Galaxy transition from star-forming to quiescent, accompanied with morphology transformation, is one of the key unresolved issues in extragalactic astronomy. Although several environmental mechanisms have been proposed, a deeper understanding of the impact of environment on galaxy transition still requires much exploration. My Ph.D. thesis focuses on which environmental mechanisms are primarily responsible for galaxy transition in different environments and looks at what happens during the transition phase using multi-wavelength photometric/spectroscopic data, from UV to mid-infrared (MIR), derived from several large surveys (GALEX, SDSS, and WISE) and our GMOS-North IFU observations. Our multi-wavelength approach provides new insights into the *late* stages of galaxy transition with a definition of the MIR green valley different from the optical green valley. I will present highlights from three areas in my thesis. First, through an in-depth study of environmental dependence of various properties of galaxies in a nearby supercluster A2199 (Lee et al. 2015), we found that the star formation of galaxies is quenched before the galaxies enter the MIR green valley, which is driven mainly by strangulation. Then, the morphological transformation from late- to early-type galaxies occurs in the MIR green valley. The main environmental mechanisms for the morphological transformation are galaxy-galaxy mergers and interactions that are likely to happen in high-density regions such as galaxy groups/clusters. After the transformation, early-type MIR green valley galaxies keep the memory of their last star formation for several Gyr until they move on to the next stage for completely quiescent galaxies. Second, compact groups (CGs) of galaxies are the most favorable environments for galaxy interactions. We studied MIR properties of galaxies in CGs and their environmental dependence (Lee et al. 2017), using a sample of 670 CGs identified using a friends-of-friends algorithms. We found that MIR [3.4]-[12] colors of CG galaxies are, on average, bluer than those of cluster galaxies. As CGs are located in denser regions, they tend to have larger early-type galaxy fractions and bluer MIR color galaxies. These trends can also be seen for neighboring galaxies around CGs. However, CG members always have larger early-type fractions and bluer MIR colors than their neighboring galaxies. These results suggest that galaxy evolution is faster in CGs than in other environments and that CGs are likely to be the best place for pre-processing. Third, post-starburst galaxies (PSBs) are an ideal laboratory to investigate the details of the transition phase. Their spectra reveal a phase of vigorous star formation activity, which is abruptly ended within the last 1 Gyr. Numerical simulations predict that the starburst, and thus the current A-type stellar population, should be localized within the galaxy's center (< kpc). Yet our GMOS IFU observations show otherwise; all five PSBs in our sample have Hdelta absorption line profiles that extend well beyond the central kpc. Most interestingly, we found a negative correlation between the Hdelta gradient slopes and the fractions of the stellar mass produced during the starburst, suggesting that stronger starbursts are more centrally-concentrated. I will discuss the results in relation with the origin of PSBs.
The purpose of this study is to develop social skill training in order to reduce problematic behaviors and improve peer relations for elementary school students who have ADHD(Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and then verify its effectiveness. The problems for this study are as follows: Firstly, is the social skill training for students with ADHD effective in enhancing their self-esteem? Secondly, is the social skill training for students with ADHD effective in reducing their carelessness, hyperactivity and impulsive character? Thirdly, is the social skill training for students with ADHD effective in improving peer relations? Subjects were six 5th grade children who were selected by the ADHD-SC4 at P elementary school in Pyeongtaek. The social skill training consisted of 10 sessions which included forming friendship, recognizing, making friends, solving problems, reeducation and evaluation. Qualitative data were collected through self-esteem inventory, peer-relation test, self-reported scales for children and Conners' Teacher rating score for ADHD children. The collected data were analysed with t-test. Qualitative data were collected though teacher's interview and observation an the children. The results of the study were follows: First, the social skill training did not give a significant effect in enhancing the self-esteem of the children with ADHD. Second, the social skill training had a positive effect in reducing in attentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsive behavior of the children with ADHD. Third, the social skill training did not give a significant effect in improving the peer relations of the children with ADHD. Fourth the qualitative data showed that the social skill training had positive effect in enhancing over all classroom behavior.
This study intended to provide fundamental data to take countermeasures against recurrent stress by analyzing the health-related quality of life and factors for recurrent stress of alcohol dependents. Structured questionnaire was prepared for patients who quitted drinking after they had been hospitalized for alcohol dependence to take medical treatment but suffered recurrence, and analysis on health-related quality of life and environmental factors with drinking risk was conducted. The quality of life was at a relatively satisfactory level, where pain was found at the highest level and general health condition was found at the lowest level. Environmental factors with drinking risk were found to be a moderate level, drinking for the reason of family and friends in terms of complications with other persons was found to be highest, and then job, self control, bad emotions, and social pressure on drinking were found in order. For health-related quality of life, the quality of life was found to be high in case of the only son, professional job, well-educated persons, and no history of hospitalization. Regarding factors for recurrent stress, stress was found to be high in case of the eldest son and being without religion, and the lower was the quality of life, the higher were recurrent stress and environmental factors with drinking risk. It was found that demographic factors including age, marriage, and job influenced the recurrence of alcohol dependence, and factors for recurrent stress, etc. also influenced recurrent alcohol dependence with drinking risks. Specially, the lower was the quality of life, the higher were factors for recurrent stress, and drinking risks, therefore measures to improve the quality of life are required to be taken to prevent alcohol dependence from recurrence.
Purpose: The mental health during the elementary school years is important to develop overall healthy behaviors and well adapt to society. So as to provide basic data for comprehensive health education programs, we investigated the state of mental health problems and health promotion behaviors among rural elementary school students, along with the relationship between the two factors. Methods: In total, 421 5th and 6th grade students were recruited to answer a self-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire was composed of questions about general demographic characteristics, 4 items over mental health-interpersonal vulnerability, depression, anxiety, hostility-, and 5 items over health behaviors-general health habits, computer addiction, accident prevention, infection prevention, and mental health-. The participation rate was 96%(407/421). Results: 1) The mean and the standard deviation of mental health problems were as follows; interpersonal sensitivity $2.06{\pm}0.70$, hostility $1.88{\pm}0.73$, depression $1.74{\pm}0.69$, anxiety $1.72{\pm}0.66$. 2) The mean and the standard deviation of health-promoting behaviors were as follows; prevention of infectious diseases $3.37{\pm}0.47$, hygiene and daily-life habit $3.09{\pm}0.41$, mental health $2.81{\pm}0.51$, accident prevention $2.79{\pm}0.57$, computer usage and health $2.61{\pm}0.56$. 3) Students with high academic performance, good relationships with friends and teachers, high household economic status, and good family relation, showed higher scores in health-promoting behaviors. 4) Higher scores in mental health problems were significantly correlated with lower scores in health-promoting behaviors. Conclusion: In developing comprehensive school health programs, it is necessary to find ways to improve both health promoting behaviors and mental health problems.
This research attempts to identify N-screen users' motivational and dissatisfying factors in relation to their willingness for continued future use of the service. An on-line survey was conducted (N=558) to reveal five major factors for N-screen use: Medium usability (interface usability and daily usefulness), Socialness (potential for social use with family and friends), Mobility (use without restraints of time and space), Contents (diversity of contents catalogue and related information search), and Habitual use. With exception of Contents factor, four of those factors were proven to be meaningful predictors of the users' willingness for continued future use of N-screen service. Meanwhile, two factors were extracted as the major source for N-screen users' dissatisfaction: Customer service (dissatisfaction associated with the service itself) and Contents (dissatisfaction relating to contents use). The effect of those two dissatisfaction factors was examined. The results show that Contents dissatisfaction, in comparison with Customer service dissatisfaction, was a more powerful predictor for discontinuing of N-screen service use.
Due to the changes of modern society, alternative types of nuclear family so called as commuting family have appeared. Also, with the increase of women's economic participation and their needs of self-actualization, dual-career commuting family have increased. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether there is any difference between the traditional commuting family and dual-career commuting family in terms of family relation, types of child-care and social support. Also, this study qualitatively analysed parenting-guilty of the mothers of commuting family. One eight seven mothers of three to eight year-old participated the survey. The main results were as follows : (1) In case of traditional commuting family, children cohabit with the mother and usually fathers move between two houses. But among the dual-career commuting family, there are some children who cohabit with the father and some mothers who move. Dual-career commuting family relied on the more types of child-care than traditional commuting family. (2) While traditional commuting family get more support for child-rearing from the husband's family of origin than dual-career commuting family, wife's family of origin provide more support to the dual-career commuting family. The more support the husband's family of origin provide, the more stress both types of commuting family experience. However, there was no significant relationship between the support from the wife's family of origin or friends and the stress of the mothers of both types of commuting family. (3) Mothers of two types of commuting families were different regarding the motives of parenting-guilty Difficulty of caring the children for their job as well as father-absentness makes mothers of dual-career commuting family feel parenting-guilty more.
The purpose of this study is to examine the moderated mediation effects of parenting functioning on the relations between deviant peer's influences and delinquent behaviors in adolescence. To investigate the moderated mediation effects, simple slope test and bootstrapping method based on multiple linear regression(MLR) model were used. This study used data from wave 1-2(2003-2004) of the Korea Youth Panel Survey(KYPS). Results showed that poorer parenting increased the probability that adolescents would affiliated with deviant peers, and more association with deviant peers, in turn, was related to delinquency. There was statistical significant interaction between affiliation with deviant peers and parenting in the model for delinquency. It implied that the relation between deviant peers and delinquency depends on the quality of parenting. Finally, indirect effect of earlier parenting on delinquent behavior through affiliation with deviant peers was moderated by later parenting. These results help clarify the conditions under which exposure to parenting behaviors can buffer the negative effect of deviant best friends on delinquent behaviors in adolescence. Practice and policy implications as well as further research topic were discussed to aid the search for highly effective preventive and treatment interventions.
This descriptive research study was conducted to identify the connection between life stress and depression in nursing college students. The data was collected targeting 311 students at colleges of nursing from November 20, 2017 to December 5, 2017, and analyzed through the multiple linear regression analysis method using the SPSS 20.0 statistics program. The results of this study found that there was a difference between life stress and depression in relation to the college life satisfaction among general and health-related characteristics. The level of life stress was the highest in academic problems; and the level of depression was 16.52. According to the results of correlation analysis, all the domains of life stress showed a significantly positive correlation with depression. When it comes to the effects of life stress on depression, there was a significant difference in the relationship with friends and views of value, and the level of explanatory power was 36.2%. In conclusion, this study suggests the necessity of developing intervention programs to reduce life stress and conducting the follow-up studies which are designed to establish various predictors that may act as life stress in college nursing students, based on the results of the effects of life stress on depression in nursing college students.
This study investigated vegetable buying behavior with the subjects of 250 housewives living in Gyeongju. According to the results, they usually buy the following vegetables by order of frequency: cucumbers (152 times), hot peppers (142 times), lettuce (140 times), and spinach (134 times). The intake frequency of fresh vegetables was 2 to 3 times per week as 50.0% responded so. All respondents considered freshness most importantly when buying vegetables regardless of age. They usually buy vegetables at traditional markets, and they think the markets are suitable for buying fresh vegetables regardless of age. And the result of analyzing relation among vegetable's vitamin C and the colors or kinds of vegetables selected by age was not statistically significant. About the improvements to use vegetables, respondents in the 20's chose useful information, ones in the 30's to 40's said diverse recipes, ones in the 50's went for the quality improvement, and ones in the 60's or more emphasized stable prices. They answered that they received nutrition information of vegetables mainly from TV or magazines, newspapers, and mass media whereas subjects in the 60's or more said they got it from neighbors or friends. For housewives to get and practice nutritional knowledge, it is necessary to develop recipes in consideration of nutritional balance and convenience and provide them with constant education of nutrition through lifelong education facilities.
The purpose of this study is investigated on the loneliness of childhood and related variables. 400 boys and girls were sampled far this study that they are elementary school 5th 6th located in IK-San, Kim-Je city. Survey was conducted by self-reported questionnaires and 380 questionnaires were finally used for the data analysis. The data analysis with SPSS Computer program were frequency, percentage, mean, 7- 1est, one-way ANOVA with Duncan's Multiple Range test and Multiple Regression Analysis. The results of this study can be summarized as follows : 1. Significant difference was founded in children's loneliness according to father's education, father's job mother's education, school grade, name satisfaction, body satisfaction, siblings, close relation friend number, family harmony, parent's love- acceptable. 2. Significant difference was founded in children's loneliness according to peer status degree (popular isolation aggression). Higher popular children was perceived lower in loneliness than lower popular children. Higher isolation children was perceived higher in loneliness than lower isolation. Higher aggression children was perceived higher in loneliness than lower aggressive in loneliness. 3. In the result of multiple regression analysis the influence on the loneliness be presented as follows in order of importance , peer status of isolation degree popular degree mother's job of self business, parent's love-acceptable, friends number. The result the above study indicates that peer status family harmony, parent's love- acceptable, child's psychological environmental variables influences on the loneliness but essential variables are influences peer status on the loneliness.
