The objectives of this study were to compare the development of compressive strength of epoxy resin mortars used as repairing materials with respect to maturity, and to propose a predictive model for strength development of epoxy resin mortar. A series of tests were carried out for the hardener contents of 30, 40 and 50 percentage of resin and compressive strength were measured at the of 6, 12, 24, 72, 120 and 168 hours respectively under temperature of 0, 10, 20 and 3$0^{\circ}C$. The datum temperature was estimated by measured strength, and the maturity is calculated with the estimated datum temperature. The compressive strength of epoxy resin mortar could be predicted by regression analysis from the maturity-compressive strength relationship.
Triaxial behavior of concrete cylinders wrapped with FRP material has been investigated for the increase of concrete strength by lateral confinement. Using the model by Richart et al., a modified empirical equation was proposed to estimate the strength of concrete cylinders with FRP confinement based on the linear relationship between the concrete strength and lateral confining pressure. From the experimental stress-strain result of the cylinder specimens having similar confining pressure, less ductility was observed for higher strength concrete. But the compressive strength of the specimen was linearly increased by lateral confinement. The confinement effectiveness coefficient for the strength enhancement of the cylinders by FRP wrap was obtained as 2.27 from the regression analysis.
In this paper, a laboratory investigation was carried out to estimate the strength improvement of quicklime mixture with fly ash and rice husk ash for the effective use of surplus soils, and the shear strength with curing time was estimated at lime 10 percent with the change of fly ash and rice husk ash content. The effect of strength improvement has been established through the change of fly ash and rice husk ash content from the samples taken at Samsan region, Ulsan. The test results indicated that the presence of lime with fly ash and rice husk ash encouraged the stabilization efficiency of lime with fly ash and rice husk ash, and increased shear strength. Furthermore, it is necessary for inquiring into the relationship between the characteristics of strength and the chemical components.
The shear strength of jointed rock is influenced by effective normal stress, joint wall compressive strength, joint roughness and so on. Since joint roughness makes considerable influences on shear strength of jointed rock, many studies tried to get quantitative joint roughness parameter. Until now, Joint Roughness Coefficient, JRC proposed by Barton has been prevalently used as a rock joint roughness parameter In spite of its disadvantages. In this study, a quantification of rock joint roughness is performed using surface roughness parameter, Rs. Proposed method is applied to rock core specimens, field joint surfaces, and JRC profiles. The scale of fluctuation is introduced to extend the suggested method to the large scale field joint surface roughness. Based on the quantification of joint surface roughness, joint shear tests are performed with the portable shear box. The relationship between joint surface roughness and joint shear strength is investigated and finally, a rock joint shear strength equation is derived from these results. The equation has considerable credibility and originality in that it is obtained from laboratory tests and expressed with quantified parameter.
A study on the strength of steel tubular column filled with concrete under cocentrically compressed load is presented in this paper. This paper is structured as follows. The first section briefly discusses the M-N relationship formula derived for CFT, highlighting the additional moment effect. Next, the simple superposed method used to generate the strength formula of CFT loaded concentrically is described. In the final portion of this paper, the presented formula is compared to experimental data reported. The applicability of CFT strength formula presented here is limited somewhat by scope of concrete strength but can predict the strength of CFT simply and rapidly. The objective of this paper is to approach the strength of CFT theoretically and to examine the feasibility of presented formula.
In this study, the correlation between the properties of concrete in the fresh state and the compressive strength of hardened concrete was analyzed. It was found that the compressive strength increased as the values of T500 and plastic viscosity increased. However, there is a relationship between T500, which is a qualitative method, and compressive strength, but it seems difficult to predict through this. However, the correlation between plastic viscosity and compressive strength appears to be high, and it is believed that compressive strength can be predicted, but more data will be collected in the future for additional analysis. I think this will be necessary.
This paper summarizes the results of a study which uses the recently developed Optical Profile Microscopy technique (Dove and Frost, 1996) as the basis for investigating the role of geomembrane surface roughness on the shear mechanism of geomembrane/geotextile interfaces. The alternative roughness parameters which consider the direction of shearing are described. These directional parameters are compared with the existing roughness parameters, and the relationship between these directional and non-directional parameters are investigated. Then, the relationship between interface shear strength and surface roughness quantified at the interface is investigated. The results show that interface friction can be quantitatively related to the surface roughness of the geomembrane. The peak and residual interface strengths increase dramatically through the use of textured geomembranes as opposed to smooth geomembranes. For the smooth geomembranes, the sliding of the geotextile is the main shear mechanism. For the textured geomembranes, the peak interface strength is mainly mobilized through the micro-texture of the geomembrane, however, the residual interface strength is primarily attributed to macro scale surface roughness which pulls out and breaks the filaments from the geotextile. The results of this study can be extended to the other interfaces such as joints in rock mass, and also can be used to provide a quantitative framework that can lead to a significantly improved basis for the selection and design of geotextiles and geomembranes in direct contact.
This paper suggests a monitoring method for the pulsed laser spot welding of the thin metal sheets using a point IR(InfraRed) sensor. A new criterion was introduced and the experimental results guaranteed the efficiency. The ideal radiation feature was derived from the mathematical model and was simulated. The radiation feature is robust to withstand the change of measuring condition and can be used to detect the absorbed laser energy. In an experiment, the radiation feature was examined for the differect laser energy. The pulse width and the laser power was variated and the radiation feature was examined. In the other experiment, the relationship between the weld strength and radiation feature was examined. Artificial Neural Network(ANN) was employed to find out the relationship. The correlation coefficient between the real strength and the estimated strength is high as 0.94 and the mean square error is low as 0.64 kgf learned parts. Another group of the welds was used to appraise the learning efficiency. The correlation coefficient between the measured and the estimated weld strength is high as 0.91.
In this paper, when CF/EPOXY laminates for high efficiency space structure are subjected to FOD(Foreign Object Damage), the effects of temperature change on the impact damages(inter laminar separation and transverse crack) of CF/EPOXY laminates and the relationship between residual life and impact damages ale experimentally investigated. Composite laminates used in this experiment are CF/EPOXY orthotropic laminated plates, which have two-interfaces $[0^{\circ}_6/90^{\circ}_6]S$ and four-interfaces $[0^{\circ}_3/90^{\circ}_6/0^{\circ}_3]S$. CF/EPOXY specimens with impact damages caused by a steel ball launched from the air gun were observed by the scanning acoustic microscope under room and high temperatures. In this experimental results, various relations were experimentally observed including the delamination area vs. temperature change, the bending strength vs. impact energy and the residual bending strength vs. impact damage of CF/EPOXY laminates. And as the temperature of CF/PEEK laminates increases, the delaminaion areas of impact-induced damages decrease linearly. A linear relationship between the impact energy and the delamination areas were observed. As the temperature of CF/PEEK laminates increases, the delamination areas decrease because of higher initial delaminatin damage energy.
