  • Religious organizations execute various social welfare programs on the basis of their religious ideology and faith. Their practice vividly aim at mission, propagation, edification, and spreading, but also is practised as a way of philanthropy, an universal value. Daesoonjinrihoe's social welfare program can be understood in this respect. This paper investigates on which idea Daesoonjinrihoe's social welfare program takes its basis, and examines the current situation and tasks of the social welfare program. Daesoonjinrihoe runs their social welfare program on the idea of 'Resolution of grievances for the mutual beneficence of all life[Haewonsangsaeng: 解冤相生]' and 'Boeunsangsaeng(報恩相生)'. Their program is concentrated on medical welfare, welfare for elderly people, and youth welfare. It is noteworthy that Daesoonjinrihoe's welfare program is not subsidized by government as much as those of other religious organizations. This paper looks into the tasks for Daesoonjinrihoe's social welfare program in terms of operational system and hardware, and suggests that we need to show interest in multicultural welfare systems and support it as Korean society is becoming a more multicultural society.

  • This study analyzed the effect of the inclusion program executed in a social welfare institution for handicapped children of community in order to support inclusive education of elementary school. The statistical analyses adapted in this study were the Frequency Analysis, T-test, One-Way ANOVA, Correlation Analysis, Two-Way ANOVA, and ANCOVA. As the results of the analyses, there was significant difference of the increase in the scores between pre-test attitude and attitude improvement of normal children (nonhandicapped children) by intervention of the inclusion program. Secondly three variables such as the sex, the experience of integrated class, and the school environment gave influence on attitude improvement of normal children, but two variables such as the school year and the religion didn't give influence on attitude improvement of normal children. However, as the results of the ANCOVA, it was appeared that both the school year variable and the religion variable didn't give influence on attitude improvement of normal children. Consequently, as the attitude improvement of normal children was irrelevant to the characteristic variables such as the school year and the religion, it is verified that the inclusion program gives still significant impact in the difference between pre-test attitude and attitude improvement of normal children. In conclusion, As the pure effectiveness of the inclusion program executed in social welfare institutions for handicapped children in order to support inclusive education of elementary school was confirmed, it was suggested in this study that the inclusion program in the field of social work practice based community can be an important tool of social integration through inclusive education between handicapped children and normal children.

  • After diagnosis of cancer, many patients show more inclination towards religion and religious activities. This qualitative study using semi-structured interviews explored the perspectives and experiences of 17 Iranian cancer patients and their families regarding the role of religion in their adaptation to cancer in one of the hospitals in Tehran and a charity institute. The content analysis identified two themes: "religious beliefs" (illness as God's will, being cured by God's will, belief in God's supportiveness, having faith in God as a relieving factor, and hope in divine healing) and "relationship with God during the illness." In general, relationship with God and religious beliefs had a positive effect on the patients adapting to their condition, without negative consequences such as stopping their treatment process and just waiting to be cured by God. Thus a strengthening of such beliefs, as a coping factor, could be recommended through religious counseling.

Focusing on philanthropic effort (giving amount divided by family income), major findings are that (1) there is no significant relationship between religion types and citizens' philanthropic effort and (2) interaction between Protestants and religiosity and interaction between Catholics and religiosity have significant relationships with citizens'philanthropic effort in a positive direction. • This study assessed the manner in which social activities, religious experiences, and spiritual practices related to depression and life satisfaction among 217 Korean elderly individuals, aged 65 to 80. The Social Activities Scale and Brief Multidimensional Measure of Religiosity/Spirituality were employed to assess social activities and six domains of religiosity/spirituality: daily spiritual experiences, values, forgiveness, private religious practice, religious/spiritual coping, and religious support. In addition, depression was assessed with the Geriatric Depression Scale, and life satisfaction with the Satisfaction with Life Scale. After controlling for demographic variables, lower depression scores were predicted by higher levels of religious and spiritual coping, social activities, higher income, and ower daily spiritual experiences. In addition, identifying as female, advanced old age, and lower social activities predicted lower life satisfaction in this study. The implications of this study's findings on social work practice are also discussed, along with some future research directions.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors associated with social isolation in older adults using a senior welfare center. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional survey. Data was collected from June to August 2006 using a questionnaire. A total of 248 older adults responded. Results: About one third (34.9%) of participants responded they felt socially isolated. There were statistically significant differences in living, religion, family and belongingness social support, loneliness, depression, family function, perceived health status, and number of chronic illnesses between socially isolated and non isolated groups. However, factors influencing social isolation were family function (OR=0.954, CI=0.926-0.982), loneliness (OR=1.042, CI=1.002-1.083), depression (OR=1.041, CI=1.002-1.081), and number of chronic illness (OR=1.657, CI=1.153-2.382). Conclusion: We found that some older adults were feeling socially isolated even though the senior welfare center was a good place to meet people. The findings of this study indicated that older adults suffering from social isolation need special attention and may benefit from interventions which promote health and social interactions. Further studies are needed to develop and evaluate an intervention program for this population.

For the estimation of the total amount of social welfare resources, this research takes advantages of both the major methods of provider centered approach and the intermediary agent centered approach. Based on the compromised method estimation, the total amount of social welfare resources in Korea in the year of 2004 is 147 trillion won (approximately, 148 billion dollars and 19% of GDP). Among them, central and local governments provide 52 trillion won. The private sector expends a total of 109 trillion won, which contains 44 trillion from enterprise, 54.3 trillion from market, 3.0 trillion from the third sector, and 8.3 trillion from the community. The enterprise and market share of welfare resources exceeds 66% of the total expenditure, and the market is expected to increase gradually in the near future.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the actual conditions of successful ageing and the influencing factors focusing on social support from family and friends to improve elderly's quality of life. The 300 respondents, all participants in programs at facilities for the elderly, were interviewed via a questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 23.0. The results are as follows. First, the average score for successful ageing among the participants was above average. Second, the level of successful ageing varied according to income and religion. Third, the common variables affecting active or emotionally successful ageing were support from friends, subjective health conditions, and gender. It is suggested that the community should be informed of the importance of support from family through educational programs, as the elderly still want the support of family despite family's reduced role.
