  • To improve the effectiveness and economics the bridge design methodology considering the bridge/rail longitudinal analysis and bridge/vehicle dynamic effect suggested in this study. The reliability-based Life-Cycle Costs(LCC) effective optimum design is applied to a 2-main steel girder bridge, 5$\times$(1@50m) for comparison with conventional design, initial cost optimization and equivalent LCC optimization. As a result of the optimum design based on reliability, it may be stated that the design of High-Speed railway bridges considering the bridge/rail longitudinal analysis and bridge/vehicle dynamic effect are more efficient than typical existing bridges and LCC optimization without respect to bridge/rail longitudinal analysis and bridge/vehicle dynamic effect. The result of optimization design considering the interaction, design methodology suggested in this study, is higher than result of initial cost optimization design in initial cost, but that has the advantage than result of initial cost optimization design in expected LCC.

  • Tunnels are one of the most important constructions in civil engineering. The damage to these structures caused enormous costs. Therefore, the safe and economic design of these structures has long been considered. However, both applied loads on the tunnels as well as the resistance of the structural members are naturally uncertain parameters, hence, the design of these structures requires considering the probabilistic approaches. This study aims to determine the load and resistant factors of lining tunnels concerning the earthquake extreme events limit state function. For this purpose, tunnels that have been designed according to the previous design codes (AASHTO Tunnel LRFD 2017) and using reliability analysis, the optimum reliability of these structures for different loading scenarios is determined. In this paper, the tunnel is considered circular. Finally, the proper load and resistance factors are calculated corresponding to the obtained target reliability. Based on the performed calibration earthquake extreme events limit state function, the result of this study can be recommended to AASHTO Tunnel LRFD 2017.

  • Slopes stabilised with piles are seldom analysed considering uncertainties in the parameters of the pile-slope system. Reliability analysis of the pile-slope system quantifies the degree of uncertainties and evaluates the safety of the system. In the present study, the reliability analysis of a slope stabilised with piles is performed using the first-order reliability method (FORM) based on Hasofer-Lind approach. The implicit performance function associated with the factor of safety (FS) of the slope is approximated using the response surface method. The analyses are carried out considering the design matrices formulated based on both the 2k factorial design augmented with a centre run (2k fact-centred design) and face-centered cube design (FCD). The finite element method is used as the deterministic model to compute the FS of the pile-slope system. Results are compared with the results of the Monte Carlo simulation. It is observed that the optimum location of the row of piles is at the middle of the slope to achieve the maximum FS. The results show that the reliability of the system is not uniform for different pile configurations, even if the system deterministically satisfies the target factor of safety (FSt) criterion. The FSt should be selected judiciously as it is observed that the reliability of the system changes drastically with the FSt level. The results of the 2k fact-centred design and FCD are in good agreement with each other. The procedure of the FCD is computationally costly and hence the use of 2k fact-centred design is recommended, provided the response of the system is sufficiently linear over the factorial space.

  • In this research, reliability based optimum design is presented for the thin walled beam structures. Deterministic and stochastic optimum design are compared for the thin walled beam structures. Monte Carlo simulation is used for stochastic optimum design with consideration of probabilistic distribution of representative section properties of the thin walled beams with the Response Surface Method.

  • The current paper presents an effective methodology for assessing the reliability of electromagnetic designs when considering uncertainties of design variables. To achieve this goal, the reliability index approach based on the first-order reliability method is adopted to deal with probabilistic constraint functions, which are expressed in terms of random design variables. The proposed method is applied to three different designs of a superconducting magnetic energy storage system that corresponds to initial, deterministic, and roust designs. The validity and efficiency of the method is investigated with reference values obtained from Monte Carlo simulation.

  • Purpose: In this study, A reliability assurance model (or reliability program) is proposed to evaluate the reliability of an armed vehicle. The reliability assurance is performed through the reliability-centered activities during its life cycle of development/design, production, deployment, maintenance, and disposal. Methods: By reflecting the current situations of korea defense industry, a reliability assurance model is built up based on the benchmarking results of world leading companies' best practices in same fields. Results: The proposed reliability program of armed vehicles, which is based on the reliability program of ANSI/GEIA-STD 0009, uses DMAIC process of the six sigma methodology from design phase to testing and evaluation phase. Conclusion: This research is supposed to develop reliability program of armed vehicles by integrating DFSS, DFR and reliability growth process.

  • During the design phase of a system, which requires high reliability and safety such as aircraft, high speed train and nuclear power plant, reliability engineer must set up the target system reliability. To meet a reliability goal for the system, reliability allocation should be done gradually from the system to its element. For this end, first of all, we need to construct functional block diagram based on the design output and PWBS(Project Work Breakdown System). Another important input data for reliability allocation is the relationship between the cost and the reliability. In this study we investigate various reliability allocation models, which can be applicable to aircraft, vehicle, and power plant, and etc. And we suggest a proper reliability allocation model which can be effectively applicable to KTX-II high speed train to achieve the target system reliability.

  • Most engineered systems are designed with high levels of system redundancies to satisfy required reliability requirements under adverse events, resulting in high systems' LCCs (Life-Cycle Costs). Recent years have seen a surge of interest and tremendous advance in PHM (Prognostics and Health Management) methods that detect, diagnose, and predict the effects of adverse events. The PHM methods enable proactive maintenance decisions, giving rise to adaptive reliability. In this paper, we present a RAP (Resilience Allocation Problem) whose goal is to allocate reliability and PHM efficiency to components in an engineering context. The optimally allocated reliability and PHM efficiency levels serve as the design specifications for the system RBDO (Reliability-Based Design Optimization) and the system PHM design, which can be used to derive the detailed design of components and PHM units. The RAP is demonstrated using a simplified aircraft control actuator design problem resulting in a highly resilient actuator with optimally allocated reliability, PHM efficiency and redundancy for the given parameter settings.

  • Composite sandwich structure can improve the specific bending stiffness significantly and save the weight nearly 30 percent compared with the composite laminates. However, it has more inherent uncertainties of the material property caused by manufacturing process than metals. Therefore, the reliability-based probabilistic design approach is required. In this paper, the PMS(Probabilistic Margin of Safety) is calculated for the simplified fuselage structure made of composite sandwich to provide the probabilistic reasonable evidence that the classical design method based on the safety factor cannot ensure the structural safety. In this phase, the probability density function estimated by CMCS(Crude Monte-Carlo Simulation) is used. Furthermore, the RBDO(Reliability-Based Design Optimization) under the probabilistic constraint are performed, and the RBDO-MPDF(RBDO by Moving Probability Density Function) is proposed for an efficient computation. The examined results in this paper can be helpful for advanced design techniques to ensure the reliability of structures under the uncertainty and computationally inexpensive RBDO methods.

  • The design method of the reinforced concrete structures is converting from the current limit state design method to the reliability based design method and active studies have been done in the US, Europe, and Japan etc. Performance based design method is considering lots of uncertainty of current design provision rationally and make sure that structure have a reliable reliability and safety. The main area of these studies is to secure the non-linear analysis technology with high reliability. The data for reinforced concrete columns tested by many researchers are used to verify the applicability of the nonlinear finite element analysis program (RCAHEST, Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology). A comparison is made between analysis and test, calculated safety factor based on reliability theories to applies to analysis result.
