Sorption/desorption Study was conducted to determine desorption-resistance hydrophobic organic compounds in natural soils with low organic carbon content. Sorption/desorption characteristics of chlorobenzene and phenanthrene for both PPI (Petro Processors, Inc. Superfund site) and BM (Bayou Manchac), soils were investigated. Desorption was biphasic including reversible and desorption-resistant compartments. The biphasic sorption parameters indicated the presence of appreciable size of desorption-resistant phase in these soils. A finite maximum capacity of desorption-resistant fraction (equation omitted) was observed after several desorption steps. The apparent organic carbon based Partition coefficient, K(equation omitted) was 10$^{4.92{\pm}0.27}$ for PPI soil and 10$^{4.92{\pm}0.27}$ for BM soil, respectively. The difference in K(equation omitted) was attributed to different characteristics in soil organic matter. The results suggest that desorption-resistance should be considered in remediation and risk assessments in natural soils and sediments.

A remediation technology consisting of biodegradation and a modified Fenton reaction was developed to degrade mixtures of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) at a former manufactured gas plant (MGP) site. The original Fenton reaction (i.e., $H_2O$$_2$ + Fe$^{2+}$) was modified to be biocompatible by using ferric ions and chelating agents such as catechol and gallic acid. The modified reaction was effective in degrading PAHs at near neutral pH and thus was compatible with biodegradation. By the combined treatment of the modified Fenton reaction and biodegradation, more than 98% of 2- or 3-ring hydrocarbons and between 70 and 85% of 4- or 5-ring compounds were degraded in the MGP soil, while maintaining its pH about 6.6.

A soil whose texture is silt loam was collected for the study from an area around a nuclear facility in Korea. The equilibrium sorption coefficient between Co$^{2+}$in water and the soil was 1.51/kg, on the other hand, that between Co$^{2+}$ in EDTA and the soil was 0.21/kg. The values calculated by the developed nonequilibrium sorption code corresponded to the experimental values better than those calculated by the existing equilibrium sorption code. When an EDTA solution was used as a solvent to decontaminate Co$^{2+}$ in the soil column, the relative Co$^{2+}$ concentrations of the effluent were higher at 2~10 pore volumes than those of the case using water. The soil in the column was decontaminated by 95.5% of the total amount of Co$^{2+}$ after being flushed with EDTA solution of 20 pore volumes.e volumes.

When an electrokinetic process is applied to a HOC-contaminated soil, hybrid types combined with soil flushing, chemical oxidation, and bioremediation are generally used. Especially when the electrokinetic process is combined with bioremediation, the hybrid technology can solve several limits of bioremediation such as low microbial mobility, low soil temperature, and shortage of nutrients in subsurface circumstance. Because microbial surface is charged negatively, the microorganism moves from cathode to anode under electrical field. In this study, mixed culture mainly-consisted by Pseudomonas sp. was applied to remediate pentadecane-contaminated kaolinite with particle size less than 300${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. This remediation system was named ‘electrokinetic bioaugmentation’ and consisted of model aquifer, electrode reservoirs, bioreactor, power supply, and pump. The mixed culture above 0.5 of optical density in bioreactor was supplied to two reservoirs and penetrated soil when the electric current was applied. To enhance the removal efficiency, the optimal medium composition, electric current, and voltage were investigated.

The applicability of in situ microbial filter or biobarrier technology for the remediation of soil and groundwater contaminated with chlorinated solvents was investigated. The efficiency and rates of reductive dechlorination of chlorinated solvents are known to be highly dependent on hydrogen concentration. In this study, the effect of electron donors on the reductive dechlorination of PCE was investigated using vermicompost (worm casting) and peat as permeable reactive barrier medium The effect of organic acids (lactate, butyrate and benzoate), yeast extract and vitamin $B_{l2}$ on the reductive dechlorination was investigated. Compared to the control (no electron donor added), addition of electron donors stimulated the dechlorinated rate. Among the electron donor treatments, lactate/benzoate amendment exhibited the highest dechlorination rate. Since vermicompost and peat are inexpensive and biodegradable and have high sorption capacity, they could be successfully used as biobarrier media, especially when electron donors (for example, lactate/benzoate) are added.d.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the stabilization of As and heavy metals in tailings from the Samkwang Au-Ag mine with $Ca(OH)_2$. In order to evaluate the stabilization ability of As and heavy metals in the tailings, column test was implemented with various conditions as 1) particle size of $Ca(OH)_2$, 2) mixing method and 3) flow rate of eluents during 60 days. The results showed that addition with 5% of $Ca(OH)_2$ in 1kg of the tailings had the most effective ability of stabilization up to 95%. In addition, stabilization ability of As and heavy metals in tailings was enhanced using a fine powder of $Ca(OH)_2$. Therefore, stabilization technology can be used as a remediation of As and heavy metals in mine wastes including tailings and a nearby soils from abandoned metal mines.

The purpose of this study is to see the effect of microbial population and dynamics of the indigeonous microorganisms on hydrocarbon contaminated areas. The microbial structures and activities to determine the microbial capabilities of the contaminated sites are very important for the remedial action technology selection. Throughout microbial studies on different conditions by ETS(Electron Transport System) and microbial activity analysis, it was found that aeration and water contents are the most important factors in this site remediation. According to test results, Burkholderia spp. was dominant species, and acclimation is also an important factor for the accerelated biodegradation.

Petroleum energy is the major source of the world energy market, and its massive usage, and the corresponding extreme environmental pollution, imposes a serious threat on the ecological cycles. By screening oil-contaminated soil, we isolated, identified, and characterized a novel strain that represents a considerable diesel-degrading potentiality; the Bacillus aryabhattai DA2 strain is registered in the NCBI with the accession number MG571630, and it possesses an efficient tributyrin-degrading capacity. The optimal condition for diesel degradation by DA2 strain was observed at pH between 7-8 and at the temperature of $30^{\circ}C$. The strain is resistant to salt as well as the antibiotics like ampicillin and streptomycin. These results indicate B. aryabhattai is one of the potential candidates for the remediation of the diesel-contaminated sites.
Classical methods which used for removal of heavy metals from contaminated water are adsorption, precipitation, coagulation, ion exchange resin, evaporation, and membrane processes. Microbial biosorption can be used for the removal of contaminated waters with pollutants such as heavy metals and dyes which are not easily biodegradable. Microbial biosorbents are inexpensive, eco friendly and more effective for the removal of toxic metals from aqueous solution. In this review, the bacterial and fungal abilities for heavy metals ions removal are emphasized. Environmental factors which affect biosorption process are also discussed. A detailed description for the most common isotherm and kinetic models are presented. This article reviews the achievements and the current status of bacterial and fungal biosorption technology for heavy metals removal and provides insights for further researches.
The containment building Kori Unit 1 may require sequential steps for full decommissioning. This study assumes that the containment building is to be used as an auxiliary building that handles nuclear power systems and materials during decommissioning before conversion into a greenfield. Through the derivation of guidelines and dose evaluation, it was confirmed whether the radiation workers were satisfied with the ALARA decision. The specific modeling of the external radiation exposure was performed based on the facility investigation procedures. The external radiation specific derived concentration guideline levels (DCGLs) for radiation workers in containment building were obtained using the RESRAD-BUILD code and were applied to the VISIPLAN 3D ALARA Planning Tool code to calculate the working dose and check worker safety. The derivation of site-specific and realistic DCGLs and dose evaluation via 3D modeling can contribute to the scenario development for the decommission and remediation of containment building.
