Identification of Intellectual Structure of Science and Technology in North Korea using by Author Co-citation Analysis (저자 동시인용 분석을 이용한 북한 과학기술의 지적 구조 규명에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze academic papers published by North Korean scientists, to uncover major areas of research in North Korean science and technology, and to uncover the intellectual structures that underlie these science and technology. Through quantitative analysis, it is to find out who the main research actors are, what research areas are being dealt with, which research areas last a long time, which areas have been discontinued, and which research areas are receiving new attention. In order to detect major research areas and intellectual bases in North Korean science and technology, North Korean scientists' articles were collected from WoS (SCIE). CiteSpace, a scientific quantitative analysis tool, was used to identify major research areas based on author simultaneous citation analysis. The main research areas in North Korea are found to be material properties, vibration analysis, incline matrice, sodium cointercalation, and external magnetic field.

  • The purpose of this research is to conduct an empirical analysis regarding Korea's 'Marine Protected Areas (MPA)' from an international comparative perspective. The authors would like to present the policy direction of marine protected areas based on the result of the research. The result of this study can be summarized in the following manner: First, the total designated size of marine protected areas in Korea is very small compared to the sizes of other OECD nations . Second, while some nations have expanded the extent of marine protected areas in accordance with international agreements and criteria, Korea has not done so. Accordingly, we propose the designated dimensions of marine protected areas should be constantly expanded to keep pace with international trends.

  • As the second most populous province in Cambodia, Battambang also exhibits an increasing number of urban poor areas. This research focuses on the economic situation of slum areas in Battambang and how people in slum areas are affected by climate change. This research report describes socioeconomics of people living in slum areas in 4 villages in Battambang City. An investigation will be made on motivation of moving to slum areas, access to water, access to sanitation, access to electricity, transport and delivery, access to health care, access to education, security of tenure, cost of living in slum, literacy, and access to finance. We also explore the policy of the public sector toward climate change in Cambodia.

A Satellite Imagery-Based Survey of Reclaimed Land in South Pyongan Province, North Korea (위성영상을 활용한 북한 평안남도 간척지 실태조사)

  • This study surveyed the actual status of reclamation areas in South Pyongan Province, North Korea, using satellite images and literature to survey the creation date, area, and length of the embankment of the reclamation areas. The reclamation areas in South Pyongan Province were created in three stages, with the first stage completed in the late 1970s or early 1980s, the second stage in the late 1980s or early 1990s, and the third stage in the 2000s. The total area of the reclamation areas is 105,570 hectares. The land cover of the reclamation areas is as follows: agriculture (50.5%), saltern (29.5%), water bodies (13.6%), foreshore (12.4%), grasslands (3.0%), bare land (0.4%), facility (0.1%), and forests (0.1%). The study also found that the NDVI values of the reclamation areas vary depending on the location. The NDVI values of the Gwiseong and Namyang reclamation areas are low, while the NDVI values of the Samcheonpo and Jigdongbaedali reclamation areas are high. The study found that the NDVI values of the reclamation areas are correlated with the land cover of the reclamation areas. The study's findings can be used to understand the development direction and regional characteristics of the reclamation areas in South Pyongan Province. The study's findings can also be used to develop policies and plans for the sustainable development and utilization of the reclamation areas in South Pyongan Province.

Employing Informetric Analysis to Identify Dominant Research Areas in the Top Ranking U.S. LIS Schools (계량정보학적 분석을 통한특정 대학원의 핵심 연구분야 파악: 미국 상위 10개 문헌정보학 대학원을 대상으로)

  • Authoritative as well as objective information on ranking or dominant research areas of academic departments/schools in a certain discipline is essential for the graduate school applicants. In this study, we performed an informetric analysis to identify dominant research areas in the top 10 U.S. LIS schools. We used two different datasets of research productivity and research interests of the LIS faculty. The correspondence analysis method was employed to graphically display the association between research areas and the LIS schools. We found that the research Productivity data collected from SSCI database generated a very informative map presenting which research areas were dominant in which LIS schools. We also found that for the two most productive suhject areas in LIS over the past 10-year period, the proportion of research articles in information retrieval decreased to a great extent in the recent 5-rear period, whereas that of information seeking behavior showed an almost same degree of increase.

An Investigative Treatise on the Success Story of Women Entrepreneurs in Tribal Areas of India

  • Purpose: The purpose of this research is to explore the continuum of reasons and skills employed by tribal Indian women entrepreneurs to establish their successful businesses in terrorist affected areas. Research design, data and methodology: After an extensive literature review on women's entrepreneurship and their situations in disturbed areas, a qualitative research method was applied, and researchers conducted well-structured personal interviews to collect data from fifty respondents selected by using random and convenience sampling. Results: This study has identified the range of reasons for the successes of tribal women entrepreneurs. These are strict compliance with tribal culture and restrictions imposed by different stakeholders and the establishment of social networks and support from local communities and with their indefatigable and indomitable perseverance to proffer basic sustenance for their families. Conclusions: A minimum sample was selected from the Andhra-Odisha Border (AOB) areas due to security concerns. The research depicts the tribal Indian women entrepreneurs' grit and remorseless nature in overcoming impediments from the socio-cultural, economic, political, and legal framework of the country. This research is a gallant effort taken up by the authors, which is the first of its kind to visit as well as to conduct primary research in disturbed areas like the Andhra-Odisha Border in India.

The JASIST Editorial Board Members' Research Areas and Keywords of JASIST Research Articles (JASIST 편집위원회의 연구분야와 JASIST 논문의 키워드에 관한 연구)

  • This paper examines the characteristics of the JASIST (Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology) editorial board members and their research areas through author co-citation analysis, and investigates whether the editorial board members' research areas are related with keywords frequently appeared in the journal's research articles. In the process, research areas of the central members and those appeared most frequently as keywords will be identified. Research areas of the 36 members on the JASIST editorial board are collected and categorized to compare with the categorization of keywords extracted from 169 research articles published in JASIST, 2013. The result shows that members with higher centrality in the co-citation network are related with research areas that are also dominant in the distribution of article keywords. The areas include information behavior and searching, information retrieval, information system design, and bibliometrics.

  • Vulnerable areas by non-point source pollution and prioritizing control areas were researched using hydrological and geomorphological data, non-point source loads, and water quality data. Using overlay analysis, vulnerable areas were graded with various scenarios. Vulnerable areas were selected near the metro city with impermeable landuse because non-point source loads and water quality data had influence on overlay analysis to rank vulnerable area. Analysis scenarios and weighted values can be changed under regional characteristics and given conditions.

Analysis of Properties of Fashion Trading Areas Using Network Analysis Technique (네트워크 분석 기법을 통한 패션 상권의 특성 분석)

  • This research analyzed characteristic changes in trading areas and the success factors of popular fashion trading areas (Garosu-gil, Dongdaemun, and Itaewon). This research adopts a social network analysis method to semantically analyze trading areas. Articles on the three fashion trading areas were located through KrKwic software to extract keywords and calculate word frequency. Keywords with high frequency were placed through NodeXL software to identify relationships among keywords. Researchers created a network of relationships among trading areas and between past and present of trading areas to analyze and visualize. In the past (2008-2009), the trading areas of Dongdaemun, Garosu-gil and Itaewon were placed horizontally with a limited number of shared keywords between them. However, the three trading areas retain diverse rage of keywords and an organic realtionships five years later (2013-2014). Compared to the past, all three areas see the emergence of relevant fashion keywords such as 'designer', 'design', 'brand'. Additional cultural keywords such as 'culture/art/performance', 'exhibition', and 'event' have commonly appeared and imply that related industries are an important factor as well. Fashion companies that consider evaluating areas for a new store opening need to understand the trading area characteristics and select the most suitable area. In addition, it is necessary to equip the trading area with basic fashion elements as well as relavant industry when the government tries to develop fashion trading areas.

The Generation of True Orthophotos from High Resolution Satellites Images

  • The purpose of this investigation is to generate true orthophotos from high resolution satellite images. The major works of this research include 4 parts: (1) determination of orientation parameters, (2) generating traditional orthophotos using terrain model, (3) relief correction for buildings, and (4) process for hidden areas. To determine the position of satellites, we correct the onboard orientation parameters to fine tune the orbit. In the generation of traditional orthophotos, we employ orientation parameters and digital terrain model(DTM) to rectify tilt displacements and relief displacements for terrain. We, then, compute relief displacements for buildings with digital building model (DBM). To avoid double mapping, we detect hidden areas. Due to the satellite’s small field of view, an efficient method for the detection of hidden areas and building rectification will be proposed in this paper. Test areas cover the city of Kaohsiung in southern Taiwan. Test images are from the QuickBird satellite.
