  • Since interior permanent magnet synchronous motor(IPMSM) has a structure whose magnet is inserted in the rotor, d, q inductances are differ from each other and the motor produces hybrid torque combined allignment term and reluctance term. But, for their complex magnetic path, it is difficult to analyze this type motors by equivalent magnetic circuit method. So, in this paper, the variation of parameters of IPMSM according to the magnet thickness accuired by using the result from finite element method is presented for the sake of effective design process.

  • The switched reluctance motor(SRM) has a simple structure with a doubly-salient and is studied as a variable speed motor since it has a good performance in a wide range of speed and torque. This paper presents the control scheme in which ON/OFF angles are controlled by PI controller that compensates the error between the command and real speeds, and the speed response is improved by braking operation in motor decelerating.

  • The single phase switched reluctance motor(SRM) is more simpler and robust in the structure than poly phase SRM. It has the merits that it reduces the switching elements and the energy density per volume is very high. Recently, it has been researched and developed in various types and starting method due to the technique of power electronics and the computer added design. The single phase SRM is tried to apply to many industrial appliance field to substitutethe the induction motor by the single phase SRM. On the previous studies, we decided the design parameters of the single phase SRM for the blower driver to adapt the design method of the conventional machine and the poly phase SRM. In this studies, it is proposed the conditions to decide the optimal pole arcs because the stator and rotor pole arcs is very important in the characteristics of the single phase SRM. For this reason, it is analysed the characteristics of current on/off angle vs. pole arc, pole arcs vs. average torque.

  • This paper proposes a simple actuator with a spherical rotor for robot's eyeball, which has two degrees of freedom. It features that both permanent magnets and coils are equipped in a stator and the spherical rotor with steps on its surface is driven by reaction of Lorentz force acting on the fixed coils. Such a structure is helpful to design a simple actuator and particularly suitable for a spherical actuator. Based on the FEM analysis, design parameters such as the sizes of core and permanent magnet, the width of step, coil turns and maximum current, are determined so as to maximize the torque and rotating angle. For the experimental verification of the feasibility, a prototype is manufactured and its operating characteristicsareinvestigated.

  • Switched reluctance machine has much attention because of high efficiency, high power and DC series torque characteristics with a traction drive. But the motor has to have a regenerative mode when it is adopted in an electric vehicle. A current divergence during the regeneration makes difficulties in the control of SRM. This paper proposes a reference current limitation strategy for a stable regeneration based on simulations and experimental tests. The motor is operated with conventional current limit and switching angle control method in motoring mode. Simulations and experiments are executed to verify proposed method.

  • Optimization of geometry is one of the most important design process of the electrical motors. Tooth and yoke width are important variables that can maximize back emf and load torque among various design parameters. In this paper, in order to design the tooth and yoke width effectively, an equivalent magnetic circuit of one pole is constructed and an optimal value of tooth and yoke width resulting minimum reluctance are determined instead of a finite element analysis(FEA) that is time consuming.

  • In small-power applications, variable-speed motors having high efficiency and controllability become more dominant than brushed DC motors. BLDC motors with permanent magnets in the rotor and SRMs directed by reluctance torque due to no permanent magnets have been strongly studied as a candidate. Compared to the BLDC motors, SRMs are more suitable for low-cost applications since the magnetic structure is simple, mechanically robust, and cheap due to no additional excitation in the rotor such as copper wire, aluminum, and permanent magnets. In addition, relatively small number of phases in single and two-phase SRMs allows more cost savings with regards to material in the motor and switching devices in the converter. In this paper, several 2 phase SRMs are compared to a 3 phase 6/4 SRM in terms of flux distribution in key parts of the motors.

  • The switched reluctance drive is known to provide good adjustable speed characteristics with high efficiency. However, higher torque ripple and lack of the precise speed control are drawbacks. In the paper, a PLL(Phase Locked Loop) technique is adopted to regulate the dwell angle instantaneously. A PLL control technique in conjunction with dynamic dwell angle control scheme has good speed regulation characteristics. The F240 DSP based control system is used to realize this drive system. Test results show that the system has the ability to achieve good dynamic and precise speed control.

  • This paper present a inductance calculation method of Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) for torque characteristic analysis using analytical model. Recently, many approaches of inductance calculations are accomplished with Finite Element Analysis (FEM) and curve fitting method using complex nonlinear magnetic circuit model. It this paper, a simple method for inductance calculation is proposed based on the motor design parameters. The simulation result of the proposed method are compared with a FEM analysis for, and a good accuracy is obtained.
