Fas-associated death domain protein (FADD) recruits and activates procaspase-8 through interactions between the death effector domains of these two proteins. Cellular FLICE-inhibitory protein (c-FLIP) was identified as a molecule with sequence homology to caspase-8. It has been postulated that c-FLIP prevents formation of the competent death-inducing signaling complex in a ligand-dependent manner, through its interaction with FADD and/or caspase-8. However, the interaction of FADD and $c-FLIP_s$ (short form) in apoptosis signaling has been controversially discussed. We show the purification and the characterization of human full-length FADD and $c-FLIP_s$ expressed in Escherichia coli. The purified FADD and $c-FLIP_s$ are shown as homogeneity, respectively, in SDS-PAGE analysis and light-scattering measurements. The folding properties of the $\alpha$-helical structure of FADD and the super-secondary structure of $c-FLIP_s$ proteins were characterized by circular dichroism spectroscopy. Furthermore, we report here a series of biochemical and biophysical data for FADD-$c-FLIP_s$ binding in vitro. The binding of both FADD and $c-FLIP_s$ proteins was detected by BIAcore biosensor, fluorescence measurement, and size-exclusion column (SEC).

Lupoid leishmaniasis is a unique form of cutaneous leishmaniasis characterized by unusual clinical features and a chronic relapsing course, mostly caused by infection with Leishmania tropica. In this clinical form, 1-2 yr after healing of the acute lesion, new papules and nodules appear at the margin of the remaining scar. Herein, we describe a case of this clinical form that was resistant to 2 courses of treatments: systemic glucantime and then a combination therapy with allopurinol and systemic glucantime. However, marked improvement was seen after a combination therapy with topical trichloroacetic acid solution (50%) and systemic glucantime, and there were no signs of recurrence after 1 yr of follow-up.

Objectives: This study reported a clinical case of a chronic diarrhea patient who showed improvement with Korean medicine treatment. Methods: A patient with chronic diarrhea was treated with herbal medicine (Omae-hwan and Omae-hwan-ryo), acupuncture, cupping, and moxibustion. Changes in stool form were measured using the Bristol Stool Scale (BSS). The frequency of defecation was checked every day. The Short Form 36-Item (SF-36) was used to compare patients' quality of life before and after treatment. Results: Korean medicine treatment improved the stool form, frequency of defecation, and quality of life. Conclusion: Korean medicine treatment containing Omae-hwan and Omae-hwan-ryo improves clinical symptoms and quality of life.

Reactive metals like aluminum generate hydrogen gas when it reacts with water. Aluminum, despite its high chemical affinity with water, cannot continue the reaction due to the passive oxide layers formed on its surface. When the reaction is assisted by electrical energy dissipation in the form of discharge, the reaction is more likely to be sustained. In this report, some preliminary experimental results are presented regarding the hydrogen generation based on this scheme.

Subdural empyema is a rare form of intracranial sepsis associated with high morbidity and mortality. The most frequent cause is extension of paranasal sinusitis through emissary veins or of mastoiditis through the mucosa, bone, and dura mater. Development of subdural empyema after pyogenic meningitis is known to be very unusual in adults. We report a rare case of fatal subdural empyema, an unusual complication of pyogenic meningitis. Our bitter experience suggests that subdural empyema should be borne in mind in patient with pyogenic meningitis who exhibit neurological deterioration.

In this paper, we report on a set of new algorithms to realize a nonlinear compressed-domain video/audio editor that overcomes various realization problems. For efficiency, the underlying algorithm, which uses a central data structure in the form of doubled linked lists, performs soft edits of cut and paste (which, in turn, involves soft implementations of frame type conversion) and addresses problems relating to video/audio synchronization and random access, and decoder buffer control.

Maxillary anterior crown fractures are a common form of injury that mainly affects children and adolescents. The position of maxillary incisors and their eruptive pattern carries a significant risk for trauma. In the pre-adhesive era, fractured teeth needed to be restored either with pin-retained inlays or cast restorations that sacrificed healthy tooth structure and were a challenge for dentists to match with adjacent teeth. But. recently the development of adhesive dentistry has allowed dentists to use the patient's own fragment to restore the fractured tooth. The purpose of this paper is to present 2 cases of reattachment of fractured teeth which had different fracture mode, and to evaluate prognosis of cases.

Bore evacuator which have circular structure of cylindrical form is located at tube, and its function is to evacuate toxic gases generated during firing intervals. Between bore evacuator and bore interior, gas flow field is developed through the nozzles, and the charging and discharging process is formed. By these flow cycle(charging and discharging) the evacuation effect can be generated. This report contains an analyses and results consideration about bore evacuator flowfield.

More than 100 isolates of Stemphylium obtained form leaf blight lesions of garlic (Allium sativum), onion (A. cepa) and leek (A. fistulosum) were identified as Stemphylium vesicarium (Wallr.) Simm. based on various morphological characteristics rather than S. botryosum Wallr. previously reported on those plants in Korea. In controlled inoculations, the pathogen induced the disease symptoms on leaves of garlic 7 days after inoculation. Onion and leek were also artificially infected by the fungus. This is the first report of S. vesicarium causing a leaf blight of garlic, onion and leek in Korea.

Medullary carcinoma (MC) of the breast is an uncommon histologic form of infiltrating ductal carcinoma and the cytologic features of MC are not well delineated. We recently experienced a case of fine needle aspiration cytology of MC of the breast. The characteristic cytopathologic features were cellular aspirate consisting of large, pleomorphic cells in background of many single to clusters of lymphocytes.
