Interactive virtual laboratory for unit operations and process systems engineering education in a Web environment (웹기반 화학 단위 공정 가상 실험시스템 개발)

  • Recently the number of lectures of offered as part of distance education courses is increasing due to the necessity of continuing education in this era of rapidly changing technologies. To promote this, Web-based distance education systems have been developed and put into practical use. To step further, we propose a virtual space, distance education platform called interactive virtual laboratory. The proposed system is expected to overcome many obstacles in performing the unit operations laboratory at the current setting. The server/client system implementation was programmed with ASP and Visual Basic. The availability of simple and efficient technological supports for dissemination and remote use of virtual lab systems supports more experimental practices regardless of the number of participating students and their locations. Variety of instruments, process equipments and lab procedures are being added to make it a complete package of virtual lab fur undergraduate unit operations course.

A Study on Characteristics of Dump and Reducing Valve for Hydraulic Remote Control System (유압원격제어를 위한 덤프와 감압밸브의 특성에 관한 연구)

  • In recent, the requirement of remote control of hychaulic system is in- creasing. The actuator unit whose output position is proportional to input electrical signal needs a pressure reducer and a dump valve. The pressure reducer provides a constant regulated pressure and filters contaminants. The dump valve supplies proper pressure to the pressure reducer and unloads when the system is not operated. In this thesis, dump valve and pressure reducer with auxiliary function are studied. The choke in the pressure reducer prevents actuator from supplying higher pressure than necessary pressure at beginning, and the spring constant affects on the dynamic characterisics. In dump valve, it is proved that diameter of servo-slide hold and choke diameter of dump plunger affects on damping response.

  • EMS(Energy Management System: 에너지 관리 시스템)에서 SCADA(Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition: 집중원격감시 시스템)은 RTU(Remote Terminal Unit), RCC(Remote Control Centre) 등을 통해 데이터를 취득한다. 이렇게 취득된 데이터는 토폴로지(Topology)를 구성하고, 계통을 감시하고 해석하는데 사용된다. EMS에서 계통해석 기술은 발전, 송전, 변전, 배전 계통이 유기적으로 결합되어 원활한 전력의 공급과 높은 신뢰도를 제공할 수 있어야 하는데 이를 위해서는 항상 신뢰할 수 있는 데이터를 사용해야 한다. 하지만 SCADA 취득 데이터는 통신 선로 상의 지연 등 통신 오류를 포함하고 있기 때문에 항상 신뢰할 수는 없으며, 오차를 포함한 측정 데이터를 사용하여 계통 해석을 할 경우 계통 해석 결과 전체를 신뢰할 수 없게 된다는 문제점이 있다. 본 논문에서는 원격 장치 신호 품질 불량 시 계통해석 데이터를 보다 신뢰할 수 있도록 취득, 사용하는 방안에 대해 제안한다.

Research on Grouping and Operation Control of Multiple Nodes by Direction in a Wireless Personal Area Network Environment (근거리 무선 네트워크 환경에서 다수 노드의 방향 별 그룹화 및 동작 제어를 위한 연구)

  • This paper simulates an environment similar to the operational environment of intelligent remote control smart landmines on the battlefield and describes a method for configuring a wireless personal area network in which the control unit(Master node) wirelessly controls smart landmines(Slave nodes) and manages the separation of slave nodes from the master node. We propose a study on a method of grouping by direction using the characteristics of directional antennas without a location tracking device(e.g., GPS). The short-distance wireless network communication environment, within a maximum range of 100 meters, is designed based on the IEEE 802.15.4e standard. The signal strength of the slave nodes is collected using the directional antennas attached to the master node, and the signal strength is measured by direction(0 degrees, 90 degrees, 180 degrees, 270 degrees). The process of specifying and controlling groups by direction is described. The effects of the proposed research show improvements such as reducing the production cost of smart landmines(slave nodes) with one-time use characteristics and simplifying the overall system.

Developing Smartphone-based Control Service of Vehicle's Convenience Features using CAN (CAN을 활용한 스마트폰 기반 차량 편의장치 제어 서비스 개발)

  • Multiple convenience features have been getting installed in recently released cars. However, the control of them has many uncomfortable matters yet. To resolve them, it is needed to study how to use easier the convenience features and control them remotely. Currently, wide range of convergence services are being released in various industries by using smartphone and smartphones with its state-of-the-art functions also are being released. In this paper, we design and implement smartphone-based applications for controling the vehicle's convenience features to control the vehicle convenience features with smartphone. To do this, we configure CAN (Controller Area Network) communication between the vehicle's various convenience features, and establish MCU (Micro Controller Unit) to control each feature. We also connect between the MCU and smartphones to make them available for the remote control. We can control lights, turn signals, audio, windows, air conditioner, and so on with the implemented smartphone-based control service of vehicle's convenience features using CAN remotely.

A Research on Shifting Controller Development of a Automatic Transmission far Construction Vehicles (건설차량용 자동변속기의 변속제어기 개발연구)

  • In this research, a transmission control unit was developed for a wheel loader on the basis of 16-bit microcontroller system. The TCU has the basic functions which include shifting control algorithm, actuation of six proportional solenoid valves, signal conditioning for four speed sensors, remote data monitoring capability with RF-module and duty cycle identification system which could identify the duty cycles from PWM signals. In order to design the control system, the overall transmission structure of the wheel loader was investigated and its characteristics of shifting were analyzed in advance. For the purpose of identifying the existing control algorithm and acquire some information about the shifting performance, the shifting experiments were performed for various shifting conditions with the conventional TCU. From the previous work on the conventional TCU, the shifting scheme was designed with the open-loop control which is based on the experimental data only to verify the feasibility of the developing TCU's shilling capability. The experimental results show comparable shifting characteristics to that of conventional TCU though the tests were performed at restricted shilling conditions. Hence, we could have the confidence for the development of the wheel loader automatic transmission TCU and its shifting quality could be improved with the adoption of appropriate feedback control scheme.

  • The X-ray unit developed by this study is to diagnose emergency cases which is too far from a hospital and to classify the patients. We have to use the X-ray in a ambulance or the scene of an accident where we cannot use the AC220 outlet because of the distance from a hospital as well. The X-ray unit developed has a characteristics as follows. First of all, as the unit has a condenser in itself where there is no electric supply, we can use the X-ray inspector in a mountain area or a island. Second, we can detect by digital detector the information taken by X-ray from DC 12[V] electricity and store as a form of file. A control circuit can secure the reliability of the X-ray unit by using the Pic16F84A X-ray and provide various functions. The X-ray unit which suits remote emergency system can be efficiently used for the emergent cases who is too far from a doctor and a hospital or in the situation where it is difficult to diagnose, transcribe and treat simultaneously.

  • In order to successfully exploit underwater resources, the first step would be a marine environmental research and exploration on the seafloor. Traditionally one sets up a long-term underwater experimental unit on the seafloor and retrieves the unit later after a certain period time. Essential to these applications is the reliable teleoperation and telemetering of the unit. This study presents ultrasonic-wave remote control system and an underwater sound recognition algorithm that can identify the sound signal without the influence of disturbances due to underwater environmental changes. The proposed method provides a means suitable for units which require low power dissipation and long-time underwater operation. We demonstrate its ability of securing stability and fast sound recognition through experimental methods.

  • Various raw materials from which iron and steel are made are unloaded from ship and then piled up at the designated yard. The equipment that piles up the raw materials is called Stacker and these materials are then dipped out and sent to unit factories such as blast furnace and cokes using the equipment called Reclaimer. The Reclaimer has an actual size of 16 meter high and 50 meter long and runs back and forth over the rail of about 1.2 km, carrying the materials to each unit factory. Until now, in most cases, Stacker and Reclaimer are manually operated.   • The main purpose of the distribution automation system (DAS) is to achieve efficient operation of primary distribution systems by monitoring and control of the feeder remote terminal unit(FRTU) deployed on the distribution feeders. DAS simulators are introduced to verify the functions of the application software installed in the central control unit(CCU) of the DAS. Because each DAS is developed on the basis of its own specific data model, the power system data cannot be easily transferred from the DAS to the simulator or vice versa. This paper presents a common information model(CIM)-based DAS simulator to achieve interoperability between the simulator and the DASs developed by different vendors. The CIM-based data model conversion between Smart DMS (SDMS) and Total DAS (TDAS) has been performed to establish feasibility of the proposed scheme.
