  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the number of measurement points on the calculation of transverse relaxation time (T2) with a focus on muscle T2. Materials and Methods: This study assumed that muscle T2 was comprised of a single component. Two phantom types were measured, 1 each for long ("phantom") and short T2 ("polyvinyl alcohol gel"). Right calf muscle T2 measurements were conducted in 9 healthy male volunteers using multiple-spin-echo magnetic resonance imaging. For phantoms and muscle (medial gastrocnemius), 5 regions of interests were selected. All region of interest values were expressed as the mean ${\pm}$ standard deviation. The T2 effective signal-ratio characteristics were used as an index to evaluate the magnetic resonance image quality for the calculation of T2 from T2-weighted images. The T2 accuracy was evaluated to determine the T2 reproducibility and the goodness-of-fit from the probability Q. Results: For the phantom and polyvinyl alcohol gel, the standard deviation of the magnetic resonance image signal at each echo time was narrow and mono-exponential, which caused large variations in the muscle T2 decay curves. The T2 effective signal-ratio change varied with T2, with the greatest decreases apparent for a short T2. There were no significant differences in T2 reproducibility when > 3 measurement points were used. There were no significant differences in goodness-of-fit when > 6 measurement points were used. Although the measurement point evaluations were stable when > 3 measurement points were used, calculation of T2 using 4 measurement points had the highest accuracy according to the goodness-of-fit. Even if the number of measurement points was increased, there was little improvement in the probability Q. Conclusion: Four measurement points gave excellent reproducibility and goodness-of-fit when muscle T2 was considered mono-exponential.

  • It has been known that the inertial dynamics has a little effect on the reaction rate in solutions. In this work, however, we find that for diffusion-controlled reactions between a ligand and a receptor on the cell surface there is a noticeable inertial dynamic effect on the reaction rate. We estimate the magnitude of the inertial dynamic effect by comparing the approximate analytic results obtained with and without the inertial dynamic effect included. The magnitude of the inertial dynamic effect depends on the friction coefficient of the ligand as well as on the relative scale of the receptor size to the distance traveled by the ligand during its velocity relaxation time.

  • The ionization energy and degree of ionization for Si and Ge with boron doping are calculated. The hole mobilities are then calculated as a function of doping concentration using the relaxation time approximation. When the screening effect is taken into account, the reduction of ionization energy results in the increase of degree of ionization. As a result, the calculated Si mobility becomes closer to the experimental data, whereas the calculated Ge mobility is almost independent of the screening effect. The inclusion of the broadening effect in the mobility calculation overestimates the ionized impurity scattering. As compared with the experiment, the screening effect is not avoidable to calculate Si and Ge mobilities, and the broadening effect must accompany with the hopping process.

  • Numerical calculation for temperature dependence of galvanomagnetic properties of thin bismuth films is pursued. The quasi-two dimensional system is treated in the perturbation formalism of previous study, where realistic screened potential due to impurity is assumed to be the only scattering channel. The potential is separated into pure two dimensional part and the remaining presumed perturbation part. Relaxation time and mobilities for both electron and hole are evaluated, then temperature dependence of the Hall coefficient and magnetoresistance is obtained. The broad minimum of magnetoresistnace is manifested, and the interpretation under the kinetic theory is made. Thickness dependence of the quantities are also shown, which are in good agreement with the expected quantum size effect.

  • The purpose of this research paper is to depict the thermomechanical interactions in transversely isotropic magneto thermoelastic solid with two temperatures and without energy dissipation in generalized LS theories of thermoelasticity. The Laplace and Fourier transform techniques have been used to find the solution of the problem. The displacement components, stress components, and conductive temperature distribution with the horizontal distance are computed in the transformed domain and further calculated in the physical domain numerically. The effect of two temperature and relaxation time are depicted graphically on the resulting quantities.

  • The heat generated by nonradiative decay dynamics induces thermal lens effect. From such an effect, photodynamic properties of solutions can be investigated with two-color pulsed thermal lens experiments which have the time resolution of down to nanoseconds. In this study, using nanosecond two-color thermal lens method, we investigated the triplet state of benzophenone and the singlet oxygen state dynamics in various oxygen concentration solvents. The measured triplet state lifetimes, singlet oxygen relaxation times and singlet oxygen formation quantum yields are in good agreement with the reference values. From these parameters the existence of the triplet exciplex formation between benzophenone and benzene is proved, and it is also suggested that the relaxations of triplet states of benzophenone undergo coupled dynamics with some of singlet oxygens in oxygen-rich conditions.

  • The primary mechanism of smooth muscle contraction is phosphorylation of the 20 kDa myosin light chains(LC20) by a myosin light chain kinase(MLCK). Relaxation, then, is generally the result of dephosphorylation of LC20 by myosin phosphatase(MP). Changes in MP activity is one of the important mechanisms in the regulation of Ca2+-sensitivity. Inhibition of MP activity is linked to an increase in phosphorylated myosin light chain(MLC) without an increase in [Ca/sup 2+/]i-levels. It is now generally accepted that Rho-kinase phosphorylates 130 kDa regulatory and myosin binding subunits(M130, MYPT) of MP, which results in an inhibition of MP activity. In addition Rho-kinase can also directly phosphorylate MLC. In the present study, LC20 phosphorylation and MP subunits translocation to the cell membrane were investigated in freshly isolated ferret portal vein smooth muscle single cells treated with PGF2α. We also examined the effect of Y27632(10-5mol/L), Rho-kinase inhibitor, in the MP subunits localization to compare with butanol fraction of Fructus Crataegi in its effect. Butanol fraction of Fructus Crataegi(BFFC; 1㎎/㎖) was more effective in PGF2α induced contraction than those of phenylephrine in its vasodilation effect. It significantly(P<0.05) dephosphorylated the LC20 at time indicated. In addition, the dissociation of subunits are inhibited by BFCF treatment. The results indicate that, in the smooth muscle cells, the relaxation effect of BFFC is associated with increase of MP activity based on inhibition of dissociation of the catalytic and targeting subunits of the phosphatase, and thus decrease the sensitivity of LC20 phosphorylation for Ca/sup 2+/.

  • We studied the characteristics of emissive state of the first (p-G1) and second (p-G2) generation of phenylacetylene dendrimers bearing stilbene as a core by using time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy in cyclohexane (c-Hex) and N, N-dimethylformide (DMF), which are nonpolar and polar solvents, respectively. Time-dependent red-shift of emission spectra p-G2 both in c-Hex and DMF was observed in comparison with p-G1. Besides, the time constant of red-shift of spectra was found to be larger in DMF than in c-Hex. This indicates that the emissive state of p-G2 has a polar character in DMF as a result of charge delocalization from core to peripheral dendrons followed by stabilization of emissive state.
