  • Gravitational interactions - mergers and fly-by encounters - between galaxies play a key role as the drivers of their evolution. Here we perform a cosmological N-body simulation using the tree-particle-mesh code GOTPM, and attempt to separate out the effects of mergers and fly-bys between dark matter halos. Once close pair halos are identified by the halo finding algorithm PSB, they are classified into mergers ($E_{12}$ < 0) and fly-by encounters ($E_{12}$ > 0) based on the total energy ($E_{12}$) between two halos. The fly-by and merger fractions as functions of redshift, halo masses, and ambient environments are calculated and the result shows the following.(1) Among Milky-way sized halos ($0.33-2.0{\times}10^{12}h^{-1}M{\odot}$), $5.37{\pm}0.03%$ have experienced major fly-bys and $7.98{\pm}0.04%$ have undergone major mergers since z ~ 1; (2) Among dwarf halos ($0.1-0.33{\times}10^{12}h^{-1}M{\odot}$), $6.42{\pm}0.02%$ went through major fly-bys and $9.51{\pm}0.03%$ experienced major mergers since z ~ 1; (3) Milky-way sized halos in the cluster environment experienced fly-bys (mergers) 4-11(1.5-1.7) times more frequently than those in the field since z ~ 1; and (4) Approaching z = 0, the fly-by fraction decreases sharply with the merger fraction remaining constant, implying that the empirical pair/merger fractions (that decrease from z ~ 1) are in fact driven by the fly-bys, not by the mergers themselves.

  • The objective of this paper is to report the result of an experimental program conducted on the strengthening of nonductile RC frames by using external mesh reinforcement and plaster application. The main objective was to test an alternative strengthening technique for reinforced concrete buildings, which could be applied with minimum disturbance to the occupants. Generic specimen is two floors and one bay RC frame in 1/2 scales. The basic aim of tested strengthening techniques is to upgrade strength, ductility and stiffness of the member and/or the structural system. Six specimens, two of which were reference specimens and the remaining four of which had deficient steel detailing and poor concrete quality were strengthened and tested in an experimental program under cyclic loading. The parameters of the experimental study are mesh reinforcement ratio and plaster thickness of the infilled wall. The effects of the mesh reinforced plaster application for strengthening on behavior, strength, stiffness, failure mode and ductility of the specimens were investigated. Premature and unexpected failure mode has been observed at first and second specimens failed due to inadequate plaster thickness. Also third strengthened specimen failed due to inadequate lap splice of the external mesh reinforcement. The last modified specimen behaved satisfactorily with higher ultimate load carrying capacity. Externally reinforced infill wall composites improve seismic behavior by increasing lateral strength, lateral stiffness, and energy dissipation capacity of reinforced concrete buildings, and limit both structural and nonstructural damages caused by earthquakes.

  • This paper proposes a real-time simulation technique for thin shells undergoing large deformation. Shells are thin objects such as leaves and papers that can be abstracted as 2D structures. Development of a satisfactory physical model that runs in real-time but produces visually convincing animation of thin shells has been remaining a challenge in computer graphics. Rather than resorting to shell theory which involves the most complex formulations in continuum mechanics, we adopt the energy functions from the discrete shells proposed by Grinspun et al. For real-time integration of the governing equation, we develop a modal warping technique for shells. This new simulation framework results from making extensions to the original modal warping technique which was developed for the simulation of 3D solids. We report experimental results, which show that the proposed method runs in real-time even for large meshes, and that it can simulate large bending and/or twisting deformations with acceptable realism.

  • The LEACH is a study method of a clustering base that was representative in many routing techniques that was suggested in sensor network environment. This is suggested technique to manage the sensor network group which consisted of many sensors in efficiency. However, it does not consider energy remaining quantity of the cluster header to manage cluster group, the problem where the cluster group is able to destroyed on the middle which transmits data. We are going to propose to solve such a problem by this paper for new clustering technique to accomplish management for a cluster group. It uses the technique which it proposes from the dissertation which it sees and are to the data transfer and the control also the connection directivity of the cluster group to improve also the lag time diminishes, test result it will lead and the possibility which it will know it was.

  • The stability of omeprazole in the aqueous solutions containing arginine or sodium phosphate dibasic(SPD) was examined at 30, 40 and $50^{\circ}C$. Arginine or anhydrous SPD was added to omeprazoie solution ($200{\mu}g/\;ml$ in distilled water) to yield $100{\mu}g/\;ml$ concentration of each. Then, the solution was kept at 30, 40 or $50^{\circ}C$ for 90 hrs. Aliquots of the solution were withdrawn at specified time intervals and assayed by HPLC for intact omeprazole. The remaining percentage-time curves revealed that omeprazole was degraded rapidly as funtions of time and temperature following pseudo first-order kinetics. The rate constant in the SPD solution was much higher than in the arginine solution. In other words. the degradation half-lives of omeprazole at $30^{\circ}C$, for example, was 148 and 76 hr in arginine and SPD solutions respectively. The initial pH of the solution containing $100{\mu}g/\;ml$ of arginine or SPD was 9.7 or 8.7, respectively. Since omeprazole is more stable as the pH of its solution becomes more alkaline, the longer half-life of omeprazole in arginine solution could be explained by the more alkaline characteristics of arginine than SPD in the solution. The activation energy necessary for the degradation reaction was almost identical in both solutions, indicating similar degradation mechanisms of omeprazole in the solutions. In conclusion, omprazole was more stable in the presence of arginine than of SPD.

  • Reduction of Electric Arc Furnace dust with carbon (graphite) was studied at the temperature range of $800^{\circ}C$ to $1100^{\circ}C$ in Ar gas atmosphere. The briquetted dust with graphite powder was heated in a vertical tube furnace for given reaction time and Quenched in Ar gas atmosphere. It was found that initially the reduction of Zn was chemically controlled and the activation energy was about 120 KJ/mole. Because the almost all of Pb was removed with Cl in the form of $PbCl_2$, it is considered that Pb is removed by chloride reduction. Cu was vaporized as a chloride up to 30% of its original content, but the remaining of Cu would be accumulated with the reduced iron. and also, Cd was removed completely within 15 min. at $1000^{\circ}C$.

  • Remote Sensing data with ancillary ground-based meteorological data provides the capalility of computing threeof the four surface energy balance components(i.e. net radiation, soil heat flux and sensible heat flux) at different spatial and temporal scales. As a result, this enablis the estimation of the remaining term, latent heat flux. One of the practical applications with this approach is to produce evapotranspiration maps over large areas. This results could estimate and reproduce areal evapotranspiration over large area as much as several hundred sequare kilometers. Moreover, some calculating simulations for the effects of the land use change on the surface heat flux has been made by this method, which is able to estimate evapotranspiration under arbitracy presumed condition. From the simulation of land use change, the results suggests that the land use change in study area can be produce the significant changes in surface heat flux. This preliminary research suggests that the future research should involve development of methods to account for the variability of meteorological parameters brought about by changes in surface conditions and improvements in the modeling of sensible heat transfer across the surface atmosphere interface for partical canopy conditions using remote sensing information.

  • Acetoin is generated by numerous microorganisms using ${\alpha}$-acetolactate decarboxylase (ALDC) to prevent overacidification of cells and their environment and to store remaining energy. Because acetoin has been used as a safe flavor enhancer in food products, industries have been interested in biotechnological production of acetoin using ALDC. ALDC is a metal-dependent enzyme that produces acetoin from ${\alpha}$-acetolactate through decarboxylation reaction. Here, we report the crystal structure of ALDC from Bacillus subtilis subspecies spizizenii (bssALDC) at $1.7{\AA}$ resolution. bssALDC folds into a two-domain ${\alpha}/{\beta}$ structure where two ${\beta}$-sheets form a central core. bssALDC assembles into a dimer through central hydrophobic interactions and peripheral hydrophilic interactions. bssALDC coordinates a zinc ion using three histidine residues and three water molecules. Based on comparative analyses of ALDC structures and sequences, we propose that the active site of bssALDC includes the zinc ion and its neighboring bssALDC residues.

  • Hemp is known as one of the most productive and useful plants, which grows quickly in a moderate climate with only moderate water and fertilizer. Traditionally in Korea, hemp bast is used to natural fibres, and remaining such as stem and root is treated as waste. Those of hemp by-products can be transformed to bio fuel such as bio-oil and activated carbon. To understand pyrolysis characteristics, thermogravimetric analysis were carried out in TGA, in which hemp by-products were mostly decomposed at the temperature range of $270{\sim}370^{\circ}C$. The corresponding kinetic parameters including activation energy and pre-exponential factor were determined by differential method over the degree of conversions. The values of activation energies for pyrolysis were increased as the conversion increased from 10 to 90%.

  • Recently the growth of the renewable energy production has caused the flexible operation in LNG combined cycle power plant. Due to the rapid start and stop operations, large CrMoV castings used for turbine casings and valve bodies could be distorted and lead to replacement or welding repair. This study was performed to find out the characteristics of the repair welding for a damaged CrMoV casting steel. A typical field repair method (arc & TIG welding) was applied to making specimens. The degraded N2 packing head sample from the steam turbine was used. The evaluations of weldments were carried out in terms of microstructural characterization, microhardness measurements, tensile, creep-rupture and fatigue tests. Color etching was also applied for better understanding of welding microstructures. As the boundary between HAZ and base material was deteriorated by welding, it caused microstructural changes formed during PWHT and the shortening of the remaining residual life. By comparing the properties according to repair welding method, it was possible to derive what important welding factors were. As a result, arc welding method is more suitable for repair welding on CrMoV castings.
