Effect of Turbid Water on the Phytoplankton Community in Imha Reservoir (탁수가 임하호 식물플랑크톤에 미치는 영향)

  • We investigated the effect of the turbid water on the phytoplankton community in the 4 sites of Imha reservoir. The turbidity of water was proportional to the concentrations of $SiO_2$-Si. Therefore, as the turbidity of water grow, the concentration of $SiO_2$-Si increased. And the both the turbidity of water and the concentrations of $SiO_2$-Si were increased as the water run deep. The concentration of chlorophyll-a decreased as the depth of water increased. Seventy phytoplankton taxa were identified and the most abundant group was Chlorophyceae consisting of 32 taxa (46%), and Cyanophyceae and Bacillariophyceae consisted of 12 taxa (17%). And Euglenophyceae, Synulophyceae, Cryptophyceae and Dinophyceae consisted of 6 taxa (9%), 4 taxa (6%), 3 taxa (4%) and 1 taxon (1%), respectively in Imha reservoir. The concentrations of phytoplankton were increased according to the turbidity of water because of the high amount of organic nutrition which is presented with turbid water. And especially, the concentrations of nitrogen increased easily because of the weak binding to the soil particle. In conclusion, total nitrogen and $SiO_2$-Si flowed into the Imha reservoir with soil particle, and these inorganic nutritions affect the growth of algae.

Effects of Autotransfusion using Cell Saver in Cardiac Surgery (개심술시 Cell Saver 를 이용한 자가수혈의 효과)

  • During a eight month period[from December, 1988 to July, 1989], a series of 35 adults undergoing redo-valve replacement or coronary artery bypass grafting was selected to an autotransfusion group[n=10] or a control group[n=25]. The Cell Saver System[Haemonetics Corp., Graintree, Mass] was employed for autotransfusion. With this system, all blood shed in the operative field before and after cardiopulmonary bypass and remained in cardiotomy reservoir after cardiopulmonary bypass was aspirated by means of a locally heparinized collecting system. After the salvaged blood was centrifuged, the resulting red cell concentrate subsequently reinfused. The patients receiving autologous blood required significantly less banked homologous blood than their controls[3213k1020 ml and 506051931 ml, respectively: p=0.001] There were no clinical infections in the autotransfusion group, although 40% of the cultures of processed blood were positive. And there was no apparent intergroup difference of the clinical and the hematologic and hemostatic laboratory findings. We conclude that autotransfusion using cell saver is effective for saving the homologous blood transfusion in cardiac surgery.

Seasonal Variation of Eubacterial Community Structure and Their Structure Affecting Environmental Parameters in Reservoir (남매지에서 Eubacteria 군집구조의 계절적 변화와 그에 영향을 미치는 환경요인)

  • For elucidating the correlation between the eubacterial community structure and environmental parameters in Nammae Reservoir located in Kyungsan, Kyungbuk, the bacterial community structure and their structure affecting environmental parameters were analyzed using Fluorescent In Situ Hybridization (FISH) monthly over year. $\alpha$ . $\beta$ . $\gamma$-subclasses of Proteobacteria and Cytophaga-Flavobacterium (CF) group known as dominant bacterial group in freshwater were detected in 3 stations over year. The ratio of each subclass to total bacteria was determined; $\alpha$.$\beta$ . $\gamma$-subclasses and CF group varied in the range of 4.0~29.2%, 1.7~25.8%, 1.8~12.8%, 4.9~36.3%, respectively and there was no substantial differences between stations. In terms of the correlation between each group specific bacteria and environmental parameters such as temperature, SS, pH, DOC, NH$_4$-N, NO$_3$-N, PO$_4$-P, standing crops of algae, the results were as follows: 1) total bacterial numbers correlated positively with temperature, SS and DOC, 2) Eubacteria positively with DOC and Chl-$\alpha$, 3)${\gamma}$-subclass positively with DOC, and 4) CF group positively with standing crops of chlorophyceae, 5) whereas $\beta$-subclass bacteria correlated negatively with standing crop of cyanobacteria and that of total algae.

  • To extract hydrologic information more easily , the pre-processor for hydrologic model using Geographic Information System was developed . This model was applied to the Balan-reservoir watershed which is located at the southwest of Suwon. For estimation SCS curve number, landuse map and hydrologic soil group map were collected from digital map and reconnaissance soil map respectively. The estimated curve number from the GIS technique was 73.

  • Occurrence of black opaque hydrocarbon (pyrobitumen) in some Cretaceous Jinju sandstones of the Sindong Group, Gyeongsang Basin in Korea is first reported in this study. The pyrobitumen is developed on chlorite pore-lining cement, or impregnated into the outer zone of chlorite cement. Therefore, it seems to have been formed after the precipitation of chlorite cement, indicating the former presence of crude oil. The liquid hydrocarbons migrated into sandstones during moderate burial and these sandstones seem to have acted as a liquid hydrocarbon reservoir. The presence of pyrobitumen in the Jinju Formation indicates that this formation underwent deep burial after liquid hydrocarbon migration. As reservoir temperatures increased further, hydrocarbons were cracked and a solid pyrobitumen residue remained in the reservoir.

Geochemistry of Geothermal Waters in Korea: Environmental Isotope and Hydrochemical Characteristics I. Bugok Area (한반도 지열수의 지화학적 연구: 환경동위원소 및 수문화학적 특성 I. 부곡 지역)

  • Hydrogeochemical and environmental isotope studies were undertaken for various kinds of water samples collected in 1995-1996 from the Bugok geothermal area. Physicochemical data indicate the occurrence of three distinct groups of natural water: Group I ($Na-S0_4$ type water with high temperatures up to $77^{\circ}C$, occurring from the central part of the geothermal area), Group II (warm $Na-HCO_{3}-SO_{4}$ type water, occurring from peripheral sites), Group III ($Ca-HCO_3$ type water, occurring as surface waters and/or shallow cold groundwaters). The Group I waters are further divided into two SUbtypes: Subgroup Ia and Subgroup lb. The general order of increasing degrees of hydrogeochemical evolution (due to the degrees of water-rock interaction) is: Group III$\rightarrow$Group II$\rightarrow$Group I. The Group II and III waters show smaller degrees of interaction with rocks (largely calcite and Na-plagioclase), whereas the Group I waters record the stronger interaction with plagioclase, K-feldspar, mica, chlorite and pyrite. The concentration and sulfur isotope composition of dissolved sulfate appear as a key parameter to understand the origin and evolution of geothermal waters. The sulfate was derived not only from oxidation of sedimentary pyrites in surrounding rocks (especially for the Subgroup Ib waters) but also from magmatic hydrothermal pyrites occurring in restricted fracture channels which extend down to a deep geothermal reservoir (typically for the Subgroup Ia waters). It is shown that the applicability of alkaliion geothermometer calculations for these waters is hampered by several processes (especially the mixing with Mg-rich near-surface waters) that modify the chemical composition. However, the multi-component mineral/water equilibria calculation and available fluid inclusion data indicate that geothermal waters of the Bugok area reach temperatures around $125^{\circ}C$ at deep geothermal reservoir (possibly a cooling pluton). Environmental isotope data (oxygen-18, deuterium and tritium) indicate the origin of all groups of waters from diverse meteoric waters. The Subgroup Ia waters are typically lower in O-H isotope values and tritium content, indicating their derivation from distinct meteoric waters. Combined with tritium isotope data, the Subgroup Ia waters likely represent the older (at least 45 years old) meteoric waters circuated down to the deep geothermal reservoir and record the lesser degrees of mixing with near-surface waters. We propose a model for the genesis and evolution of sulfate-rich geothermal waters.

Detection of Puumala and Hantaan Viruses among Bats in Korea by Nested RT-PCR

  • Hantavirus is a genus of the Bunyaviridae family consisting following serotype groups: Hantaan, Seoul, Puumala, Prospect Hill, Thailand, Belgrade, Thotta palayam, Sin Nombre. Most of Hantavirus group have been associated with many clinically similar disease known collectively as hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). Hantaan virus is the prototype of the genus hantavirus, originally isolated from Apodemus agrarius. Bat was found as a natural host for Hantaan virus in Lee's lab for the first time. Then, Hantaan-like virus was isolated Hantaan-like virus from bat. To identify hantaviruses that are present in Korea among bats, bats were collected from Jeong-Sun, Won-Joo, Chung-Ju and Hwa-Cheon area, RNA was isolated from lung and serum. RT-PCR was performed with a universal primer from M segment. Nested RT-PCR was carried out to differentiate Hantaan, Seoul and Puumala virus using serotype specific primers. As we expected, Hantaan viruses were detected in bats and Seoul virus was not detected. Interestingly, Puumala viruses were also detected in bats from Won-Ju, but not in other areas. Puumala virus is originally isolated from Clethrinomys glareolus, and cause light HFRS. Recently, Paradoxomis webbiana, a wild bird turn out to be a reservoir for Puumala virus in Korea. These data indicate that bat is a new natural reservoir of Puumala virus.

Dynamic response of concrete gravity dams using different water modelling approaches: westergaard, lagrange and euler

  • The dams are huge structures storing a large amount of water and failures of them cause especially irreparable loss of lives during the earthquakes. They are named as a group of structures subjected to fluid-structure interaction. So, the response of the fluid and its hydrodynamic pressures on the dam should be reflected more accurately in the structural analyses to determine the real behavior as soon as possible. Different mathematical and analytical modelling approaches can be used to calculate the water hydrodynamic pressure effect on the dam body. In this paper, it is aimed to determine the dynamic response of concrete gravity dams using different water modelling approaches such as Westergaard, Lagrange and Euler. For this purpose, Sariyar concrete gravity dam located on the Sakarya River, which is 120km to the northeast of Ankara, is selected as a case study. Firstly, the main principals and basic formulation of all approaches are given. After, the finite element models of the dam are constituted considering dam-reservoir-foundation interaction using ANSYS software. To determine the structural response of the dam, the linear transient analyses are performed using 1992 Erzincan earthquake ground motion record. In the analyses, element matrices are computed using the Gauss numerical integration technique. The Newmark method is used in the solution of the equation of motions. Rayleigh damping is considered. At the end of the analyses, dynamic characteristics, maximum displacements, maximum-minimum principal stresses and maximum-minimum principal strains are attained and compared with each other for Westergaard, Lagrange and Euler approaches.

Establishment of Condition Assessment Criteria in Agricultural Reservoirs by AHP (AHP 기법에 의한 농업용 저수지의 상태평가 기준 설정)

  • In this study, in order to establish the criteria for evaluation of importance by the type of facility specialized for agricultural reservoirs, an expert group consisting of a total of 167 members who were in management, or specialized in the fields of design, research, and diagnosis were organized, and the importance for facilities was set with application of the AHP technique. The importance of dam body, spillway, and intake structure composing a reservoir were set at 59%, 24%, and 17%, and the importance of dam crest, upstream slope, and downstream slope constituting a dam body was set at 32%, 31%, and 37%, respectively. In addition, the importance of approach channel, regulated channel, chute channel, and stilling basin consisting a spillway was set at 15%, 44%, 26%, and 15%, and the importance of inclined conduit and outlet conduit consisting an intake structure was set at 35% and 65%, respectively. The safety grade of the reservoirs evaluated by applying the newly presented importance values in this study showed the rearrangement of the grades with a change of 11% compared to the previous grades. In this way, the newly established criteria are expected to be utilized as basic data with strategic importance in reservoir safety management and disaster prevention as well as the operation of systems in the future.

Prediction of water quality on some reservoirs with a simple model (단순(單純)모델을 이용(利用)한 저수지(貯水池) 수질예측(水質豫測))

  • To understand the fundamental features of reservoir environment and its future aspects, a simple predictive model for water quality was attempted with the aid of data easily obtained, Based on the data from 12 reservoirs in Korea, application of the simple predictive model was successfully made by means of statistical methods and simple physical submodels. Significant information on th effects of retention time on primary production in a reservoir, longitudinal change in water quality affected by certain non-dimensional parameters were also obtained. The chlorophyll-a concentration can be predicted by the equation as ; chlorophyll-a=($395{\time}limiting$ nutrient concentration) - 1.090.
