade-off between frequency and magnitude measured in the sides of demand. The results from this study once again highlight the necessity of closing the gap between the theoretical solutions with the real-world implementable policies.
Following the industrialization and urbanization in Korea, algal bloom causes aesthetic displeasure and many other problems such as taste and odor, coloration, scum, increase in pH, filter-bed blockage. There were some cases involving human death by microcystins during summertime in foreign countries. In Korea, Harmful cyanobacteria such as Microcystis and Anabaena develop in summer in the Daecheong reservoir, one of the main water resources, with the retention time of above 200 days. To better control algal bloom, the Ministry of Environment has been running algal bloom alert system from 1998 for the Daecheong reservoir, which needs to be improved to reflect the characteristics of river-type lakes. For this reason, we try to find new measures to improve an algal bloom alert system for each water zone considering the characteristics of harmful cyanobacteria in this study.
Patterns of epilithic algal colonization on artificial substrata (unglazed ceramic tiles) were investigated from 23rd April to 3rd July 1999 at weekly intervals over a 10 weeks period outside and inside the mesocosm in Togyo reservoir within the Civilian Passage Restriction Line near Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in Korea. The highest standing crops of epilithic algae was 1,798$\cdot$10³ cells$\cdot$$cm^{-2}$ outside the mesocosm on 26th June and also inside the mesocosm those was 2,391$\cdot$10³ cells$\cdot$$cm^{-2}$ on 26th June, 9 weeks after the experiment began. The dominants outside the mesocosm were Achnanthes minutissima, Navicula bicephala, Oscillatoria angusta, Synedra delicastissima, S. tenuissima, S. ulna v. danica and Tabellaria flocculosa, and those inside the mesocosm were Achnanthes minitissima, Coenochloris polycocca, Fragilaria crotonenesis, Peridinium cinctum, Synedra delicatissima, Tabellaria flocculosa and Ulothrix subtilissima. Diatoms were most abundant and Achnanthes minutissima was the most important species colonizing on the tiles. Chlorophyll-a content was highest value of 5.4 mg$\cdot$$m^{-2}$ on 19th June after 8 weeks growth outside the mesocosm and was 24.4 mg$\cdot$$m^{-2}$ on 26th June, 9 weeks after the experiment began on tiles inside the mesocosm. It was also shown that unglazed ceramic tiles were a more suitable substratum for colonization than the glass slides. Consequently the substratum selection plays an important role in the colonization by the epilithic algal community.

In order to understand hydrodynamic and water quality changes on the Saemangeum reservoir in accordance to inner development plan, intensive numerical simulations using EFDC have been done. Due to inner dike construction and proposed dredging plans, stratification might occur and yield flow field change. It should be noticed that very conditional gate operation schedule adjusting target water elevation of -1.5 meter causes severe stratification and hence plays an important role in poor water qualities. By using random walk particle tracking residence simulations, it is found that hydrodynamic characteristics depends greatly on riverine inflow conditions. It is also inferred that the northern part of the Mangyeong reservoir behaves as a dead zone and acts as major reasoning of water quality deterioration owing to benthic flux from long-term residing settled sediment.

Occurrence of black opaque hydrocarbon (pyrobitumen) in some Cretaceous Jinju sandstones of the Sindong Group, Gyeongsang Basin in Korea is first reported in this study. The pyrobitumen is developed on chlorite pore-lining cement, or impregnated into the outer zone of chlorite cement. Therefore, it seems to have been formed after the precipitation of chlorite cement, indicating the former presence of crude oil. The liquid hydrocarbons migrated into sandstones during moderate burial and these sandstones seem to have acted as a liquid hydrocarbon reservoir. The presence of pyrobitumen in the Jinju Formation indicates that this formation underwent deep burial after liquid hydrocarbon migration. As reservoir temperatures increased further, hydrocarbons were cracked and a solid pyrobitumen residue remained in the reservoir.
