  • This work aims to develop modeling methodology of machine part reliability. The reliability model is to be used for predicting and improving reliability in planning and design processes of products. In order to develop the reliability model of machine parts, the functions and interactions of sub-units of machine parts are analyzed first and function network is constructed. Using the function network, function block diagram is developed, which can be the basis for deriving reliability block diagram. Modeling of machine part reliability has not been widely studied since the reliability modeling of machine parts requires understanding of the functions and failures of their components in several viewpoints. This work tries to find general methodology of reliability modeling and proposes a framework for reliability improvement during machine part development.

  • This paper is to suggest reliability modeling and analysis method of Electric Multiple Unit (EMU). It is necessary to identify subsystem/equipments of EMU and functional interfaces between subsystems in order to carry out reliability modeling of EMU properly. After identifying subsystem/equipments and functional interface, reliability allocation is performed using ARINC method. Reliability target of system/subsystems is verified in revenue service during the proper periods.

  • Reliability growth testing used to evaluate reliability in the automobile industry have not always been able to correctly address reliability concerns with increased confidence. The demand to confirm to all product performance requirements under various operating environments has added to the complexity of accurately assessin theproduct's reliability in the required development time. In addition, it is often desired to determine the relationship of a product's reliability to cost, development time, design, manufacturability and assembly. This paper presents the methods for reliability growth modeling to evaluate and interpret reliability concerns to support the reliability analysis of automobile assemblies and systems. This reliability growth modeling process is a mechanism to help "build in" reliability during early phases in the vehicle devleopment stage.

  • The growing complexity of modern technological systems requires more flexible and powerful reliability analysis tools. Existing tools encounter a number of limitations including lack of modeling power to address components interactions for complex systems and lack of flexibility in handling component failure distribution. We propose a reliability modeling framework based on the Bayesian network (BN). It can combine historical data with expert judgment to treat data scarcity. The proposed methodology is applied to wind turbines reliability analysis. The observed result shows that a BN based reliability modeling is a powerful potential solution to modeling and analyzing various kinds of system components behaviors and interactions. Moreover, BN provides performing several inference approaches such as smoothing, filtering, what-if analysis, and sensitivity analysis for considering system.

  • This paper proposes a methodology for creating a function based reliability prediction model. Although, there are various works for reliability prediction, one of the features of their research is that the research is based on hardware-centered reliability prediction. Reliability is often defined as the probability that a device will perform its intended function, under operating condition, for a specified period of time, there is a profound irony about reliability prediction problem. In this paper, we proposed four-phase modeling procedure for function-centered reliability prediction. The proposed modeling procedure consists of four models; 1) structure block model, 2) function block model, 3) device model, and 4) reliability prediction model. We performed function-centered reliability prediction for electronic ballast using the proposed modeling procedure and MIL-HDBK-217F which is the military handbook for reliability prediction of electronic equipment.

  • Conventional static reliability analysis methods are inadequate for modeling dynamic interactions between components of a system. Various techniques such as dynamic fault tree, dynamic Bayesian networks, and dynamic reliability block diagrams have been proposed for modeling dynamic systems based on improvement of the conventional modeling methods. In this paper, we review these methods briefly and introduce dynamic nodes to the existing reliability graph with general gates (RGGG) as an intuitive modeling method to model dynamic systems. For a quantitative analysis, we use a discrete-time method to convert an RGGG to an equivalent Bayesian network and develop a software tool for generation of probability tables.

  • The safety of nuclear power plants is analyzed by a probabilistic risk assessment, and the fault tree analysis is the most widely used method for a risk assessment with the event tree analysis. One of the well-known disadvantages of the fault tree is that drawing a fault tree for a complex system is a very cumbersome task. Thus, several graphical modeling methods have been proposed for the convenient and intuitive modeling of complex systems. In this paper, the reliability graph with general gates (RGGG) method, one of the intuitive graphical modeling methods based on Bayesian networks, is improved for the reliability analyses of dynamic systems that have various operation modes with time. A reliability matrix is proposed and it is explained how to utilize the reliability matrix in the RGGG for various cases of operation mode changes. The proposed RGGG with a reliability matrix provides a convenient and intuitive modeling of various operation modes of complex systems, and can also be utilized with dynamic nodes that analyze the failure sequences of subcomponents. The combinatorial use of a reliability matrix with dynamic nodes is illustrated through an application to a shutdown cooling system in a nuclear power plant.

  • In general, software test is carried out to detect or repair errors in system during software development process. Namely, we can evaluate software reliability through collecting and removing the faults detected in testing phase. Software reliability growth model evaluates reliability of software mathematically. Many kinds of software reliability growth modeling which modeling the processes of detecting, revising and removing the faults detected in testing phase have been proposed in many ways. and, it is assumed that almost of these modeling have one typed detect and show the uniformed detection rate. In this study, significance levels of the faults detected in test phase are classified according to how they can affect on the whole system and then the fault detection capability of them is applied. From this point of view, We here by propose a software reliability growth model with faults detection capability according considering fault significance levels and apply some fault data to this proposed model and finally verify its validity by comparing and estimating with the existing modeling.

  • The geometric process (GP) has been widely used for modeling failure and repair time sequences of repairable systems. The GP is mathematically tractable but restrictive in reliability applications since it actually assumes that the mean function of inter-failure times sequence asymptotically decreases to zero; and the mean function of successive repair times sequence asymptotically increases to infinity. This is generally unrealistic from an engineering perspective. This paper presents three extended GP models for modeling reliability deterioration and improvement (or growth) process. The extensions maintain the advantage of mathematical tractability of GP model. Their usefulness and appropriateness are illustrated with three real-world examples.

  • This paper presents a probabilistic investigation of American and European specifications (i.e., AISC and Eurocode 4) for square concrete-filled steel tubular (CFT) stub columns. The study is based on experimental results of 100 axially loaded square CFT stub columns from the literature. By comparing experimental results for ultimate loads with code-predicted column resistances, the uncertainty of resistance models is analyzed and it is found that the modeling uncertainty parameter can be described using random variables of lognormal distribution. Reliability analyses were then performed with/without considering the modeling uncertainty parameter and the safety level of the specifications is evaluated in terms of sufficient and uniform reliability criteria. Results show that: (1) The AISC design code provided slightly conservative results of square CFT stub columns with reliability indices larger than 3.25 and the uniformness of reliability indices is no better because of the quality of the resistance model; (2) The uniformness of reliability indices for the Eurocode 4 was better than that of AISC, but the reliability indices of columns designed following the Eurocode 4 were found to be quite below the target reliability level of Eurocode 4.
