Red Algae Pulp and Its Use in Papermaking

  • Red algae were used to make bleached pulp, from which paper handsheet samples were made. Red algae consists of rhizoidal filaments, epidermal tissues whose color were reddish, mucous carbohydrates, and other minor elements. Rhizoidal filaments of high brightness were obtained after extracting out mucous carbohydrates, and bleaching the remainder by using bleaching chemicals. The sizes and shapes of several rhizoidal filaments (or red algae pulp) from different red algae species were examined, and their handsheet properties were compared. Transparent and transluscent high density paper samples were made without applying refining process from the red algae pulp. White paper samples with good printability and excellent formation were made. We are developing pilot scale pulping and papermaking facilities at this time.

  • The reactive and harmonic current components of dc loads can be compensated by the three-phase hybrid power filter (HPF) system. After compensation, the resulting current has sinusoidal and in-phase components with the source voltage. The HPF system is constructed by an active filter and passive filters. The passive filter reduce the 5th and 7th harmonic of the load current. The active filter compensates the remainder of the load current. Using the HPF system, a low cost harmonic compensator can be made. Performance of the HPF system is verified through simulation,

An Overview of Phytoremediation Technology and Its Applications to Environmental Pollution Control (식물정화기술의 개요와 환경오염 제어에의 응용 현황)

  • Phytoremediation-the use of plants for the in situ treatment of contaminated soil and water-has recently emerged as an inexpensive and user-friendly alternative to traditional methods of environmental clean-up. The present article outlines the characteristics of phytoremediation based on accumulated research evidence, along with discussions on its advantages and disadvantages. It further reviews various mechanisms involved in the phytoremediation processes: phytoextraction, rhizofiltration, phytostabilization, phytovolatilization and phytodegradation. Along the way, the author summarizes examples of its applications to environmental pollution control. These include wastewater treatment, removal of heavy metals, and hydrocarbons, remediation of recalcitrant contaminants, phytoremediation of radionuclides, and application of transgenic plants for enhanced biodegradation and phytoremediation. The remainder of the article briefly concludes with directions for future research.

  • A 5-year old female shih-tzu referred to the veterinary Teaching Hospital, College of Veterinary Medicine, Konkuk University. The patient was presented with a mass of ventral to pubic region and intraperineal region. CBC, chemistry, x-ray, fine needle aspiration, biopsy and MRI was performed. The dog was definitively diagnosed as lipoma based on cytologic and histopathologic examination. In order to remove the mass, an approach with two direction was made. First, intraperineal region was removed about 40%, and then ventral to pubic was removed the remainder. And inserted penrose drain for obliterate dead space to prevent the accumulation of serous discharge. The dog is clinically normal and being monitored for development of any abnormal signs for the time being. In this case, diagnostic MRI was very useful procedure. it revealed accurate location of a lipoma and useful manner for decision of surgical approach to remove.

  • Ten calves were subjected to general anesthesia with ten percent chlooral hydrate solution. The drug was administered by the method of slow intravenous injection so as to have a better control over the dosage and time until deep anesthesia was attained. Although one of ten calves failed to produce anesthesia, the remainder of nine responded satisfactorily with deep anesthesia. The dosage required averaged as great as 17.5gm per calf, and the time 23 minutes. In view of these advantages indicated in the results, further studies on the use of intravenous chloral hydrate for deep anesthesia in bovine species are to be justifiable.

  • The drinking manners of the modern generaton were reviewed based on historical records. First, for reasons of health, we should reject the drinking from the same cup as others in reciprocation. Second, if the other people are older or younger brothers above the same level, pouring with one hand is all right, but if 5 years older or more, or stranger, grasp the bottle in two hands in the following manner. With the right hand under the bottle, and the left hand supporting its side, carefully pour wine not to show the palm of the hand. Third, ladies, also, can drink freely at the same table, but if people of the opposite sex are sitting together, they should pour with two hands to convey the meaning of courteous treatment. Fourth, because the level of our living is not two high, we must not order more them we can use, so that when we are finished, there will be no remainder.

Hemocyte Changes after the Extirpation of the Hemopoietic Organ-wing Disc Complexes in the Silkworm, Bombyx mori (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae)

  • We successfully extirpated all four hemopoietic organ-wing disc complexes of the fifth instar larvae of Bombyx mori, and found that most of the treated silkworms could still develop into the moths. We investigated the changes of the circulating hemocytes and evaluated the effects of extirpation on the hemopoiesis. The results showed that proliferation of circulating hemocytes was sufficient to allow development of the silkworms which complexes were totally extirpated. We also found that hemopoietic organ-wing disc complexes extirpation might cause a certain hemopoietic compensation of the remainder complexes during early spinning. Exogenous hormones such as $20-{\beta}-hydroxyecdysone$ and juvenile hormone analog had a positive effect on hemocytes proliferation.

Characteristics of Salmonella spp isolated from poultry carcasses (닭 도체에서 분리한 Salmonella spp의 특성 분석)

  • Salmonella infections cause the diseases in poultry and some zoonotic Salmonella can be transmitted to human through poultry products, resulting in food-borne disease. This study was conducted to obtain some useful information for the control of salmonellosis in human. Twenty four Salmonella spp were isolated from poultry carcasses, and they were examined with several methods such as serotyping, antimicrobial resistance test and random amplified polymorphic DNA(RAPD) to identify their characteristics. In serotyping test of 24 strains S enteritidis was 17 (70.8%), followed by S schwarzengrund 3 (12.5%), untyped strain 4 (16.7%). In the results of antimicrobial resistance test, 23 (95.8%) isolates were resistant to at least one antimicrobial agent, generating eight different resistance patterns. In RAPD analysis using URP-6 primer to differentiate Salmonella isolates within a serotype, 4 serogroups were divided into 10 RAPD types: 5 types in S enteritidis, 2 types in S schwarzengrund and 3 types in the remainder.

CRT-Based Color Image Zero-Watermarking on the DCT Domain

  • When host images are watermarked with CRT (Chinese Remainder Theorem), the watermark images are still robust in spite of the damage of the host images by maintaining the remainders in an unchanged state within some range of the changes that are incurred by the attacks. This advantage can also be attained by "zero-watermarking," which does not change the host images in any way. This paper proposes an improved zero-watermarking scheme for color images on the DCT (Discrete Cosine Transform) domain that is based on the CRT. In the scheme, RGB images are converted into YCbCr images, and one channel is used for the DCT transformation. A key is then computed from the DC and three low-frequency AC values of each DCT block using the CRT. The key finally becomes the watermark key after it is combined four times with a scrambled watermark image. When watermark images are extracted, each bit is determined by majority voting. This scheme shows that watermark images are robust against a number of common attacks such as sharpening, blurring, JPEG lossy compression, and cropping.

Changes in Quality of Sausage Processed with Shrink Discharge during Process of Smoke Meat Products (훈제품 제조시 유출되는 Shrink를 이용하여 제조한 소시지의 품질 변화)

  • This study was carried out to use the shrink discharged during process of smoke meat products. Qualities of sausage were grasped, and investigated storage properties during five weeks. The gel strength of pork sausage were 1,461~1,847g.cm, this of chicken sausage were 865~1,733g.cm. The cooking yield of sausage were 81~ 85% in general, contents of salt were 2.5~2.9%. The L value(lightness) of pork sausage were 44.8~47.2, those of chicken sausage were 43.1~48.0, and the L value of the interior was higher than the surface. The remainder contents of nitrite were 3.1~9.4ppm, the sorbic acid contents of all sausage were 0.8g/kg. The amino acid contents of chicken sausage were higher than those of pork sausage. The pH of sausage not changed uniformly during storage. The TBA value and the VBN contents were a slight tendency to increase during storage. The total plate counts of all sausage maintained 104 less than during storage.
