This study aimed to propose the method of linking satellite image-based forest fire data to supplement the limitation of forest fire survey data that records only the ignition location and area of forest fire. For this purpose, a method was derived to link the fire survey data provided by the Korea Forest Service between January 2012 and December 2019 with MODIS and VIIRS image-based forest fire data. As a result, MODIS and VIIRS-based forest fire data out of 191 wildfires in the forest fire survey data were able to identify 11% and 44% of fire damage area, respectively. An average of 56% of forest damage area was extracted from VIIRS-based forest fire data compared to forest fire areas identified by high-resolution Sentinel-2A satellites. Therefore, for large-scale forest fires, VIIRS wildfire data can be used to compensate for the limitations of forest fire survey data that records only the ignition location and area.
This paper presents a method for automatic 3-d building reconstruction using high resolution aerial imagery. First, by using edge preserving filtering, noise is eliminated and then images are segmented by watershed algorithm, which preserves location of edge pixels. To extract line segments between control points from boundary of each region, we calculate curvature of each pixel on the boundary and then find the control points. Line segment linking is performed according to direction and length of line segments and the location of line segments is adjusted using gradient magnitudes of all pixels of the line segment. Coplanar grouping and pplygonal patch formation are performed per region by selecting 3-d line segments that are matched using epipolar geometry and flight information. The algorithm has been applied to high resolution aerial images and the results show accurate 3D building reconstruction.

In this paper, we developed a technique to graphically display impact effects for remote monitoring or simulation systems. A remote monitoring or simulation system is being used to find a repair time or to prevent accidents while inspecting equipment or facilities in an industrial site in real time. These systems provide visual information to users so that they can analyze problem situations. The technique proposed in this paper is a method of modeling equipment and facilities using 3D graphics, and displaying the location of impact and damage occurring in the equipment inside using volume rendering. This technique has the advantage that the problem can be identified more accurately by displaying the impact animation by volume rendering at the location of the impact and damage inside the equipment. And it is expected that the problem situation can be identified more quickly through more intense visual effects.
Recently, in the engineering area, there is an increasing need for researchers at a distance to share the result of the experiment, without having to visit the experiment facilities. Especially in the civil engineering, researchers feel the need for participating in a experiment conducted at a distant location. In addition, it is suggested that high-cost facilities should be used by remote researchers thereby increasing the utilization rate. This paper proposes a remote experiment environment in civil engineering that are being developed in a project called Korea Construction Engineering Development(KOCED), which connects major civil engineering experiment facilities using grid technology, allows researchers to participate in a remote experiment, and has the experiment results shared by remote researchers automatically. Then, based on the suggested environment, we designed a hybrid test facility that involves two physical experiment facility sites and one numerical simulation site that are geographically apart. Then, we implemented its prototype and ran some tests, which showed a possibility of grid-based civil engineering experiment.
In ubiquitous computing environment, OSGi has applied to many areas such as digital mobile phones, vehicles, telematics, embedded appliances, residential gateways, industrial computers, desktop PCs, and high-end servers including mainframes. Therefore, interoperability is required for remote OSGi services which are built on various devices. In this paper, we proposed a method which was able to interoperate remote OSGi services using RMI paradigm. RMI is a representative middleware technology in distributed computing environment. The suggested method is based on the standard OSGi technology. It is possible to provide remote OSGi service registration, finding, and binding methods which were suitable for the OSGi service-oriented architecture. We also provided reliability of the dynamic remote OSGi services by maintaining consistent properties of them, and we could provide location transparency of the remote OSGi services by generating proxy bundles and proxy services dynamically.

Most frequency-domain remote sensing image watermarking algorithms embed watermarks at random locations, which have negative impact on the watermark invisibility. In this study, we propose an adaptive watermarking scheme for remote sensing images that considers the information complexity to select where to embed watermarks to improve watermark invisibility without affecting algorithm robustness. The scheme converts remote sensing images from RGB to YCbCr color space, performs two-level DWT on luminance Y, and selects the high frequency coefficient of the low frequency component (HHY2) as the watermark embedding domain. To achieve adaptive embedding, HHY2 is divided into several 8*8 blocks, the entropy of each sub-block is calculated, and the block with the maximum entropy is chosen as the watermark embedding location. During embedding phase, the watermark image is also decomposed by two-level DWT, and the resulting high frequency coefficient (HHW2) is then embedded into the block with maximum entropy using α- blending. The experimental results show that the watermarked remote sensing images have high fidelity, indicating good invisibility. Under varying degrees of geometric, cropping, filtering, and noise attacks, the proposed watermarking can always extract high identifiable watermark images. Moreover, it is extremely stable and impervious to attack intensity interference.
The cross flow turbine is economical because of its simple structure. For remote rural region, there are needs for a more simple structure and very low head cross flow turbines. However, in this kind of locations, the water from upstream always flows into the turbine with some other materials such as sand and pebble. These materials will be damage to the runner blade and shorten the turbine lifespan. Therefore, there is a need to develop a new type of cross flow turbine for the remote rural region where there is availability of abundant resources. The new design of the cross flow turbine has an inlet open duct, without guide vane and nozzle to simplify the structure. However, the turbine with inlet open duct and very low head shows relatively low efficiency. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to optimize the shape of the turbine inlet to improve the efficiency, and investigate the internal flow of a very low head cross flow turbine. There are two steps to optimize the turbine inlet shape. Firstly, by changing the turbine open angle along with changing the turbine inlet open duct bottom line (IODBL) location to investigate the internal flow. Secondly, keeping the turbine IODBL location at the maximum efficiency achieved at the first step, and changing the turbine IODBL angle to improve the performance. The result shows that there is a 7.4% of efficiency improvement by optimizing turbine IODBL location (open angle), and there is 0.3% of efficiency improvement by optimizing the turbine IODBL angle.
In order to correct the provided RPC and DEM generated from the high-resolution satellite images, the acquisition of the ground control point (GCP) must be preceded. This task is a very complicate that requires field surveys, GPS surveying, and image coordinate reading corresponding to GCPs. In addition, since it is difficult to set up and measure a GCP in areas where access is difficult or impossible (tidal flats, polar regions, volcanic regions, etc.), an alternative method is needed. In this paper, we propose a 3D surface matching technique using only the established ground coordinate package, avoiding the ground-image-location survey of the GCP to correct the DEM produced from WorldView-2 satellite images and the provided RPCs. The location data of the public control points were obtained from the National Geographic Information Institute website, and the DEM was corrected by performing 3D surface matching with this package. The accuracy of 3-axis translation and rotation obtained by the matching was evaluated using pre-measured GPS checkpoints. As a result, it was possible to obtain results within 2 m in the plane location and 1 m in height.
Recently, RFID has become popular in the field of remote sensing applications. Location awareness is one of the most important keys to deploying RFID for advanced object tracking. Generally, multiple reference RF stations or additional sensors are used for the location sensing with RFID, but, particularly in indoor environments, spatial layout and cost problems limit the applicability of those approaches. In this paper, we propose a novel method for location sensing with active RFID systems not requiring the need for reference stations or additional sensors. The system triangulates the position of RF signal source using the signal pattern of the loop antenna connected to the power detector. The power detector consists of a signal strength detector and a signal analysis unit. The signal analysis unit indicates the signal strength and serial number using the signal from the strength detector, and provides the direction of the signal to the application target. We designed three different signal analysis units depending on the threshold type. The developed system can sense the direction to the transponder located over 10 m away within the maximum error of $5^{\circ}$. It falls within a reasonable range in our normal office environment.
