In this study, an automated culture media replacement system was developed to analyze changes in the contraction characteristics of cardiomyocytes according to the state of the culture media. For the long-term storage of culture media, a Peltier refrigerator with a temperature of 5 to 8℃ was provided and a pH of 7.4 was maintained. The cell culture media of the cardiomyocytes was continuously replaced using interlocking pumps at a flow rate of 0.83 μl/h. The cardiomyocytes in which the culture media was replaced automatically demonstrated lower heartbeats per minute compared to samples in which there was no replacement. However, these cardiomyocytes moved more uniformly and produced greater displacement in one heartbeat cycle. It was observed that the sarcomere length of the cardiomyocytes increased due to the automated culture media replacement system. These cardiomyocytes were found to demonstrate better maturation compared to the control group. The maturation of cardiomyocytes was verified through staining images. The proposed automated culture media replacement system generates a uniform heart rate and improvements in contraction force. Based on the study, patient-specific drug toxicity assessments can be conducted using differentiated cardiomyocytes in induced pluripotent stem cells.
This paper presents and analyzes the performance of a weighted-window based cache replacement policy for the efficient media caching in streaming media cache servers. The proposed policy makes, for each cached object, use of the reference count, reference time, amount of media delivered to clients and, in particular, the periodic patterns of user requests. Also, by giving weights to the recently referenced media contents, the replacement policy adequately and swiftly reflects the ever-changing characteristics of users preferences. The simulation studies show that the performance of the proposed policy has improved over the conventional policies such as LRU, LFU and SEG - in terms of hit ratio, byte hit ratio, delayed start and cache input.
The development of proxy caching is essential in the area of video-on-demand (VoD) to meet users' expectations. VoD requires high bandwidth and creates high traffic due to the nature of media. Many researchers have developed proxy caching models to reduce bandwidth consumption and traffic. Proxy caching keeps part of a media object to meet the viewing expectations of users without delay and provides interactive playback. If the caching is done continuously, the entire cache space will be exhausted at one stage. Hence, the proxy server must apply cache replacement policies to replace existing objects and allocate the cache space for the incoming objects. Researchers have developed many cache replacement policies by considering several parameters, such as recency, access frequency, cost of retrieval, and size of the object. In this paper, the Weighted-Rank Cache replacement Policy (WRCP) is proposed. This policy uses such parameters as access frequency, aging, and mean access gap ratio and such functions as size and cost of retrieval. The WRCP applies our previously developed proxy caching model, Hot-Point Proxy, at four levels of replacement, depending on the cache requirement. Simulation results show that the WRCP outperforms our earlier model, the Dual Cache Replacement Policy.

To support the QoS streams for large scale clients, the internal resources of VOD servers should be utilized based on the characteristics of the streaming media service. Among the various resources in the server, the main memory is used for the buffer space to the media data loaded from the disks and the buffer hit ratio has a great impact upon the server performance. However, if the buffer data with high hit ratio are replaced for the new media data as a result of the number of clients and the required movie titles are increased, the negative impact on the scalability of server performance is occurred. To address this problem, the buffer replacement policy considers the intrinsic characteristics of the streaming media such as the sequential access to large volume data and the highly disproportionate preference to specific movies. In this paper, the preference-based segment buffer replacement policy is proposed in the cluster-based VOD server to exploit the characteristics of the streaming media. Since the proposed method reflects both the temporal locality by the clients' preference and the spatial locality by the sequential access to media data, the buffer hit ratio would be improved as compared to the existing buffer replacement policy. The enhanced buffer hit ratio causes the fact that the performance scalability of the cluster-based VOD server is linearly improved as the number of cluster nodes is increased.
Railway point machines act as actuators that provide different routes to trains by driving switchblades from the current position to the opposite one. Since point failure caused by the aging effect can significantly affect railway operations with potentially disastrous consequences, replacement detection of point machine at an appropriate time is critical. In this paper, we propose a replacement condition detection method of point machine in railway condition monitoring systems using electrical current signals, after analyzing and relabeling domestic in-field replacement data by means of OLAP(On-Line Analytical Processing) operations in the multidimensional data cube into "does-not-need-to-be replaced" and "needs-to-be-replaced" data. The system enables extracting suitable feature vectors from the incoming electrical current signals by DWT(Discrete Wavelet Transform) with reduced feature dimensions using PCA(Principal Components Analysis), and employs SVM(Support Vector Machine) for the real-time replacement detection of point machine. Experimental results with in-field replacement data including points anomalies show that the system could detect the replacement conditions of railway point machines with accuracy exceeding 98%.
To figure out optimum culturing condition for $in$$vitro$ yam ($Dioscorea$$opposita$ Thunb.) production, various media components and environmental controls were evaluated, effective temperature, light condition and timing of the liquid media replacement for multiplication of yam in liquid culture were determined in this study. There was no visible difference detected for $15^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$ temperature conditions. At $25^{\circ}C$, continuous light condition was more effective compared to 16 hour light/ 8 hour dark condition. Effect of media replacement was tested, and approximately 5 more microtubers obtained and 70% of increase in weight was detected when media replacement was performed. Timing for media replacement was tested at 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 weeks after initial culture for 12 weeks. Considering both number and weight of microtubers, replacement of media 6 weeks after initial culture was most effective. In terms of component of media, significant increase in weight of microtubers was observed in MS media containing sucrose $60g{\cdot}L^{-1}$. In summary, the most effective condition for $in$$vitro$ propagation of chinese yam is replacing medium 6 weeks after initial inoculation with MS medium containing sucrose $60g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ in continuous light condition.
Computer graphics(CG) is being important technique in media contents such as movie and TV. Especially, face replacement technique which replaces the faces between different images have been studied as a typical technology of CG by academia and researchers for a long time. In this paper, we propose the face replacement method between target and reference images under different illumination environment without 3D model. In experiments, we verified that the proposed method could naturally replace the faces between reference and target images under different illumination condition.

To support large storage capacity and real-time characteristics of continuous media storage systems, we need to improve the performance of disk I/O subsystems. To improve the performance, we exploited buffer sharing scheme that reduces the number of disk I/Os. We utilized the advance knowledge of continuous media streams that is used to anticipate data demands, and so Promoting the sharing of blocks in buffers. In this paper, we proposed a buffer replacement algorithm that enables subsequent users requesting the same data to share buffer efficiently. The proposed algorithm manages buffers by utilizing reference interval information of blocks. In order to verify validity of the proposed algorithm, we accomplished simulation experiments and showed the results of performance improvements compared to traditional buffer replacement algorithms.
Streptococus pneumoniae is an important cause of invasive infections as well as non-invasive infections such as acute otitis media and sinusitis both in children and adults. Resistance of S. pneumoniae to multiple antimicrobials is increasing and poses therapeutic challenges, and prevention became more important. 23-valent polysaccharide vaccine has been used for the last several decades, but is not effective in children <2 years of age, the highest risk group of invasive diseases. Recently, a 7-valent pneumococcal protein conjugate vaccine(PCV) which is effective in infants and young children has been developed. The efficacy of PCVs against invasive pneumococcal disease and pneumonia is well established and is documented in several well-conducted studies. However, the effect of PCVs on otitis media is less obvious and more complex. PCVs clearly reduce diseases caused by vaccine-type(VT) pneumococci, but replacement of VT serotypes by non-VT serotypes in nasopharyngeal carriage of S. pneumoniae is responsible for the increase in acute otitis media caused by non-VT serotypes. Three years after introduction of PCV in the US, some increase of invasive infections with serotype 19A possibly due to serotype switching within certain vaccine type strains has been noted. Since most antibiotic-resistance in S. pneumoniae is confined to VT serotypes, vaccine use also reduces antibiotic resistance. With development of PCV, there was a great advance in the prevention of pneumococcal diseases, but replacement with potential virulent organisms and development of antibiotic resistance in non-VT pneumococci is a possibility that needs careful monitoring.
Under the internet age, the competition among recruiting intermediaries including online and offline players has been intensified for several years. Therefore, their business processes or business models have also been transformed to be able to earn the competitive advantages. For these reasons, the traditional players like offline-based recruiting companies have willingly or unwillingly experienced the competitive disadvantages on the recruit battle ground. The online recruiting intermediaries, who newly participated in this industry and based on the internet environment, however, seized on the competitive advantages with the richness and the reach traits of online media. Under this context, the offline traditional intermediaries, who have been threatened by new online entries, must make a replacement of traditional trading mechanisms with alternative trading mechanisms like IT-enabled intermediaries. In this study by exploratory approach, we investigate the phases of transformation of the traditional recruiting intermediaries, changes in business strategies of offline-based firms, and impacts of online media in e-recruiting industry.
