Historic buildings are history of human kind and a crystal of culture. Therefore, we have a responsibility and obligation to succeed to descendants. Once such heritage is damaged, it is hard to restore its original form. Thus, various attempts to preserve its value and authenticity have been made internationally. Among these, the international preservation tendency of historic building in terms of materials has been given to the preservation of materials as well as the preservation of appearance. In accordance with such trend, Korea also presented an equivalent general principle, and has managed historic buildings with the separate related instruction. The most general method to preserve historic buildings in Korea is a repair work. Since the foundation of Korea, the repair work tendency has been carried out in the principle of phenomenon change and original form maintenance. But, such tendency focuses on the appearance such as style, structure and trimming method, and there is insufficient consideration on the authentic preservation of materials. Accordingly, this study attempts to examine preservation principle and methods in the repair works, and also to investigate the afforestation condition for the restoration work. And, by suggesting preservation method of authentic materials, it aims to prepare the reference for the future repair work.
Background: This study evaluated the efficacy of the endoscopic medial orbital wall repair by comparing it with the conventional transcaruncular method. This surgical approach differs from the established endoscopic technique in that we push the mesh inside the orbit rather than placing it over the defect. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 40 patients with isolated medial orbital blowout fractures who underwent medial orbital wall reconstruction. Twenty-six patients underwent endoscopic repair, and 14 patients underwent external repair. All patients had preoperative computed tomography scans taken to determine the defect size. Pre- and postoperative exophthalmometry, operation time, the existence of diplopia, and pain were evaluated and compared between the two methods. We present a case showing our procedure. Results: The operation time was significantly shorter in the endoscopic group (44.7 minutes vs. 73.9 minutes, p= 0.035). The preoperative defect size, enophthalmos correction rate, and pain did not significantly differ between the two groups. All patients with preoperative diplopia, eyeball movement limitation, or enophthalmos had their symptoms resolved, except for one patient who had preexisting strabismus. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that endoscopic medial orbital wall repair is not inferior to the transcaruncular method. The endoscopic approach seems to reduce the operation time, probably because the dissection process is shorter, and no wound repair is needed. Compared to the previous endoscopic method, our method is not complicated, and is more physiological. Larger scale studies should be performed for validation.

The process of selecting a repair material is a typical one of multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problems. In this study Analytical Hierarch Process was applied to solve this MCDM problem. Many factors affecting a process to select an optimal repair material can be classified into quantitative and qualitative requirements and this study handled only quantitative items. Quantitative requirements in the optimal selection model for repair material were divided into two parts, namely, the required chemical performance and the required physical performance. The former is composed of alkali-resistance, chloride permeability and electrical resistivity. The latter is composed of compressive strength, tensile strength, adhesive strength, drying shrinkage, elasticity and thermal expansion. The result of the study shows that this method is the useful and rational engineering approach in the problem concerning the selection of one out of many candidate repair materials even if this study was limited to repair material only for chloride-deteriorated concrete.
In the repair of unilateral complete cleft lip, the most popular method is the rotation-advancement by Millard. Despite advantages of Millard repair, a few pitfalls exist. Above all, some of the scars, at the height of the cleft side philtral ridge, cross the Langer's line. Further, in the repair of complete cleft lip, small triangular lateral lip flap is often added in the base of an advancement flap to level the Cupid's bow. Moreover, preservation of the advancement flap has some negative effects on a primary nasal repair. As a result, the shape of philtrum is somewhat unnatural. Therefore, I applied the extended Mohler repair in the six cases of complete wide cleft lip to get a more esthetic scar. As a result, more natural, straight philtral ridge was obtained, without adding small triangular flap in the base of the advancement flap.
This study experimentally evaluate the bonding performance of repair and strengthening materials. It is very important problem to justify bonding properties between repair and strengthening materials and old concrete. Many previous research and investigation showed that bonding strength of reinforcing materials determines the strengthening effect and the durability of repair work. Therefore, menifestation of bonding properties and the improvement of bonding performance of repair and strengthening materials are very important. In order to improve the perforamnce of repair work, it needs to investigate the behavior of bonding materials, such as stress distribution along the bonding area and the long term performance of the material. The target repair methods are steel plate addition technique and repair mortar method, and the test parameters studied in this paper include epoxy thickness, bonding surface texture, and bonding area.
Recently the growth of the renewable energy production has caused the flexible operation in LNG combined cycle power plant. Due to the rapid start and stop operations, large CrMoV castings used for turbine casings and valve bodies could be distorted and lead to replacement or welding repair. This study was performed to find out the characteristics of the repair welding for a damaged CrMoV casting steel. A typical field repair method (arc & TIG welding) was applied to making specimens. The degraded N2 packing head sample from the steam turbine was used. The evaluations of weldments were carried out in terms of microstructural characterization, microhardness measurements, tensile, creep-rupture and fatigue tests. Color etching was also applied for better understanding of welding microstructures. As the boundary between HAZ and base material was deteriorated by welding, it caused microstructural changes formed during PWHT and the shortening of the remaining residual life. By comparing the properties according to repair welding method, it was possible to derive what important welding factors were. As a result, arc welding method is more suitable for repair welding on CrMoV castings.
The effect of 3-aminobenzamide (3AB), an inhibitor of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase, on ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS)-or bleomycin (BLM)-induced DNA repair synthesis and chromosome aberrations was examined during the cell cycle of Chinese hamster ovary (CHO)-K$_1$ cells. The synchronized cells were obtained by using thymidine double block method and mitotic selection method. Three assays were employed in this study: unscheduled DNA synthesis, alkaline elution and chromosome aberrations. 3AB alone did not induce DNA repair and chromosome aberrations in all phases. The post-treatment with 3AB inhibited DNA repair synthesis induced by EMS or BLM in G$_2$ phase, whereas 3AB did not affect chromosome aberrations induced by EMS or BLM in all phases. These results suggest that 3AB aggravates the cell cycle disturbance which occur after DNA damage, and leads to an accumulation of cells at G$_2$ phase, and inhibits DNA repair synthesis, while the effect 3AB on chromosome aberrations may need reevaluated.
Corrosion of reinforced concrete structures in marine environment is one of the most important mechanism of deterioration. The conventional repair techniques of concrete structure damaged by chloride attack consist of removing damaged concrete, cleaning rebar and patching with cement-based materials. However, recently, this method was considered to be ineffective for marine concrete structure in tidal zone. It is necessary to select proper repair method for domestic marine environment which shows broad tidal zone. This paper reports the results of repair of highway concrete bridge damaged by chloride attack in domestic marine environment.
Due to the numerous environmental factors, cracks and corrosion are frequently occured especially in old steel bridge, which deteriorate the structural integrity; thus bring about the problems of structural safety of the steel bridge. Therefore, repair and reinforcement are required for the damaged structure. the replacement repair welding method is spotlighted for its brilliant features, i.e. it can be achieved without incurring traffic dislocation. the method cuts the damaged parts and replaces them with new steel plate by welding under live loads. However, the mechanical behavior of the welded joints under cyclic loads due to the traffic which passes along bridge is not clarified. In this paper, the fatigue strength of the replacement repair welded joints was investigated in order to improve reliability in the repair welded joints of old steel bridge.
In this study, LCC(Life Cycle Cost) evaluation technique is used for the purpose of accumulation of basic data required for such integrative system construction. We predicted the degradation time of concrete and repair material by neutralization through FEM analysis, and utilized the result for LCC evaluation It turned out that the repair method of construction in the most economical initial measure against degradation and a durable period can be chosen through the LCC evaluation in consideration of the degradation prediction using FEM analysis and the initial construction expense in a durable period and repair expense, and the number of repair times.
