Several research cases using remote sensing methods to analyze changes of storage and dynamics of groundwater aquifer were reviewed in this paper. The status of groundwater storage, in an area with regional scale, could be qualitatively inferred from geological feature, surface water altimetry and topography, distribution of vegetation, and difference between precipitation and evapotranspiration. These qualitative indicators could be measured by geological lineament analysis, airborne magnetic survey, DEM analysis, LAI and NDVI calculation, and surface energy balance modeling. It is certain that GRACE and InSAR have received remarkable attentions as direct utilization from satellite data for quantification of groundwater storage and dynamics. GRACE, composed of twin satellites having acceleration sensors, could detect global or regional microgravity changes and transform them into mass changes of water on surface and inside of the Earth. Numerous studies in terms of groundwater storage using GRACE sensor data were performed with several merits such that (1) there is no requirement of sensor data, (2) auxiliary data for quantification of groundwater can be entirely obtained from another satellite sensors, and (3) algorithms for processing measured data have continuously progressed from designated data management center. The limitations of GRACE for groundwater storage measurement could be defined as follows: (1) In an area with small scale, mass change quantification of groundwater might be inaccurate due to detection limit of the acceleration sensor, and (2) the results would be overestimated in case of combination between sensor and field survey data. InSAR can quantify the dynamic characteristics of aquifer by measuring vertical micro displacement, using linear proportional relation between groundwater head and vertical surface movement. However, InSAR data might now constrain their application to arid or semi-arid area whose land cover appear to be simple, and are hard to apply to the area with the anticipation of loss of coherence with surface. Development of GRACE and InSAR sensor data preprocessing algorithms optimized to topography, geology, and natural conditions of Korea should be prioritized to regionally quantify the mass change and dynamics of the groundwater resources of Korea.

Data transmission via the car driver's tethered smart phone may have a volume-dependent billing in case car driver' phone transmits data in real-time to the remote data center. The on-board diagnosis data generated are temporary stored locally to mobile remote diagnosis application on the car driver's phone, and then transmit to the data center later when car driver connects to the Internet. To increase the easiest of using the remote vehicle application without blocking other tasks to be executing on the cloud, node.js stands as a suitable candidate for handling tasks of data storage on the cloud via mobile network. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed architecture by simulating a preliminary case study of an android application responsible of real time analysis by using a vehicle-to- smart phones applications interface approach that considers the smart phones to act as a remote user which passes driver inputs and delivers output from external applications. In this paper, we propose a study on development of Remote Vehicle fault diagnostic system features web server architecture based event loop approach using node.js platform, and wireless communication to handle vehicle diagnostics data to a data center.
The Electric Power Subsystem (EPS) is one of the most critical systems on any satellite because nearly every subsystem requires power. This makes the choice of power systems the most important task facing satellite designers. The main purpose of the Satellite EPS is to provide continuous, regulated and conditioned power to all the satellite subsystems. It has to withstand radiation, thermal cycling and vacuums in hostile space environments, as well as subsystem degradation over time. The EPS power characteristics are determined by both the parameters of the system itself and by the satellite orbit. After satellite separation from the launch vehicle (LV) to its orbit, in almost all situations, the satellite subsystems (attitude determination and control, communication and onboard computer and data handling (OBC&DH)), take their needed power from a storage battery (SB) and solar arrays (SA) besides the consumed power in the EPS management device. At this point (separation point, detumbling mode), the satellite's angular motion is high and the orientation of the solar arrays, with respect to the Sun, will change in a non-uniform way, so the amount of power generated by the solar arrays will be affected. The objective of this research is to select satellite EPS component types, to estimate solar array illumination parameters and to determine the efficiency of solar arrays during both detumbling and normal operation modes.
The currently operating NASA/GFZ Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission is designed to measure small mass changes over a large spatial scale, including the mapping of continental water storage changes and other geophysical signals in the form of monthly temporal gravity field. The European Space Agency's Gravity field and steady state Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) space gravity gradiometer (SGG) mission is anticipated to determine the mean Earth gravity field with an unprecedented geoid accuracy of several cm (rms) with wavelength of 130km or longer. In this paper, we present a summary of present GRACE studies for the recovery of hydrological signals in the Amazon basin using alternative processing and filtering techniques, and local inversion to enhance the temporal and spatial resolutions by two-folds or better. Simulation studies for the potential GRACE detection of slow deformations due to Nazca-South America plate convergence and glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) signals show that these signals are at present difficult to detect without long-term data averaging and further improvement of GRACE measurement accuracy.
The SPES (Selective Production of Exotic Species) facility, currently under development at Legnaro National Laboratories of INFN, aims at the production of intense RIB (Radioactive Ion Beams) employing the Isotope Separation On-Line (ISOL) technique for interdisciplinary research. The radioactive isotopes of interest are produced by the interaction of a multi-foil uranium carbide target with a 40 MeV 200 μA proton beam generated by a cyclotron proton driver. The Target Ion Source (TIS) is the core of the SPES project, here the radioactive nuclei, mainly neutron-rich isotopes, are stopped, extracted, ionized, separated, accelerated and delivered to specific experimental areas. Due to efficiency reasons, the TIS unit needs to be replaced periodically during operation. In this highly radioactive environment, the employment of autonomous systems allows the manipulation, transport, and storage of the TIS unit without the need for human intervention. A dedicated remote handling infrastructure is therefore under development to fulfill the functional and safety requirement of the project. This contribution describes the layout of the SPES target area, where all the remote handling systems operate to grant the smooth operation of the facility avoiding personnel exposure to a high dose rate or contamination issues.

In remote islands PV (Photo Voltaic) panel with BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) supplies electric power to the customers in parallel operation with EG (Engine Generator) to save fuel consumption and to mitigate environmental load. BESS operates in voltage control mode when it supplies power to the load alone, while it operates in current control mode when it supplies power to the load in parallel with EG. This paper proposes a smooth mode change scheme from current control to voltage control of BESS by adding proper initial value to the integral part of voltage control, and a smooth mode change scheme from voltage control to current control by tracking the EG output voltage to the BESS output voltage using PLL (Phase-Locked Loop). The feasibility of proposed schemes was verified through computer simulations with PSCAD/EMTDC, and the feasibility of actual hardware system was verified by experiments with scaled prototype. It was confirmed that the proposed schemes offer a seamless operation in the stand-alone power system in remote islands.
This study compares Static Terrestrial Laser Scanning (STLS)with the conventional Total Station (TS) method for the geometric assessment of cylindrical storage tanks. With the crucial need for maintaining tank integrity in the oil and gas industry, STLS and TS methods are evaluated for their efficacy in assessing tank deformations. Using STLS and TS, the roundness and verticality of two cylindrical tanks were examined. A deformation analysis based on American Petroleum Institute (API) standards was then provided. Key objectives included comparing the two methods according to API standards, evaluating the workflow for STLS point cloud processing, and presenting the pros and cons of the STLS method for tank geometric assessment. The study found that STLS, with its detailed and high-resolution data acquisition, offers a substantial advantage in having a comprehensive structural assessment over TS. However, STLS requires more processing time and prior knowledge about the data to tune certain parameters and achieve accurate assessment. The project outcomes intend to enhance industry professionals' understanding of applying STLS and TS to tank assessments, helping them choose the best method for their specific requirements.

This study discussed the applicability of satellite SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) imagery with regard to reservoir monitoring, and tried the extraction of reservoir storage from multi-temporal C-band RADARSAT-1 SAR backscattering images of Yedang and Goongpyeong agricultural reservoirs, acquired from May to October 2005. SAR technology has been advanced as a complementary and alternative approach to optical remote sensing and in-situ measurement. Water bodies in SAR imagery represent low brightness induced by low backscattering, and reservoir storage can be derived from the backscatter contrast with the level-area-volume relationship of each reservoir. The threshold segmentation over the routine preprocessing of SAR images such as speckle reduction and low-pass filtering concluded a significant correlation between the SAR-derived reservoir storage and the observation record in spite of the considerable disagreement. The result showed up critical limitations for adopting SAR data to reservoir monitoring as follows: the inappropriate specifications of SAR data, the unreliable rating curve of reservoir, the lack of climatic information such as wind and precipitation, the interruption of inside and neighboring land cover, and so on. Furthermore, better accuracy of SAR-based reservoir monitoring could be expected through different alternatives such as multi-sensor image fusion, water level measurement with altimeters or interferometry, etc.

The verification of data integrity is an urgent topic in remote data storage environments with the wide deployment of cloud data storage services. Many traditional verification algorithms focus on the block-oriented verification to resolve the dispute of dynamic data integrity between the data owners and the storage service providers. However, these algorithms scarcely pay attention to the data verification charge and the users' verification experience. The users more concern about the availability of accessed files rather than data blocks. Moreover, the data verification charge limits the number of checked data in each verification. Therefore, we propose a mixed verification protocol to verify the data integrity, which rapidly locates the corrupted files by the file-oriented verification, and then identifies the corrupted blocks in these files by the block-oriented verification. Theoretical analysis and simulation results demonstrate that the protocol reduces the cost of the metadata computation and transmission relative to the traditional block-oriented verification at the expense of little cost of additional file-oriented metadata computation and storage at the data owner. Both the opportunity of data extracted and the scope of suspicious data are optimized to improve the verification efficiency under the same verification cost.
