  • In this paper, we propose a method of managing versions of XML documents by using relational databases. Data structures based on relational tables are developed for accommodating versions of XML documents. The structure information, the contents, and changes of the versions are stored in relational tables. Thus, SQL can be exploited in queries such as horizontal queries, vertical queries, and delta queries without parsing the documents. The structure information and contents of all versions are not represented explicitly in the tables, those of certain versions which are called snapshot versions are represented. Other versions are represented indirectly as sequences of operations that are stored in the corresponding tables. The experiment shows the space performance.

  • VHDL has been. widely used in modeling and simulation of hardware designs. However, complex relationship between components of the designs makes the VHDL modeling problem very difficult. Furthermore, after the initial creation of VHDL models, they evolve into many versions over their lifetime. To cope with such difficulties, this paper proposes a new methodology for the management of VHDL models supporting versions. Its conceptual bases are system entity structure and relational database. Within the methodology, a family of hierarchical structures of a design is organized in the form of VHDL model structure. It is, in turn, represented in the form of relational tables. Once the model structure is built in such a way, a specific simulation model which meets design objective is pruned from the model structure. The details of VHDL codes are systematically synthesized by combining it with the primitive models in a model base. These algorithms are also defined in terms of relational algebraic operations.

  • Purpose: Participation of firms in Global Value Chains (GVC) has contributed significantly to the improvement of economic outcomes for firms in developing countries. However, evidence suggests that these economic outcomes are gained at the cost of labourers' poor working conditions. This research contributes to existing literature on GVCs by investigating the influence of different governance structures on economic and social upgrading of firms participating in GVCs. Furthermore, the research attempts to understand the relationship between economic and social upgrading in GVCs. Research design and methodology: Detailed qualitative primary research was carried out in the football industry of Sialkot, Pakistan. The case study approach was employed, and football firms were the unit of analysis. Semi-structured interviews with firms' representatives were conducted. Results: Findings reveal that most firms were found in captive, relational and market governance structures. Furthermore, product and process upgrading were witnessed in all firms; however, social upgrading was observed mostly in captive and relational GVCs. Moreover, social upgrading was linked to economic upgrading in captive and relational networks. Conclusions: The findings from the Sialkot football industry reflect that buyers pay higher prices and margins to their suppliers once they upgrade their products and processes.

  • Outlier detection is an imperative task to identify the occurrence of abnormal events before the structures are suffered from sudden failure during their service lives. This paper proposes a two-phase method for the outlier detection of Global Positioning System (GPS) monitoring data. Prompt judgment of the occurrence of abnormal data is firstly carried out by use of the relational analysis as the relationship among the data obtained from the adjacent locations following a certain rule. Then, a negative selection algorithm (NSA) is adopted for further accurate localization of the abnormal data. To reduce the computation cost in the NSA, an improved scheme by integrating the adjustable radius into the training stage is designed and implemented. Numerical simulations and experimental verifications demonstrate that the proposed method is encouraging compared with the original method in the aspects of efficiency and reliability. This method is only based on the monitoring data without the requirement of the engineer expertise on the structural operational characteristics, which can be easily embedded in a software system for the continuous and reliable monitoring of civil infrastructure.

  • XML instances for purpose of information exchange are normally stored in the legacy relational database. Therefore, integrations with relational database are required for effective XML applications. To support these requirements, virtual decomposition storage or decomposition storage methods which save separates structures of instances to relational database have researched. However, these storage methods contain different information of schema structure and layers which has caused difficulties to process query during search operation as well as increased overheads due to duplicate savings for separate storages. Therefore, in this research, additional field of 'Eltype' has introduced to previous database schema structure to instance and schema structure, provide consistent level information and propose storage structure to map each field to schema field of relational database. As results, XML instance and structures can be stored together to minimize overheads and required storage-space. Also, synchronized storage layer structure provides easier processing of search query.

  • The ISO/IEC 11179 Metadata registry (MDR) is an international standard that was developed to register and share metadata. ISO/IEC 11179 represents an MDR as a metamodel that is an object model. However, it is difficult to develop an MDR based on ISO/IEC 11179 because the standard has no clear criteria to transform the metamodel into a database. In this paper, we suggest the design of an MDR data model that is based on object-relational transformation methodology (ORTM) for the MDR implementation. Hence, we classify the transformation methods of ORTM according to the corresponding relationships. After classification, we propose modeling rules by defining the standard use of the transformation. This paper builds the relational database tables as an implementation result of an MDR data model. Through experiments and evaluation, we verify the proposed modeling rules and evaluate the suitability of the created table structures. As the result, the proposed method shows that the table structures preserve classes and relationships of the standard metamodel well.

  • HTML revolutionized the way we specify the appearance of data on the Internet. Today, XML (the eXtensible Markup Language) is changing the way we specify the meaning of data. XML, lets document authors define their own markup tags and attribute names to assign meaning to the data elements in the document. Further, XML elements can be nested and include references to indicate data relationships, as Listing One. Unlike HTML, XML markup tags do not describe how to render the data. Rather, they provide descriptions of data, allowing software to understand the meaning of the data automatically For publishing, instead, XSL, the eXtensible Stylesheet Language as a separate language , is in charge of specifying the presentation of XML documents. The purpose of this study is to discover how to transform your organizations relational data into potential e-commerce, business-to-business, and web application with XML and XSL documents. For this purpose, the literature survey, first of all, was undertaken to understand the basic structures of XML documents. Second, one case implementation was performed to understand how to transform Access 2002 XML Files into HTML with XSLTand VB script. The results come out to be successful, more or less. But the limitations of it still exist. One immediate limitation is that XML documents are essentially tree structure, as dictated by the nesting of elements. However, relational database tables are two dimensional matrix structure. In addition, real-world data often is graph structured-a single data element may be referenced in multiple ways. However, this study is useful for understanding how to convert relational database into XML documents and to publish them using XSL or VB script.

  • For the mapping of two dimensional table structures of relational databases to the hierarchical XML documents, we apply the foreign key relationships of relational databases. In other words, the primary key of another table referenced by a foreign key of one tuple is mapped to the parent of the foreign key. Then XML hierarchies with order are expressed. In addition, the XML view file generated by the foreign key mappings shows side effects in the case of the relational database update for the satisfaction of referential integrity constraint in the foreign key. Thus, by inferring the foreign key roles at the generation of XML hierarchies, we can anticipate where the side effects occur in the hierarchies. We keep the XML view files up-to-date by reflecting the side effects to the XML files at the update of the underlying relational databases.
