A procedure of the design optimization for steel box girder bridges using micro genetic algorithms(μGA) is developed. The effect of population size is investigated and the efficiency and reliability of μGA is demonstrated in the optimum design of steel box girder bridges. Optimum design problems of steel box girder bridges are formulated, where tile design of concrete slab is based on the USD specifications and steel box girder based on LRFD respectively. Design of optimizations of single-span and 2-span steel box girder bridges are performed with the population size of 5, 40, 80, and 120, respectively The μGA-based optimum design of the 3-span steel box girder bridge is compared with SQP results.
In the deterministic optimization of a structural system, objective function, design constraints and design variables, are treated in a nonstatistical fashion. However, such deterministic engineering optimization tends to promote the structural system with lest reliability redundancy than obtained with conventional design procedures using the factor of safety. Consequently, deterministic optimized structures will usually have higher failure probabilities than unoptimized structures. Therefore, a balance must be developed between the satisfactions of the design requirements and the objectives of reducing manufacturing cost. This paper proposes the reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) technique, which enables the optimum design that considers confidence level for the vibration characteristics of structural system. Response surface method (RSM) is utilized to approximate the performance functions describing the system characteristics in the RBDO procedure. The proposed optimization technique is applied to the pillar section design considering natural frequencies of a vehicle structure.
In this study, an optimization design of reinforced concrete structures is performed by using the structural optimization techniques based on the LRFD criteria. The target reliability index is estimated by the optimal reliability index considering the expected cost which is taken as a sum of the structural cost and the expected costs due to failure of the structure. The load and resistance factors calculated by using level I reliability theory with the target reliability index are compared for each load combination (D+L, D+L+w). The results of this study show that the resistance factors are ${\phi}_{M}$=0.90, ${\phi}_{V}$==0.70, ${\phi}_{C}$==0.65 and the load factors are 1.20D + 1.70L, 1.07L + 0.07L + 1.10W. The optimization techinques used to this study are S.L.P. The optimization design based on the LRFD criteria is more economical and rational than other criteria.
In this study, the reliability-based design optimization of the airfoil was performed. PARSEC function was used to consider the uncertainty of the aerodynamic shape for the reliability-based shape optimization of airfoils. Among various reliability analysis methods, the moment method was used to compute the probability of failure of the aerodynamic performance. The accuracy of the reliability analysis was compared with other methods and it was found that the moment method predicts the probability of failure accurately. Deterministic and reliability-based optimizations were performed for the shape of the airfoil and it was demonstrated that reliability-based optimum assures the aerodynamic performances under uncertainties of the shape of the airfoil.

Tunnels are one of the most important constructions in civil engineering. The damage to these structures caused enormous costs. Therefore, the safe and economic design of these structures has long been considered. However, both applied loads on the tunnels as well as the resistance of the structural members are naturally uncertain parameters, hence, the design of these structures requires considering the probabilistic approaches. This study aims to determine the load and resistant factors of lining tunnels concerning the earthquake extreme events limit state function. For this purpose, tunnels that have been designed according to the previous design codes (AASHTO Tunnel LRFD 2017) and using reliability analysis, the optimum reliability of these structures for different loading scenarios is determined. In this paper, the tunnel is considered circular. Finally, the proper load and resistance factors are calculated corresponding to the obtained target reliability. Based on the performed calibration earthquake extreme events limit state function, the result of this study can be recommended to AASHTO Tunnel LRFD 2017.
An experimental design technique is developed for estimating the moments of system response functions. It is easy to implement and provides accurate results compared with other traditional methods. It is based on the work of Taguchi, later improved by D'Errico and Zaino. The existing experimental techniques, however, is applicable only for normally distributed cases. In this article the three-level Taguchi method is extended to obtain optimum choice for levels and weights to handle nonnormal distributions. A systematic procedure for reliability analysis is then proposed by using the Pearson system and the narrow system reliability bounds. Illustrative examples including a tolerance optimization problem are shown very accurate comparing with those by Monte-Carlo simulations and the first-order reliability method.
An optimum design algorithm using efficient reanalysis is proposed for reliability-based optimization problems formulated as the minimization of initial cost and expected failure cost with reliability constraints. The reliability-based optimization is high cost to evaluate objective function and constraints needed reliability analysis. Therefore the sensitivity analysis of reliability index for approximated reanalysis is necessary. In this paper, three solution approaches are suggested and tested. The approaches include : (1) sensitivity analysis using finite difference; (2) sensitivity analysis using automatic differentiation (AD); and (3) sensitivity analysis with respect to intermediate variables using AD. Numerical example is optimized to show the reliability and effectiveness of the new algorithm.
In this paper we propose a method for designing optimum degradation test based on nonlinear random-coefficients models. We use the approximated expression of the Fisher information matrix for nonlinear random-coefficients models. We apply the simplex algorithm to the inverse of the determinant of Fisher information matrix to satisfy the D-optimal criterion. By comparison of the results from PDP degradation data, we suggest a general guideline to obtain optimum experimental design for determining inspection intervals and number of samples in degradation testing.
A growing attention has been paid to the optimum design of structures in recent years. Most studies on the optimum design of reinforced concrete structures has been mainly focussed to the design of structural members such as beams, slabs and columns, and there exist few studies that deal with the optimum design of large-scale concrete shell structures. The purpose of the present investigation is, therefore, to set up an efficient optimum design method for the large-scale reinforced concrete cylindrical shell structures like intake tower of reservoir. The major design variables are the dimensions and steel areas of each member of structures. The construction cost which is compo8ed of the concrete, steel, and form work costs, respectively, is taken as the objective function. The constraint equations for the design of intake-tower are derived on the basis of strength design method. The results obtained are summarized as follows 1. The efficient optimlzation algorithrns which can execute the automatic optimum design of reinforced concrete intake tower based on the strength design method were developed. 2. Since the objective function and design variables were converged to their optimum values within the first or second iteration, the optimization algorithms developed in this study seem to be efficient and stable. 3. When using the strength design method, the construction cost could be saved about 9% compared with working stress design method. Therefore, the reliability of algorithm was proved. 4. The difference in construction cost between the optimum designs with substructures and with entire structure was found to be small and thus the optimum design with substructures may conveniently be used in practical design. 5. The major active constraints of each structural member were found to be the 'bending moment constraint for slab, the minimum longitudinal steel ratio constraint for tower body and the shearing force, bending moment and maximum eccentricity constraints for footing, respectively. 6. The computer program developed in the present study can be effectively used even by an uneiperienced designer for the optimum design of reinforced concrete intake-tower on the basis of strength design method.
The ultimate goal of structural design is to find the optimal design results which satisfies both safety and economy at the same time. Optimum design has been studied for the last several decades and is being studied. in this study, an optimum algorithm which is based on the genetic algorithm has been applied to the multi-object problem to obtain the optimum solutions which minimizes structural weight and construction cost of panel blocks in ship structures at the same time. Mathematical problems are dealt at first to justify the reliability of the present optimum algorithm. And then the present method has been applied to the panel block model which can be found in ship structures. From the present findings it has been seen that the present optimum algorithm can reasonably give the optimum design results.
