Friction piles are being constructed in Southeast Asia (Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam, etc.) where the soft ground is deep, and many cases of friction piles are accumulated in terms of experience. In this study, we used the results of four static load test and load transfer test conducted in Myanmar sites to analyze the skin friction of soil layer. In addition, we proposed a relationship chart with skin friction measured in the N-value of Standard Penetration Test (SPT) and the load transfer test result of the single drilled shaft. In the case of Myanmar sites, the range of soil layers was deeper than domestic sites, so the conventional formula of skin friction using the N-value of SPT is different from domestic sites. In sandy layer, fs = 0.096 N in Myanmar sites showed a similar result of the domestic fs = 0.106 N. In clayey layer, fs = 0.315 N, in Myanmar sites showed about 5.0 times higher than the domestic fs = 0.062 N. The results of this study are based on limited data. Therefore, if we analyze the results of more load transfer tests, we can suggest a conventional formula for skin friction according to the N-value. It is expected to be used as important basic data in the future.

Most breakwater armor blocks are designed by using Hudson's or van der Meer's formula. The minimum weight of armor blocks is calculated by equating the resistance to the load in each formula. The larger value is then chosen as the design weight. In this study, we have performed reliability analyses for thus designed breakwater armor blocks of 12 trade harbors and 8 coastal harbors in Korea. The probability of failure calculated by the reliability analysis provides a criterion for evaluating the stability of armor blocks. The calculated probability of failure was almost same for all the breakwaters so that we were able to quantitatively evaluate the safety level of armor blocks of existing breakwaters. We also found that the safety factor used in the deterministic design method and the probability of failure in the reliability design method show a linear relationship. Therefore the probability of failure of existing breakwaters can be quantitatively calculated from the safety factors. The calculated probability of failure could also be used for determining the target probability of failure in the future.

This study is to derive the rainfall intensity formula based on the representative probability distribution using multivariate analysis in Korea. The annual maximum rainfall data at 57 stations having more than 30years long records were used for 12 durations(10min, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 18, 24hr). 50 rainfall characteristics elements are analyzed from the collected data. The widely used 14 probability distributions are applied to the basic data in hydrologic frequency analysis. The homogeneous tests(principal component and cluster analysis) are applied to find the rainfall homogeneity. The results of this study are as followings; (1) The homogeneous test shows that there is no appropriate representative distribution for the whole duration in Korea. But hydrological homogeneous regions of point rainfall could be divided by 5 regions. (2) The GEV distribution for zones I, III, IV, V and the Gumbel distribution for zone II are determined as the representative probability distribution. (3) Comparative analysis of the results shows that the probable rainfalls of representative zones are different from those of existing researches. (4) Rainfall intensity formulas are determined on the basis of the linearization technique for the probable rainfall.

The aim of this study is to suggest a semi-empirical equation for estimating the hydraulic conductivity of sands using geoelectrical measurements technique. The suggested formula is based on the original Kozeny-Carman equation; therefore varying factors affecting the Kozeny-Carman equation were selected as the testing variables, and six different sands with varying particle sizes and particle shapes were used as the testing materials in this study. To measure both hydraulic and electrical conductivities, a series of constant head permeameter tests equipped with the four electrodes conductivity probe was conducted. Test results reveal that the effects of both pore water conductivity and flow rate in relation between hydraulic conductivity and formation factor (=pore water conductivity / measused conductivity of soil) of tested materials are negligible. However, because the variations of hydraulic conductivity of the tested sands according to particle sizes are significant, the estimated hydraulic conductivity using the formation factor varies with particle sizes. The overall comparison between the measured hydraulic conductivity and the estimated hydraulic conductivity using the suggested formula shows a good agreement, and the variation of hydraulic conductivity with varying Archie's m exponents is smaller compared with varying porosities.
Many previously described nuclear medicine procedures to assess glomerular filtration rate have some problems because numerous blood sample is to be taken and they don't measure each separate renal function. Gates described isotopic method for the measurement of global and unilateral GFR based on the fractional renal uptake of $^{99m}Tc$-DTPA 2 to 3 minutes after its intravenous injection. We evaluated GFR using $^{99m}Tc$-DTPA in 57 people according to Gates method and compared with creatinine clearance. A good correlation was observed between creatinine clearance and GFR calculated by Gates' formula with an r value of 0.9(P<0.05). And also the relationship between parameters of $^{99m}Tc$-DTPA renal scan images and GFR was taken. They were significantly correlated with GFR calculated by Gates' formula : r value 0.66 between relative intensity of peak renal to peak aortic activity(pK/pA) and GFR, -0.42 between time between aortic and kidney peak(A-K) and GFR and -0.48 between parenchymal renal activity at 25 min compared to peak kidney activity(25K/pK) and GFR. In conclusion, the determination of GFR according to the Gates' formula shows good and reproducible of GFR with rapidity and simplicity. And the parameters from the renal scan images can use to estimate the renal function.
The ideal goal of the coronary artery bypass surgery is complete revascularization. To estimate the numerical degree of completeness of revascularization, the following formula was used in 50 patients having aorta-coronary bypass grafting for the treatment of unstable angina. myocardial perfusion score of revascularized area Degree of Completeness = ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- x100[%] preoperative myocardial perfusion score Randomized patients who underwent revascularization procedures in 19Hb were compared with the patients who received similar elective operation each year from 1988 through 1991. To obtain these data, the patients aged 38 ~ 75[mean 54$\pm$9.1years], composed of 31 males and 19 females were randomly sampled. The number of grafts per patient increased from 2.30 in 1986, to 3.07 in 1988 - 89, to 3.21 in 1990, and to 3.50 in 1991. [0.05 The degree of completeness improved from 75.4% to 81.4%, 91.6% and 88.6% respectively. It improved significantly in the last two years, [P<0.05, Mann-Whitney U test] At a follow-up of three months, 90 percent[45/50] of patients remained angina, free, 6 percent[3/50] had residual angina, and 4 percent[2/50] died. The last two patients degree of completeness corresponded to 43% and 30% respectively As a conclusion, the degree of completeness seems to improve year by year, and to have close relationship with the clinical results.

Axial piston pumps have been widely used as power sources for hydraulic systems, but studies on the fluid flow within the pump have been usually performed using 1-D analysis because of the difficulties in considering the fluid compressibility, high-speed revolution, variation of the flow rate, and complicated geometry. The goal of this study was to understand the hydraulic fluid flow within axial piston pumps by using the 3-D numerical method and the process of generating discharge pressure ripples. To improve the convergence and robustness of the simulation model, a grid system was constructed with hexahedron-type grids around the valve plate. Furthermore, we employed an empirical formula to describe the relationship between the oil density and pressure. The CFD (computational fluid dynamics) results compared well with the experimental data.

In a parametric sample selection model, the distribution assumption is critical to obtain consistent estimates. Conventionally, the normality assumption has been adopted for both error terms in selection and main equations of the model. The normality assumption, however, may excessively restrict the true underlying distribution of the model. This study introduces the $S_U$-normal distribution into the error distribution of a sample selection model. The $S_U$-normal distribution can accommodate a wide range of skewness and kurtosis compared to the normal distribution. It also includes the normal distribution as a limiting distribution. Moreover, the $S_U$-normal distribution can be easily extended to multivariate dimensions. We provide the log-likelihood function and expected value formula based on a bivariate $S_U$-normal distribution in a sample selection model. The results of simulations indicate the $S_U$-normal model outperforms the normal model for the consistency of estimators. As an empirical application, we provide the sample selection model for car ownership and a car expense relationship.
In the present study, the prediction methods of the crest settlement after impounding and the maximum internal settlement during dam construction were proposed through the analysis on settlement data at 38 monitored points of 36 Concrete-Faced Rockfill Dams (CFRDs). The results from this analysis provided that the crest settlement and the maximum internal settlement are increased in proportion to the dam height and the void ratio. However, the relationship between internal settlement and dam height for each void-ratio range plotted in semi-logarithmic scale is the nearly same. Also, the prediction of the crest settlement of the CFRD is possible through the maximum internal settlement during dam construction. In addition, it seems that the valley shape highly affects the dense dam body with high construction modulus. The results of this study will provide the useful tool for the design, construction and management of CFRDs.
