  • Current operating system and passenger satisfaction level of remote island route are examined in this study. A large quantity of survey was conducted among remote island route passengers and the result was examined in depth The survey result slightly exceeded average effectiveness rating; 2.8 based on a five-point scale was obtained. The survey shows that the service satisfaction level is not very high When long term remote island route development plan is established, a support from the government is expected for survey result to reflect on the development plan.

  • This study aimed to conduct a comprehensive survey of social wasp diversity and its impacts on remote Ulleungdo Island, South Korea. A total of 12 wasp traps were placed across the island, and specimens were collected monthly from May to October. Additional collection was conducted by thoroughly inspecting the areas surrounding the traps. The traps yielded a total of 5,068 individuals, representing two genera and two species. A total of 3,961 Vespa simillima simillima Smith individuals (78.2%) were collected, and 1,107 individuals (21.8%) were identified as Vespula flaviceps flaviceps Smith. Additionally, five individuals of Polistes snelleni de Saussure were collected through sweeping, bringing the total to 5,132 individuals of three genera and three species. It is worth noting that our findings indicate potential misidentifications in the species list of Vespidae found in the literature. Emergency services call centers reported the removal of 60 social wasp nests on Ulleungdo Island between 2018 and 2022, with the highest number of reports occurring from July to September, accounting for 87% of all cases. Dodong-ri and Jeodong-ri, with the highest populations, reported the most incidents, although fortunately, there have been no recent injuries. Past incidents involving the destruction of dried squid products by Vespula species have resulted in significant economic losses, underscoring the need for preventative measures. Furthermore, ongoing surveillance of hornet invasions is essential to safeguard the Jangwon bees being reared on Ulleungdo Island.

  • Satellite communication is not used by many people like mobile communication, but it is a necessary technology for public service and communication services, such as providing the Internet in military, disaster, remote education and medical services, island areas, and infrastructure vulnerable areas. However, most communication modems have problems with two-way communication with server as IP addresses are assigned to floating IP that change every time they communicate with the network. In this paper, we used the Raspberry Pi as the controller of the terminal device to communicate the network through the satellite modem and the PPP protocol, and to solve the problem of the modem with the floating IP, we used the text message function of the satellite modem. Through this process, two-way data links using the Thuraya geostationary orbit satellite were implemented.

  • The purpose of this study is to implement concept of public to passenger ship route to promote benefits and adopt competition principle among ship companies to elevate business efficiency. As of year 2005, passenger ships operate in 106 routes departing from 10 harbors including Mokpo, Masan, and Inchonto provide transportation system to island residents. Contrast to other public transportation systems excluding some tourism routes, this essential passenger ship are unable to fulfill various customer services to the passengers due to stagnation or declination. In addition, route adjustment and flexible passenger ship operation are not expected due to private property right of the route. Therefore, establishment of public transportation system for remote island route is initiated for the connection between cities and islands, boost travel industry of island economy, and balanced growth oh the nation.

  • Land Surface Temperature (LST) is the radiological surface temperature which observed by satellite. It is very important factor to estimate condition of the Earth such as Global warming and Heat island. For these reasons, many countries operate their own satellite to observe the Earth condition. South Korea has many landcovers such as forest, crop land, urban. Therefore, if we want to retrieve accurate LST, we would use high-resolution satellite data. In this study, we made LSTs with 4 LST retrieval algorithms which are used widely with Landsat-8 data which has 30 m spatial resolution. We retrieved LST using equations of Price, Becker et al. Prata, Coll et al. and they showed very similar spatial distribution. We validated 4 LSTs with Moderate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) LST data to find the most suitable algorithm. As a result, every LST shows 2.160 ~ 3.387 K of RMSE. And LST by Prata algorithm show the lowest RMSE than others. With this validation result, we choose LST by Prata algorithm as the most suitable LST to South Korea.

  • Urban trees play an important role in absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, improving air quality, mitigating the urban heat island effect, and providing ecosystem services. To effectively manage and conserve urban trees, accurate spatial information on their location, condition, species, and population is needed. In this study, we propose an algorithm that uses a high-resolution urban tree cover map constructed from deep learning approach to separate trees from the urban land surface and accurately detect tree locations through local maximum filtering. Instead of using a uniform filter size, we improved the tree detection performance by selecting the appropriate filter size according to the tree height in consideration of various urban growth environments. The research output, the location and height of individual trees in human settlement over Suwon, will serve as a basis for sustainable management of urban ecosystems and carbon reduction measures.

  • To meet increasing needs for environmentally sustainable management of coastal area, there has been compelling pressure to establish a cost-effective and long-term coastal water quality (CWQ) monitoring system. A remote CWQ monitoring system, STAMP, has been developed and is in operation along the route between Kyema harbor and Anma Island in the southwestern coastal area of Korea. STAMP uses a PCS phone as a telemetry unit to transmit acquired data for monitoring general water quality parameters, and a routinely operating coastal passenger ship or car ferry. STAMP has various merits of low-cost operations; long-term monitoring with secure instrumentation; and stable real-time telemetry of acquired data with-out the loss and noise. It is expected that the system will serve as a very useful tool in the CWQ managing programs of Korea taking the advantage of many coastal passenger ships in various routes including the ships departing from the coastal industrial cities. The acquired data compiled on suspended surface sediment concentrations (SSSC) will be also valuably helpful in understanding the sediment budget across the routes of the vessel.

  • Satellite communication is not used by many people like mobile communication, but it is a necessary technology for public service and communication services, such as providing the Internet in military, disaster, remote education and medical services, island areas, and infrastructure vulnerable areas. However, on ships and aircraft, mobile communications requiring base stations are either unavailable or restricted in their use. In this paper, we used a Raspberry Pi board as the terminal device to communicate network through satellite modem and PPP protocol, and implemented two-way data link using the text message of the modem to connect to the Thuraya geo-stationary orbit network. In addition, I/O devices were connected to the controller of the terminal equipment to design and implement an IoT device system for ships that can remotely access the system under control and control I/Os and transmit measured data through various sensors.

  • The use of meteorological information is essential in the industrial society. More specialized weather services are required to perform better industrial activities including forestry. A topoclimatological technique, in this study, which makes use of empirical relationships between the topography and the weather in Cheju Island was applied to produce reasonable estimates of monthly air temperatures over remote land area where routine observations are rare. Altitude values of the 250m grid points were first read from a 1 : 25000 topographic map. The mean altitude and other valuable topographical variables were then determined for each $1km^2$ land area. Daily minimum, maximum and mean air temperature data were collected from 19 points in Cheju Island from June 1987 to September 1988. The data were analyzed and grouped into 36 sets by type of air temperature and by month. Each of data set was regressed to the topographical variables to delineate empirical relationships between the local air temperature and the site topography. The total of 36 regression equations were finally selected and the equations were used to calculate the monthly air temperature for each $1km^2$ land area. The outputs were presented in a fine-mesh grid map with a 6-level contour capability.
