  • XML has been become the new standard for publishing and exchanging data on the Web. However, most business data is still stored and maintained in relational database management systems. As such, there is an increasing need to efficiently publish relational data as XML data for Internet-based applications. The most important issue in the transformation is to reflect structural and semantic relations of RDB to XML schema exactly. Most transformation approaches have been done to resolve the issue, but those methods have several problems. In this paper, we discuss algorithm in transforming a relational database schema into corresponding XML schema in XML Schema. We aim to achieve not only explicit/implicit referential integrity relation information but also high level of nested structure while introducing no data redundancy for the transformed XML schema. To achieve these goals, we propose a transformation model which is redundancy free and then we improve the XML Schema structure by exploring more nested structure.

  • This paper focuses on how modem data mining can be integrated with real-time relational databases and commercial data warehouses to improve reliability in real-time. An important Issue for many manufacturers is the development of relational databases that link key product attributes with real-time process parameters. Helpful data for key product attributes in manufacturing may be derived from destructive reliability testing. Destructive samples are taken at periodic time intervals during manufacturing, which might create a long time-gap between key product attributes and real-time process data. A case study is briefly summarized for the medium density fiberboard (MDF) industry. MDF is a wood composite that is used extensively by the home building and furniture manufacturing industries around the world. The cost of unacceptable MDF was as large as 5% to 10% of total manufacturing costs. Prevention can result In millions of US dollars saved by using better Information systems.

  • This paper proposes an analysis method of petri nets(PNs) using the relational algebra(RA). More wpecifically, we represent PNs in relations of the relational model. Based on such representation, we first develop an algorithm for generating reachability trees of PNs. we then develop an algorithm for generating reachability trees of PNs. We then develop algorithms for analyzing properties of PNs, such as boundedness, conservation, coverability, reachability, and liveness. The advantage of this approach is as follows: First, the algorithms represented by RA can be easity converted to a query language such as SQL of the widely used, commerical relational database management systems(DBMSs). Second, we can alleviate the problem of state space explosion because relational DBMSs can handle large amounts of data efficiently. Finally, we can use the DBMS's query language to interpret the Petri nets and make simulation.

  • As XML becomes the standard of digital data exchange format we need to manage a lot of XML data effectively. Unlike tables in relational model XML documents are not structural. That makes it difficult to store XML documents as tables in relational model. To solve these problems there have been significant researches in relational database systems. There are two kinds of approaches: 1) One way is to decompose XML documents so that elements of XML match fields of relational tables. 2) The other one stores a whole XML document as a field of relational table. In this paper we adopted the second approach to store XML documents because sometimes it is not easy for us to decompose XML documents and in some cases their element order in documents are very meaningful. We suggest an efficient table schema to store only inverted index as tables to retrieve required data from XML data fields of relational tables and shows SQL translations that correspond to XML full-text retrievals. The functionalities of XML retrieval are based on the W3C XQuery which includes full-text retrievals. In this paper we show the superiority of our method by comparing the performances in terms of a response time and a space to store inverted index. Experiments show our approach uses less space and shows faster response times.

  • In shipbuilding area, data sharing is one of the crucial issues. Recently, for collaborative design, ship structural CAD systems adopt the database as its primary storage. Database is useful to deal with the large amount of design information among the heterogeneous design department and design stage. To make the database-based CAD system object-oriented database(OODB) and object-relational database(ORDB) can be used. It is important to select proper database because the CAD system performance mainly depends on access performance of database. In this research, using prototype CAD system from other research, access performance of OODB and ORDB form CAD system was evaluated. STEP application protocol was used as the database schema and experiment was made in query by property and query by region. The results give some idea of how to choose the database for CAD systems.

  • In the paper, we describe the query extension techniques for spatiotemporal query functionalities on object-relational DBMS. The spatial objects in real world change the shapes over time. Spatiotemporal databases support to manage a temporal dimension as well as a spatial dimension for history of the objects. The proposed techniques can make conventional object-relational databases to support spatiotemporal databases system by the implementation and inheritance of abstract data types. We define and implement spatial and temporal classes as superclass. And, spatiotemporal classes inherits and extends the classes. The proposed extensions make it easy that conventional database systems not only are transformed into the spatiotemporal database systems, but also do not need to be changed to support spatiotemporal applications.

  • As XML is increasingly used for representing and exchanging data, relational database systems have been trying extend their features to handle XML documents XML documents can be stored in a column with XML data type like primitive types. The shredding method, which is one of the traditional methods for storing and managing XML documents in RDBMS, is still useful and viable although it has some drawbacks due to the structural discrepancy between XML and relational databases. This method may be suitable for data-centric XML documents with simple schema. This paper presents the extended version of the Association inlining method that is based on inlined shredding and compares the performance of querying processing to that of XML type method of conventional relational database systems. The experiments showed that in most cases our method resulted in better performance than the other method based on XML data type. This is due to the fact that our shredding method keeps and uses the order and path information of XML documents. The path table has the information of the corresponding table and column for each distinct path and the structure information of the XML document is extracted and stored in data tables.

  • In distributed data processing environments, heterogeneous data sources should corporate each other. The CORBA standards proposed by OMG solve this problem by the integration of platform independent applications. In this paper, we design and implement a CASE tool that help linking CORBA applications to relational databases by interface method. This CASE tool manipulates the database schema and generates IDL and $C^{++}$ stubs corresponding to the schema. We explain the code generation process and evaluate the data access performance of the interface method compared to adapter method and various implementation languages. The implemented tool can be used for developing applications that need relational database corporation environments such as distributed information systems or data warehousing. etc.

  • XML is a standard format of web data and is currently used as a prevailing language for exchanging data. Most of the commercial data are stored in a relational database. It is quite important to convert these conventionally stored data into those for exchange and use them in data exchange, or to get the query results effectively by utilizing XQL on XML data which are store in a relational database. Thus, it is absolutely required to have a proper query processing mechanism for XML data and to maintain many XML data properly. Up to now, many cases of researches on the storage and retrieval of XML data have been carried out and under study. But, effective retrieval and storage system for path queries like XQL has yet to be contrived. Thus, in this paper, a schema to store XML data is designed, in which DFS-Numbegering method is used to store data effectively. And an effective path query processing method is also designed and implemented, in which a traditional relational database engine is used. That is, XQL is converted into SQL with a XQL processor if a user makes query XQL in a system. A database system executes SQL, and a XML generator uses a generated record and makes a XML document.

  • A study of the conceptual data modeling to realize the decommissioning database on the HRR-1&2 was carried out. In this study, the current state of the abroad decommissioning database was investigated to make a reference of the database. A scope of the construction of decommissioning database has been set up based on user requirements. Then, a theory of the database construction was established and a scheme on the decommissioning information was classified . The facility information, work information, radioactive waste information, and radiological information dealing with the decommissioning database were extracted through interviews with an expert group and also decided upon the system configuration of the decommissioning database. A code which is composed of 17 bit was produced considering the construction, scheme and information. The results of the conceptual data modeling and the classification scheme will be used as basic data to create a prototype design of the decommissioning database.
