Jangchan reservoir is located in Okcheon county, Chungbuk province, of which watershed area is $29.4\;km^2$ from outside, and $5.1\;km^2$ from inside watershed, effective storage capacity is $392{\times}10^4\;m^3$, paddy area to be irrigated is 474 ha. To determine inflows from Keumcheon weir located in outside watershed on an optimum level, a repeated procedure which is composed of simulation of inflows to Keumcheon weir, setting of range of water taking at Keumcheon weir, simulation of inflows to Jangchan reservoir, estimation of paddy water from Jangchan reservoir, and simulation of water storages in Jangchan reservoir was selected. Parameters of DAWAST model for simulating inflows to Jangchan reservoir were determined to UMAX of 315 mm, LMAX of 21 mm, FC of 130 mm, CP of 0.018, and CE of 0.007 with absolute sum of errors in reservoir water storages minimized using unconstrained Simplex method because of no inflows data. Inflows to Keumcheon weir were simulated to $2,132{\times}10^4\;m^3$ on an annual average. Optimal range of water taking at Keumcheon weir to transfer to Jangchan reservoir were $0.81{\sim}50\;mm/km^2/d$, which were summed up to $1,397{\times}10^4\;m^3$ in 66% of total on an annual average. Inflows to Jangchan reservoir were simulated to $1,739{\times}10^4\;m^3$ on an annual average of which were 80 % from Keumcheon weir of outside watershed. Requirements to paddy water from Jangchan reservoir were estimated to $543{\times}10^4\;m^3$ on an annual average.

This research presents an streamflow modeling approach in a data-scarce estuary reservoir watershed which has been suffered from high salinity irrigation water problem after completion of land reclamation project in South Korea. Since limited hydrology data was available on the Iwon estuary reservoir watershed, water balance relation of the reservoir was used to estimate runoff from upstream of the reservoir. Water balance components in the reservoir consists precipitation, inflow from upstream, discharge through sluice, and evaporation. Estimated daily inflow data, which is stream discharge from upstream, shows a good consistency with the observed water level data in the reservoir in terms of EI (0.93) and $R^2$ (0.94), and were used as observed flow data for the streamflow modeling. HSPF (Hydrological Simulation Program - Fortran) was used to simulate hydrologic response of upstream of the reservoir. The model was calibrated and validated for the periods of 2006 to 2007 and 2008 to 2009, respectively, showing that values of EI and $R^2$ were 0.89 and 0.91 for calibration period, 0.71 and 0.84 for validation period.
Wangsong Reservoir needs a systematic approach that can control water purity and water quality improvement. This study was carried out to assess the seasonal variation of water quality and the effect of pollutant being loaded from watershed in a sallow eutrophic reservoir(Wangsong Reservoir) from March to November, 2011. Wangsong Reservoir, located in Uiwang City, has the capacity of 2 million $m^{3}$ in irrigation water supply with the drainage of 4.2 $km^{2}$. Average concentrations of BOD, COD, T-N, T-P, and Chloropyll-a in Wangsong Reservoir were 5.8 mg/L, 9.7 mg/L, 4.299 mg/L, 0.106 mg/L and 73.1 mg/$m^{3}$, respectively. In the inflow streams and treated sewage of Wangsong Reservoir, the T-N concentrations of 4.114 - 14.619 mg/L were higher than those in the Reservoir and the other pollutants were lower. As a result of investigation, Wangsong Reservoir exceeded the agricultural water standard level due to algal growth and accumulation from the upper streams and sewage. In order to achieve the targeted water quality in Wangsong Reservoir, it is required to be decreased in pollutants of internal and inflow streams.
The Yellow River Basin located in the Northern part of China is well-known not only as the seriously limited water sources but the greatest sediment-carrying stream in the world. The observed annual average sediment concentration in this area is $37.6kg/\textrm{mm}^3$, and 3.1% of the water volume is occupied by sediments. Due to the reason, water development has been extremely limited and it has been appeared as one of the most difficult problems in reservoir development and management. The major obstacle to surface water uses is reservoir sedimentation so that it has been strongly requested to seek the method managing sediment by optimal fashion. To solve this problem, KOWACO (Korea Water Resources Corporation) has developed various methods on the optimal reservoir management schemes including sediment management for the Upper Fenhe Basin Reservoir System at the cooperation project with Chinese. Information Variable Dynamic Programming. which is one of them, was developed for the reservoir sediment management and a set of non-dominated solutions are generated to choose the best alternative in water supply and reservoir sediment objective problem.

The objective of the study was to determine nutrition regime and limitation in the Boryeng Reservoir where there's a water tunnel between Geum River and the reservoir. Evaluation was conducted through in situ algal bioassay experiments (in situ ABEs) using the cubitainer setting in the reservoirs. For in situ ABEs, we compared and analyzed variations in chlorophyll-a (CHL-a) and phosphorus concentrations in Boryeong Reservoir before and after the water tunnel construction. We then analyzed the nutrient effects on the reservoir. Analysis for nitrogen and phosphorus was done in the three locations of the reservoir and two locations of the ABEs. The in situ ABEs results showed that phosphorous and Nitrogen, the primary limiting nutrient regulating the algal biomass was not limited in the system. The treatments of phosphorus or simultaneous treatments of N+P showed greater algal growth than in the control of nitrate-treatments, indicating a phosphorus deficiency on the phytoplankton growth in the system. The water from the Geum River had 5 times higher total phosphorus (TP) than the water in the reservoir. Efficient management is required as pumping of the river water from Geum River may accelerate the eutrophication of the reservoir.
To develop a watershed management plan for protection of the lake water quality, the linkages among land use activities, stream water quality, and lake water quality must be understood. This study conducted to develop a Decision Support System(DSS) for the reservoir water quality managers and a comprehensive watershed management plan. This DSS has three main components; database, interactive decision model, and data delivery interface system. Graphic User Interface(GUI) was developed as the interface medium to deliver the data and modeling results to the end users. Water quality management scenarios in Yongdam reservoir consist of two parts. One is the watershed management, and the other is water quality management in the reservoir. The watershed management scenarios that were evaluated include as follows : a removal of point sources, control of waste water treatment plant, reductions in nonpoint sources, and the management of developed land. Water quality management scenarios in the reservoir include to install a curtain wall and to operate an algae removal system. The results from the scenario analysis indicate that the strategy of the reservoir water quality management can promise the best effectiveness to conserve the quality of reservoir water. It is expected that many local agencies can use this DSS to analyze the impact of landuse changes and activities on the reservoir watershed and can benefit from making watershed management decisions.
The Daecheong Reservoir is the largest multi-purpose reservoir in the Keum River basin. This water supply is subject to some of the most serious taste and odor (T&O) problems in the region. The intensity of T&O events increased due to eutrophication during the 1990s. In this study, the temporal occurrence of T&O in raw water from the main Daecheong Reservoir and its regulating reservoir was compared using both an instrumental method (CLSA+GC/MS) and threshold odor number (TON) test from April to December 2006. In addition, biofilms on the submerged macrophytes and rocks were analyzed for two typical T&O causing compounds, Geosmin and 2-MIB. The maximum concentration of Geosmin in the main reservoir was almost two times higher than that in the regulating reservoir. Interestingly, 2-MIB was only detected in water samples from the main reservoir. In the case of T&O causing compounds present in the biofilm on the submerged macrophytes and rocks, the regulating reservoir had lower concentrations compared to those of the main reservoir. It was found that both Geosmin and 2-MIB were detected from the biofilms much earlier than from the water samples. This result suggests that the occurrence of T&O compounds in the biofilms could be used as an early warning indicator of an imminent T&O outbreak in the water body.
Objectives: The Yongpung reservoir in Korea is a crucial facility that supplies water to farms in its surrounding $2km^2$ area. However, its water quality is not suited to the needs of current residents who wish for the availability of environmentally friendly agricultural products and desire to use the waterfront area. The aim of this research was to evaluate the reservoir's fish and benthic macroinvertebrate distributions and determine its water quality and the heavy metal content in its sediment. This basic data can be used to establish environmentally protective plans for the Yongpung reservoir. Methods: Six sites were selected for analysis in this investigation. Three points (YP-1, YP-2, and YP-3) were evaluated for water quality and metal content in sediments; they were located upstream, midstream, and downstream of the reservoir. Samplings of the fish and benthic macroinvertebrate populations were performed at three other sites: St. 1, St. 2, and St. 3. Results: Based on chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total nitrogen (T-N) data, the quality of the Yongpung reservoir water corresponds to Class VI (very poor) according to Korea's lake environmental standards. The lead levels measured in the sediment at the midstream and downstream points of the reservoir were 76.7 and 72.7 mg/kg, respectively, while 8 orders, 15 families, and 16 species of benthic macroinvertebrates were identified in the reservoir. The ecological score of the benthic macroinvertebrate community (ESB) was between 8 and 23, denoting poor to very poor environmental conditions. Further, 4 families and 7 species of fish were identified in the reservoir, with Cyprinidae accounting for 94.3% of all observed freshwater fish. Conclusion: Based on these findings, we conclude that management plans, including the removal of lead from the sediment, are necessary to improve the quality of the agricultural water in this reservoir. The T. japonica, which cover almost 30% of the water area, must also be removed.
Levels of arsenic in stream and reservoir waters affected by an abandoned gold mine were examined. The abandoned mine has been left without proper civil and remedial works preventing potential environmental hazards. Field and laboratory chemical analyses revealed that the stream waters downgradient from the mine area were severely contaminated with arsenic and furthermore the reservoir water, 2-3 km away from the mine, also contained substantial levels of As, far exceeding the Korean stream water standard. Relatively higher pH values (6.5-9.4) enhanced mobility of As and mainly sustained substantial As concentration in waters. Chemistries of the stream water, groundwater and reservoir water were dominated by two main factors including effects of mine effluent and anthropogenic agricultural activities. Considering that there has been a substantial As input to the reservoir and the reservoir water has been used for agricultural and domestic uses, immediate remedial works are essentially required.
Water quality in the Daecheong reservoir has been deteriorated by algal bloom due to nutrient supply from the upstream of the Daecheong reservoir after heavy rainfall. Algal bloom is propagated from eutrophicated tributary into the main body of the reservoir according to the hydrological conditions. This study is aimed to estimate the water current and temperature effect by the simulation of dam spill flow control using water quality model, CE-QUAL-W2 in 2003. Water current was resulted in nutrient transport from upstream of main reservoir and nutrients were delivered up to downstream by fast water velocity. Algal blooms occurred in stagnate zone of reservoir downstream as the current of downstream was retarded according to dam outflow control. Consequently water balance in stagnate zone triggered a rise of water temperature in summer. It affected algal bloom in the embayment of the reservoir. The simulation result by outflow control scenarios showed that spill flow augmentation induced in water body instability of stagnate zone so that water temperature declined. It could be suggested that outflow control minimize algal bloom in the downstream in the flooding season as long as water elevation level is maintained properly.
