Analysis of Growth Characteristics and Yield Pattern of 'Cupra' and 'Fiesta' Paprika for Yield Prediction (수량예측을 위한 'Cupra', 'Fiesta' 파프리카의 생육특성 및 수확량 패턴 분석)

  • This study was aimed at predicting the yield of paprika (Capsicum annuum L.) through analyzing the growth characteristics, yield pattern and greenhouse environment. In the greenhouse of the Gyeongnam area (667 m above sea level), the red paprika 'Cupra' and the yellow paprika 'Fiesta' were grown from July 5, 2016 to July 15, 2017. The planting density was $3.66plants/m^2$ and attracted 2 stems. During the cultivation period, the average external radiation of the glasshouse was $14.36MJ/m^2/day$ and the internal average temperature was controlled as $20.1^{\circ}C$. After 42 weeks of planting, the growth rate of 'Cupra' was 7.3 cm/week and that of 'Fiesta' was 6.9 cm/week. The first fruit setting of 'Cupra' appeared at 1.0th node and 'Fiesta' at 2.7th node. The first harvest of 'Fiesta' was 11 weeks after planting and 'Fiesta' was 14 weeks. Comparing the yield per 10 a until the end of the cultivation in July, 'Fiesta' was 19,307 kg, which was 2.4% higher than that of 'Cupra'. And the fruit weight ratio of over 200 g of 'Cupra' was 27.7% which was 7.7% higher than that of 'Fiesta'. The average required days to harvest after fruit setting of 'Cupra' was 72.6 days and 'Fiesta' was 63.8 days. According to the relationship between the average required days to harvest and the cumulative radiation (during from fruit setting to harvest), the more radiation increases the less required days to harvest increases after February. In terms of yield, 'Cupra' increased in yield as the cumulative radiation increased, while 'Fiesta' showed an irregular pattern. Cumulative radiation from fruit setting to harvest was negatively correlated with required days to harvest after February in both cultivars. But in relation to yield, there were difference between 'Cupra' and 'Fiesta'.

Effect of the Cold Treatment Period on a Plant's Dormancy Breaking in the Winter Production of Gomchwi's New Varieties (Ligularia fischeri (Ledeb.) Turcz)

  • This study was conducted to determine the number of days required to break a plant's dormancy and promote subsequent crop growth in new varieties of Gomchwi through the 4℃ treatment. Three new varieties of Gomchwi namely, 'Sammany', 'Gommany', and 'Damogy' were observed in this study. The rate of leaf emergence of 'Sammany' after 15-day of 4℃ treatment was 100%, while 'Gommany', and 'Damogy' took 20-days and 10-days, respectively to reach to 97.9% rate of leaf emergence. After 10-days of 4℃ treatment, 'Damogy' grew faster than the other varieties. and Harvest time for 'Damogy' was on January 18th, after 5-days of 4℃ treatment and yield was observed to be the highest at 15-days of 4℃ treatment. 'Sammany' was next with a minimum of 10-days of 4℃ treatment, although 15-days is more preferred for better harvest. 'Gommany' on the other hand, did not grow enough for harvest by January 18th, and its harvest time was delayed to January 31st. It needed a minimum of 15-days and preferentially 20-days of 4℃ treatment to grow normally and be ready for harvest. The plant height, leaf length and leaf petiole length appeared to grow better by extending duration of the 4℃ treatment. The number of leaves of 'Sammany' and 'Gommany' varieties was three leaves for the 5-days treatment which may be due to the incomplete breaking of dormancy. Regarding the yield per plant, 'Sammany' yielded 112.3 grams (g) in 15-days treatment, and 'Gommany' yielded 106.5 g in 25-days treatment. In the case of 'Damogy', it yielded 123.5 g and 183 g in the 10-days and 25-days treatment respectively. It is concluded that 'Damogy', 'Sammany' and 'Gommany requires 10, 15, and 20 days of 4℃ treatment to break the plant's dormancy and promote better plant growth.

Effect of the Harvest Season on the Yield and Growth of Unripe Fruit and Biennial Flowering of 'Miyagawa' Satsuma Mandarin in Open Field Cultivation (노지재배 풋귤 수확시기가 수량과 과실생육 및 다음해 착화에 미치는 영향)

  • BACKGROUND: As consumption of unripe mandarin increases, its cultivation has increased in open field cultivation areas. Because unripe mandarin must be harvested before ripening and color change, the optimum harvest time must be determined. This study investigated the effect of the harvest season on the yield of unripe fruit and biennial flowering of 'Miyagawa' satsuma mandarin. METHODS AND RESULTS: Two areas of unripe mandarin orchard were selected, and the yield, fruit growth, working time, and flowering of trees the following year were investigated. Fruit was harvested at 40, 60, 80, 100, and 120 days after full bloom and at general ripening. Fruit yield of unripe mandarin increased with later harvest time from 100th to 120th day except normal ripening. The next year, biennial occurred with normal ripening and harvesting, but not at the 120th day after full bloom. At the 40th day (earliest harvest time), summer and autumn shoots were present, but not after the 100th day. The 40th day required the most harvesting time; because the time gradually decreased with later harvest, the harvest time was shortest on the 120th day, and general ripening occurred shortly after the 120th day. CONCLUSION: Harvesting of unripe mandarin 100-120 days after full bloom was ideal to reduce harvesting time, enhance yield, and enable flowering the following year.

Effects of Combine Harvesting and Drying Methods on Grain Quality in Rice Cultivars (벼 품종의 콤바인 수확과 건조방법에 따른 미입질의 변화)

  • Currently, mechanization and automation have been introduced into rice harvest and drying process due to the shortage of man power. After rice cultivars, Chucheong and Milyang #23 were cutted with manual method (H1) or harvested with combine (H2), the threshed grain were dried in natural sun-drying (D1), in natural air in-bin system (D2), or in contineous hot-air drier (D3). We have evaluated grain losses, operation hour, and grain quality on each harvest and drying methods. Shattering loss during harvesting with combine was not dirfered significant from that of manual method, but threshing loss was 1.2% higher in combine harvest than in manual. Operation hours required for combine harvest was 3.5 times faster than for manual, even without head threshing. There was a significant difference bel ween cultivars in harvesting loss, which Milyang #23, a Tongil rice had two times more grain loss than Chucheong, a Japonica rice. Drying hours required to reduce to 14% grain moisture content were ten days for H1D1, 5-9 days for H2 D1, 2-3 days for H2D2, and only 15 hours for H2D3, respectively. In grain quality, complete grain ratio after dehulling was decreased about four percent in H2D3 compared to H1D1. while it was lower in Milyang #23 than in Chucheong, Hot-air drier increased occurence of cracked and broken grain. Combine harvest increased significantly these incomplete grain ratio of :Milyang #23, but not Chucheong.

The Degradation Patterns of Benzimidazole Pesticides in Korean Lettuce by Cultivation (시설재배 상추에서 Benzimidazole계 농약의 분해특성)

  • Three benzimidazole pesticides commonly used in korean lettuce were subjected to a field residue trial to ensure safety of terminal residue in the harvest. The residual patterns of three benzimidazole pesticides, which were carbendazim, benomyl and thiophanate-methyl were examined after applying with the recommended dose in two types of korean lettuce (Chima and Chuckmeon) and their DT50 were calculated. In Chima lettuce, biological half-lives of carbendazim, benomyl and thiophanate-methyl were 2.56, 1.37 and 2.54 days, respectively and their required time under MRL(5.0 mg/kg as carbendazim) were 4.5, 2.2 and 1.0days. In Chuckmeon lettuce, biological half-lives of them were 3.41, 1.70 and 4.20 days, respectively and their required time under MRL were 5.4, 1.9 and 0.5days.

Photoperiod manipulation in controlling growth and flowering of Chrysanthemum (일장조절이 국화의 생장과 개화에 미치는 효과)

  • In Chrysanthemum ${\times}$ morifolium, 30 days of continuous short days (SD) are required for flowering. The effects of alternating short day (SD) - long day (LD) - SD treatments was tested in 5 daisy-like single cultivars, 'Limelight', 'Sunlight', 'Candle Light', 'Firebrand', and 'Twilight', Thee other decorative type cultivars, 'Spirit', 'SunburstSpriit', 'Mandalay', and 'Illini Harvest' was also included. Short day treatment was given for 30 days (control: 30SD) and 5 or 10 LD were interposed following 5 or 10 SD. Different responses were noticed when data from all cultivars were combined, showing that flowering was delayed and the number of ray florets were increased by 5 SD-10 LD-25 SD. The number of ray florets, 40 florets in 'Firebrand' and 60.8 florets in 'Candlelight' was increased significantly by 5 SD-10 LD-25 SD as compared to the control. There were no adverse effects by SD-LD-SD treatment, except for the delay in flowering time from 6 to 7 days. The number of ray florets in 'Illini Harvest' and 'Limelight' were, however, not increased by any SD-LD-SD treatments. Cultivar dependent responses should further be investigated in other newly available cultivars, and this information could be used to breed new cultivars.

New curing method using gaseous oxidant on sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas)

  • In Asia, sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) is a very important crop for starch production. Approximately 74.3% of the total sweet potato production quantity is produced in Asia (FAO, 2014) and China is the largest producer of sweet potato. Post-harvest management is particularly important because it is difficult to maintain the quality as well as quantity of sweet potatoes. Despite the importance of post-harvest management, researches on sweet potato have been focused on production-related study such as breeding of new variety, improved techniques of cultivation, so there is limited research on storage after harvest. Curing is a normal practice after sweet potato harvest to promote wound healing and extend postharvest storage life. In Korea, harvested sweet potatoes are usually cured for 4 to 7 days at $30-33^{\circ}C$ and 80-95% relative humidity within one week. Since the optimum storage temperature of sweet potato is regarded as $15-20^{\circ}C$, additional facilities and costs are required to raise the temperature for curing. However, the majority of small farmers do not have the capacity to provide additional facilities and costs. This study was initiated to suggest a new curing method to accelerate the wound healing by applying chemical oxidation to the wound surface of sweet potato. Oxidative stress is known to play an important role in the synthesis of secondary metabolites including lignin. In addition, chemical oxidation can be applied to prevent spoilage caused by microorganisms. Powerful gaseous oxidant with excellent penetration ability and superior sterilization effect was selected for this study. Lignification, weight loss, and spoilage rate of artificially wounded sweet potatoes were investigated after oxidant fumigation. There were clear differences in morphological analysis such as lignification pattern, lignin deposition color, and continuity of lignified cell layers between oxidant-fumigated sweet potatoes and control. These results show that gaseous oxidant can be used to supplement or replace the curing practice, to improve shelf-life as well as curing cost reduction.

Germination of Hemerocallis Seeds as Influenced by Seed Development and Temperature Treatments

  • Germination of Hemerocallis seeds as influenced by cold stratification at $5^{\circ}C$ (CS) and maturity of seeds evaluated using X-ray imaging has not been well investigated. Seeds of H. lilioasphodelus, H. citrina, H. citrina 'April Flower', and H. minor collected from China and H. thunbergii collected from Korea were germinated at $20^{\circ}C$ without pre-temperature treatment, while H. hongdoensis, H. dumortieri, H. minor, and H. vespertina seeds were treated with CS. Harvesting 'Stella de Oro' capsules at 35-40 days after anthesis yielded mature seeds with well-developed embryo and cotyledons analyzed by X-ray images with a 92% germination in 17 days after sowing. Seeds of H. thunbergii and H. citrina germinated in less than 13 days without CS; two weeks of CS did not accelerate seed germination. Seeds of H. hongdoensis germinated in 24 days when seeds were stored at $25^{\circ}C$ without CS and in less than 27 days when cold stratified. Therefore, 'Stella de Oro' capsules should be harvested at 35-40 days after anthesis to harvest mature seeds. Cold stratification is not required to accelerate seed germination in the Hemerocallis taxa evaluated in this study.

Characteristics of a new Pleurotus eryngii cultivar, Aeryni 6 (큰느타리버섯 신품종 '애린이6'의 생육특성)

  • In order to breed a new Pleurotus eryngii cultivar exhibiting intermediate size and rapid growth, single crosses between $24{\times}46$ and KNR2539 were performed. The resulting new cultivar, $17{\times}15$, was chosen based on the required days to harvest (15.4 days), quality (7.5), and yield (81.5 g/850 cc bottle) obtained in a preliminary test. The strain was named Aeryni 6 and cultivated at mushroom farms on a large scale for comparison with the reference cultivar Kenneutari No. 2. The yield of Aeryni 6 (76.0 g) was 113.0% compared with the reference cultivar, Kenneutari No. 2, and its quality was 6.8, while that of the reference strain was 5.7. An independent t-test revealed significant differences between the days for harvest, yield, and quality of the two cultivars. The new and reference cultivars were discriminated by PCR amplification of URP2 and URP11 and a confrontation cultivation.

Investigation on the Use of Paraquat and Diquat as a Desiccant for Sesame Harvest-Aid (참깨 수확을(收穫) 위한 건조제(乾燥劑)로서 Paraquat와 Diaquat의 이용(利用)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究))

  • Experiments were carried out to investigate the utilization of paraquat and diquat as desiccants for harvest-aid of sesame. When paraquat and diquat were sprayed at 3days or 3hours before cutting of sesame plants, moisture content in treated plots was evenly rapidly decreased and sesame yeild was not significantly different as compared with that in untreated plot. Percentage of germination of sesame seed in treated plots was similar to that in untreated check. Residual amount in sesame seed was not detectable when these chemicals were treated with 250ppm at 3days before cutting of sesame plant. Percentage of thrashing was high in sesame plants treated with paraquat and diauat with the lapse of time after cutting. Required labor in thrashing of sesame was reduced when applied with these chemicals. Harvest efficiency of sesame after spray of paraquat and diquat was good by comparison with the traditional practice.
