  • The reliable multicast MAC (Medium Access Control) protocol is needed to guarantee the recipients' nonerroneous reception of the multicast data frames, which can be transmitted by the AP (Access Point) in infrastructure mode IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs. Enhancing the BMMM (Batch Mode Multicast MAC) protocol, in the literature, the connectivity-based reliable multicast MAC protocol was proposed to reduce the RAK (Request for ACKnowledgement) frame transmissions and enhance the multicast MAC performance. However, the number of necessary RAK frame transmissions increases as the number of multicast recipients increases. To alleviate the problem of the larger number of RAK frame transmissions with the larger number of multicast recipients, we propose the clustering algorithm for partitioning the recipients into a small number of clusters, so that the recipients are connected each other within the same clusters. Numerical examples are presented to show the reliable multicast MAC performance improvement by the clustering algorithm.

  • IP Multicast that provides best-efforts service does not guarantee reliable delivery of multicast packets. In recent years, there are many approaches to support reliable multicast, but those are insufficient for implementing scalable and reliable multicast over Internet. We propose a Reliable Multicast Architecture(RMA) for scalable and reliable multicast. The RMA model guarantees reliability using a receiver initiated retransmission mechanism, and scalability using a feedback suppression mechanism by Multicast Router(MR). Furthermore, it utilizes underlying multicast routing information to minimize the cost of protocol modification and overheads. Our performance analyses show that RMA is much superior to previous works in the point of scalability and compatibility.

  • Compared with unicast, multicast over wireless ad-hoc networks do not support reliability due to their inability to exchange request-to-send/clear-to-send (RTS/CTS) and ACK packets with multiple recipients. Although several media access control (MAC) layer protocols have been proposed to provide reliable multicast, these introduce additional overhead, which degrades system performance. A novel MAC protocol for reliable wireless multicast is proposed in this paper. By adapting orthogonal frequency division multiple access characteristics in CTS and ACK packets, the protocol achieves reliability over wireless multicast with minimized overhead.

  • Multicast data communication is an efficient communication scheme, especially inmulti-hop ad hoc networks where the media access control (MAC) layer is based on one-hop broadcast from one source to multiple receivers. Compared to unicast, multicast over a wireless channel should be able to deal with varying channel conditions of multiple users and user mobility to provide good quality to all users. IEEE 802.11 does not support reliable multicast owing to its inability to exchange request-to-send/clear-to-send and acknowledgement packets with multiple recipients. Thus, several MAC layer protocols have been proposed to provide reliable multicast. However, additional overhead is introduced, as a result, which degrades the system performance. In this paper, we propose an efficient wireless multicast MAC protocol with small control overhead required for reliable multicast in multi-hop wireless ad hoc networks. We present analytical formulations of the system throughput and delay associated with the overhead.

  • The connectivity-based reliable multicast MAC protocol was proposed for IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs and the formulae for the lower bounds of the multicast downlink throughput and the uplink throughput of the connectivity-based reliable multicast MAC protocol were derived in our previous study. We provide the tighter throughput lower bounds of the connectivity-based reliable multicast MAC protocol than the lower bounds presented in our previous study.

  • When using reliable multicast protocol over air links, the multicast packets lost in the air link cause the initiation of retransmission request packets and the implosion of retransmission packets, which deteriorate multicast session performance. This paper proposes on the efficient reliable multicast mechanism in wireless networks utilizing the Agents. In this paper we show the design of a retransmission agent which improves the performance of reliable multicast sessions in wireless network. The main idea is to cache reliable multicast packets at the base station and perform local retransmissions across the wireless link. MATLAB has been used to simulate and to get performance results for signaling overhead and processing delay through the comparison of the proposed agent model to the Multicast File Transfer Protocol. It has been proven from the simulation results that the proxy module make pass trials shorter in Multicast File Transfer Protocol.

  • Multicast protocols ore developed in order to support group communications efficiently, However. there still exist some issues to be solved for deploy multicast protocol in the public internet. This paper refers problem of existing Reliable Multicast Protocols and redesigns component function, and proposes enhanced reliable multicast transport protocol, This paper proposed a improved multicast transport scheme in NACK based reliable multicast. This scheme is much faster than by sender-initiated or receiver-initiated recovery and latency is smaller. Designed components are implemented in UNIX environment using C programming longuage. Then the protocol was evaluated performance through simulation. As the result, proposed protocol is better than existing protocols in both of transmission delay and packet loss. Especially, proposed protocol in this paper con be used in multicast services needed high reliability.

  • This paper presents a method to improve the performance of Scalable Multicast Protocol deployed in wired and wireless network by adding retransmission function on base stations. When using Scalable Multicast Protocol over wireless and wired networks, packet drops on the wireless link produce the initiation of retransmission request packets and the implosion of retransmission packets, which deteriorate the multicast session performance. The efficient reliable multicast mechanism in wireless networks utilizing the retransmission function on the base station is addressed in this paper. We explain the design of a retransmission function which improves the performance of Scalable Multicast Protocol sessions in wireless and wirednetwork. The main idea is to cache Scalable Multicast Protocol packets at the base station and perform local retransmissions across the wireless link. ARENA has been used to simulate and to get performance for reducing signaling overhead and processing delay through the comparison of the proposed function to the Scalable Multicast Protocol.

  • Reliable multicast data transmission in a 1:N environment needs more sophisticated error control mechanism than that of in 1:1 environment due to ACK implosion and duplicated retransmission. Although there have been many related research on error control in reliable multicast, real implemented protocols are rare. As one of the reliable multicast transport protocols, ECTP is selected as an international standard reliable multicast protocol by ITU-T and ISO and implemented on RedHat 7.2 machine by us. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of the error control mechanism in the respect of throughput and generated control packet numbers with a real implementation code. From the results, it is concluded that the suitable values of error control parameters can be obtained from the local group size and network environments.

  • This paper introduces reliable multicast MAC protocol for cooperative unmanned vehicles. cooperative unmanned vehicles communicate with infrastructure and other unmanned vehicles in order to increase driving safety. They exchange information related to driving and thus it requires real-time and reliable multicast. However, the international vehicular communication standard, IEEE 802.11p WAVE, does not provide a reliable multicast scheme on the MAC layer. To address the problems of reliability, we propose a reliable multicast protocol called WiVCL, which avoids contention and collision. Our evaluation shows that the WiVCL achieves a high degree of reliability and real-time features.
