Virus-like symptoms including stunt, severe mosaic with malformation of leaves, fern-like leaves and abnormal petals were observed from an African impatiens (Impatiens walleriana) grown in a plant nursery in Icheon, Korea. Serological analysis using immuno-strip kits for viruses reported in African impatiens indicated that Cucumber mosaic virus (named CMV-Im) was a causal agent for the symptomatic African impatiens. Biological properties of CMV-Im were analyzed using responses of host plant species, suggesting that CMV-Im is a typical strain that belongs to CMV subgroup I. RT-PCR analysis verified CMV-Im infection from naturally infected African impatiens or mechanically inoculated some host species. Analysis of multiple alignments of CMV capsid protein (CP) sequences showed that CMV-Im shared high CP amino acids identities with other CMV strains. Phylogenetic tree analysis for the CP sequences of CMV-Im and representative CMV strains confirmed that CMV is a typical member of CMV subgroup I. To our knowledge, it is the first report of CMV in African impatiens in Korea.
We observed yellow catfish Pelteobagrus fulvidraco fingerlings cultured in land ponds in Korea swimming in a corkscrew spiral pattern while hanging head-up and tail-down at the water surface, before eventually dying. Externally, these fish displayed “hole in the head” disease, pale gills, and hemorrhages in the base of the pectoral and caudal fins; internally they had liver hemorrhages and kidney discoloration. The bacterium Edwardsiella ictaluri (YCK-01 and YCL-01) was identified in the kidneys and livers of diseased fish via phenotypic characteristics and PCR analysis using the ictaluri-specific primers IVS (an intervening sequence) and IRS (the inter-ribosomal spacer). Infectivity challenges by intraperitoneal and immersion routes showed that a representative bacterial strain (YCK) exhibited strong virulence to yellow catfish, with an LD50 of 3.2×104 CFU/fish and 2.5×106 CFU/mL, respectively. This is the first report of E. ictaluri infection in yellow catfish from Korea.

Hole mobility characteristics of two representative biaxially strained SiGe/Si structures with high Ge contents are studied, They are single channel ($Si/Si_{1-x}Ge_x/Si$ substrate) and dual channel ($Si/Si_{1-y}Ge_y/Si_{1-x}Ge_x/Si$ substrate), where the former consists of a relaxed SiGe buffer layer with 60 % Ge content and a tensile-strained Si layer on top, and for the latter, a compressively strained SiGe layer is inserted between two layers, Owing to the hole mobility performance between a relaxed SiGe film and a compressive-strained SiGe film in the single channel and the dual channel, the hole mobility behaviors of two structures with respect to the Si cap layer thickness shows the opposite trend, Hole mobility increases with thicker Si cap layer for single channel structure, whereas it decreases with thicker Si cap layer for dual channel. This hole mobility characteristics could be easily explained by a simple capacitance model.

Forty-five Salmonella typhimurium isolates were encountered 8 phage types in which DT197 and U302 were the predominant types. The DT104 type which was first found from pig in Korea, and was resistant to chloramphenicol, streptomycin, sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim, tetracycline, gentamicin and nalidixic acid. Twenty-two S enteritidis isolates were encountered 5 phage types in which PT4 were the representative (predominant). S enteritidis isolates were susceptible to all antimicrobial agents. As a result of PFGE analysis for S typhimurium and S enteritidis, PFGE patterns was better than phage typing in discriminating of strains. PFGE patterns were not in accord with phage type even though some strain had the same phage types.
The behaviour of concrete confined by transverse reinforcement is a classical topic. Numerous studies have been conducted to establish the stress-strain relationships for concrete under various confining reinforcement arrangements. Many empirical and semi-empirical formulas exist. Simplified analytical models have also been proposed to evaluate the increase in the strength and ductility of confined concrete. However, relatively few studies have been conducted to utilise advanced computational models for a realistic simulation of the behaviour of concrete confined by transverse reinforcement. As a matter of fact, high fidelity simulations using the latest numerical solvers in conjunction with advanced material constitutive models can be a powerful means to investigating the mechanisms underlying the confining effects of different reinforcement schemes. This paper presents a study on the use of high fidelity finite element models for the investigation of the behaviour of concrete confined by stirrups, as well as the interpretation of the numerical results. The development of the models is described in detail, and the essential modelling considerations are discussed. The models are then validated by simulating representative experimental studies on short columns with different confining reinforcement schemes. The development and distribution of the confining stress and the subsequent increase in the axial strength are examined. The models are shown to be capable of reproducing the behaviour of the confined concrete realistically, paving a way for systematic parametric studies and investigation into complicated confinement, load combination, and dynamic loading situations.
Some virulence proteins of Helicobacter pylori, such as vacuolating cytotoxic protein A (VacA) and cytotoxin-associated gene protein A (CagA) have been reported to be causative agents of various gastric diseases including chronic gastritis, gastric ulcer or gastric adenocarcinoma. The expression level of these virulence proteins can be regulated when H. pylori is exposed to the antibacterial agent, cyanidin 3-O-glucoside (C3G) as previously reported. In this study, we analyzed the quantitative change of various virulence proteins including CagA and VacA by C3G treatment. We used 2-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE) to analyze the quantitative change of representative ten proteome components of H. pylori 60190 ($VacA^+/CagA^+$; standard strain of Eastern type). After 2-DE analysis, spot intensities were analyzed using ImageMaster$^{TM}$ 2-DE Platinum software then each spot was identified using matrix assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) or peptide sequencing using Finnigan LCQ ion trap mass spectrometer (LC-MS/MS). Next, we selected major virulence proteins of H. pylori among quantitatively meaningful ten spots and confirmed the 2-DE results by Western blot analysis. These results suggest that cyanidin 3-O-glucoside can modulate a variety of H. pylori pathogenic determinants.

Metal foam is a porous or cellular structure material and representative property is a very high porosity. Foamed materials have very special properties such as sound, vibration, energy and impact absorption capacity. Especially this properties are widely used for safety demands of architecture, auto and aircraft industry. But metal foam need to increased its compression strength and hardness. This study were researched about Al-Si alloy foams with variation amount of Si contents for their fabrication and properties such as porosity, cell structure, microstructure and mechanical properties. The result are that the range of pore size is 2~4 $mm{\phi}$, the high porosity are 88%, high yield strength is 1.8MPa, the strain ratio is 60~70% and vickers hardness is 33.1~50.6.
Patulin is a food mycotoxin which induces genotoxicity and acute intestinal disease in infants. Patulin mainly originates from fruit putrefactive moulds, especially in apples, which necessitates the maintenance of strong safety standards against patulin for fresh and processed apples. To investigate the patulin producing moulds in Korean apples, 16 morphological types of fungi were isolated from Korean apples and a patulin producing fungus was identified based on a sequence analysis of the region of internal transcribed spacers (ITS5-5.8S-ITS4 region, 505 base pair) and the 26 rRNA D1/D2 region (527 base pair). Morphological analyses were also performed. The isolated patulin producing fungus was found to a representative species of Penicillium crustosum. The maximal patulin production ability of the isolated fungus (P. crustosum) and the patulin producing standard strain (P. griseofulvum, ATCC 46037) in an SY broth medium were 0.32 and 2.46 mg/L, respectively.
In the present work, the elasto-viscoplastic behavior, interactions between grains, and the texture evolution in polycrystalline materials subjected to finite deformations are modeled using a multiscale analysis procedure within a finite element framework. Computational homogenization is used to relate the grain (meso) scale to the macroscale. Specifically, a polycrystal is modeled by a material representative volume element (RVE) consisting of an aggregate of grains, and a periodic distribution of such unit cells is considered to describe material behavior locally on the macroscale. The elastic behavior is defined by a hyperelastic potential, and the viscoplastic response is modeled by a simple power law complemented by a work hardening equation. The finite element framework is based on a Lagrangian formulation, where a kinematic split of the deformation gradient into volume preserving and volumetric parts together with a three-field form of the Hu-Washizu variational principle is adopted to create a stable finite element method. Examples involving simple deformations of an aluminum alloy are modeled to predict inhomogeneous fields on the grain scale, and the macroscopic effective stress-strain curve and texture evolution are compared to those obtained using both upper and lower bound models.

In this study, we prepared yttria stabilized zirconia granules for thermal barrier coatings using a spray drying process. First, we characterized the properties of granules such as flow rate and packing density for utilizing the air plasma spray process. The flow rate and packing density data showed 0.732 g/sec and 2.14 $g/cm^3$, respectively, when we used larger and denser particles, which are better than hollow granules or smaller spherical granules. Second, we chose larger, spherical granules fabricated in alcohol solvent as starting powders and sprayed it on the bondcoat/nimonic alloy by an atmospheric plasma spray process varying the process parameters, the feeding rate, gun speed and spray distance. Finally, we evaluated representative thermal and mechanical characteristics. The thermal expansion coefficients of the coatings were $11{\sim}12.7{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ and the indentation stress measured was 2.5 GPa at 0.15 of indentation strain.
