Effects of Emotionality, Interpersonal Problem Solving Strategies, and Maternal Behaviors on Children's Social Competence (아동의 사회적 유능성에 영향을 미치는 정서성, 대인간 문제 해결 전략 및 어머니 행동)

  • This study examined effects of children's emotionality, interpersonal problem solving strategies, and maternal behaviors during mother-child interaction on children's social competence as rated by teachers. Data were analyzed separately for boys and girls. A total of 102 children(60 boys, 42 girls; aged 5-6) and their mothers were studied. Children's positive and negative emotionality were related to their social competence. Positive solving strategies were positively related to boy's social competence; negative solving strategies had negative to both boy's and girl's social competence. Mother's negative affect related negatively to boy's social competence and mother's sensitivity/guidance related positively to girl's social competence. When children's emotionality and interpersonal problem solving strategies were controlled, maternal behaviors during mother-child interaction did not contribute to children's social competence.

Correlates of Peer Victimization : Personality Traits, Parent Attachment, and Marital Conflict (아동의 인성특성, 부모에 대한 애착 및 부부갈등과 또래괴롭힘)

  • In this study of the correlates of peer victimization, 584 $4^{th}$ grade children in Seoul answered questionnaires regarding their personality traits, parent attachment and the marital conflict of their parents. Subjects and their peers also reported on peer aggression and victimization by peers. Data were analyzed by partial correlation, controlling for gender. Children's sociability/activity related positively to peer-rated peer aggression and negatively to self- and peer-rated victimization by peers. Children's shyness/emotionality related positively to self-reported peer aggression and to self- and peer-rated victimization by peers. Parent attachment related negatively to self-reported peer aggression and victimization by peers and positively to peer-rated peer aggression. Marital conflict related positively to self-reported peer aggression and to self- and peer-rated victimization by peers. Marital conflict was the most influential on peer aggression and children's personality traits were on victimization by peers.

Social Behavior in Children and Early Adolescents : Relationships to Communication with Parents, Self-Esteem, and Depression (아동과 초기 청소년의 사회적 행동 : 부모와의 의사소통, 자아존중감 및 우울과의 관계)

  • The subjects of this study were 283 $6^{th}$ and $8^{th}$ grade students and their homeroom teachers. Data were analyzed by frequency, %, Pearson's, two-way ANOVA, and stepwise regression. Results showed that open communication with parents and self-esteem were positively related to social competence and negatively related to antisocial behavior. Depression was negatively related to social competence and positively related to antisocial behavior. The $8^{th}$ graders had higher scores than $6^{th}$ graders in antisocial behavior and lower levels of social competence and communication with parents. Girls were higher in social competence and communication with parents and lower in antisocial behavior than boys. Depression impacted social competence in girls, and communication with fathers impacted social competence in boys. Grade, open communication with fathers, and self-esteem had significant effects on the antisocial behavior in boys.

Social and Cognitive Play Patterns in Terms of Young Children's Cognitive Styles (유아의 장독립성-장의존성 인지양식에 따른 사회, 인지적 놀이형태에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in social play, cognitive play, and social-cognitive play patterns as related to young children's field independence-dependence cognitive styles. Sixteen field independent and sixteen field dependent children were selected from a group of 79 young children with the use of Preschool Embedded Figures Test(PEFT). Their social play, cognitive play, and social-cognitive play patterns were observed. The data collected for this study were analyzed by using SPSS/$PC^+$; frequency, percentage and ${\chi}^2$ test. The results of this study were that (1) difference of social play patterns as related to young children's field independence-dependence cognitive styles was not found, (2) differences were found in cognitive play patterns as related to young children's field independence-dependence cognitive styles, and (3) differences were found in social-cognitive play pattern as related to young children's field independence-dependence cognitive styles.

Relationships Between Children's Moral Judgement, Moral Emotions and Moral Behavior (유아의 도덕적 판단력, 도덕적 감정과 도덕적 행동의 관계)

  • In this study of the relationship between moral judgment, moral emotions and moral behavior, 137 five-year-olds were interviewed to measure moral judgment and moral emotions. Their teachers measured children's moral behavior. Results showed that children judged moral and conventional rules by using the 4 criterion judgments of seriousness, rule contingency, generalizability and punishment. Children with highly felt moral emotions had higher scores in moral behavior. Moral judgment, moral emotions and moral behavior were highly interrelated. Children's moral behavior was related to rule contingency and generalizability. Their moral behavior was highly related to positive moral emotions. Positive moral emotions were related to the rule contingency and generalizability. Negative moral emotions were highly related to seriousness and punishment.

  • This study investigated the effects of family related cooking programs on young children's basic science concepts and mathematics abilities. Subjects were 24 five-year-old children, 12 each for the experimental and the control group. Examinations of basic science concepts and mathematics abilities were applied to determine the homogeneity of the two groups. The 23 cooking activities, 12 for kindergarten and 11 for each child's home, were applied to the experimental group for six-week periods. The results of this study were that the family related cooking programs were effective in the formation of children's basic science concepts and children's mathematics abilities.

  • A sample of 578 adolescents responded to self-report questionnaires. Results showed that parental education levels and occupation and adolescent perceptions of their socioeconomic status were positively related to maternal expectations. Adolescent perceptions of their socioeconomic status were related to maternal emotional support and adolescent self-esteem. Adolescent achievement motives were positively related to parental education levels and adolescent perceptions of their socioeconomic status. Maternal expectations/emotional support and adolescent perceptions of their socioeconomic status were positively related to adolescent achievement motivation. Maternal expectations played a mediating role between parental educational levels and adolescent perceptions of their socioeconomic status and adolescent achievement motives. Maternal emotional support and adolescent self-esteem played mediating roles between adolescent perceptions of their socioeconomic status and achievement motives.

Psychological Independence of Adolescents : Influences of Mothers' Attachment Experience, Psychological Control Behavior, and Adolescents' Attachment (어머니의 애착경험 및 심리적 통제행동과 어머니에 대한 청소년의 애착이 청소년의 심리적 독립성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study examined influences of mothers' attachment experience and separation-anxious psychological control and of adolescents' attachment on adolescents' psychological independence. Participants were 302 high school students (106 boys; 196 girls) and their mothers. Data were collected via questionnaires. Data analyses were by Pearson's correlation and Hierarchical Multiple Regression. Results showed that 1) Mothers' attachment experience with their mothers was positively related to girls' attachment to their mothers; mothers' separation-anxious psychological control was negatively related to adolescents' attachment. 2) Adolescents' attachment to their mothers predicted their emotional and functional psychological independence negatively. 3) Mothers' psychological control was negatively related to functional independence of boys but positively related to emotional independence of both boys and girls.

The Influence of Gender Schema on Children's Preference for Gender Related Tasks (성과 관련된 과제의 선호에서의 성 도식의 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate children's conceptions about gender and the relation between gender conceptions and preference for gender related tasks. 130 children were interviewed about gender and gender related tasks. Data were analyzed with the component model of gender schema. Results indicated that children's gender schema in the attitudes domain was significantly different with age in all components but not different with sex. The gender schema in the knowledge domain was significantly different with age in within component and between component links, and with sex in the gender label-component and within component links. The difference between the gender inhibitory score and gender facilitative score was significantly different with age, sex, and children's gender schema. The findings that gender schema influenced the children's preferences for gender related tasks suggests a theoretical rationale of gender schema theory.

Behavioral Inhibition as a Function of Child's Early Emotionality, Parenting, and Mother-Child Attachment (아동의 초기 정서성, 양육행동 및 모자녀 애착과 남·여 아동의 행동억제간의 관계)

  • In this study of 79 3- and 4-year-old children, behavioral inhibition was assessed by their preschool teachers; mother-child attachment was assessed by the researchers in home visits; and mothers reported on their parenting and their child's emotionality at 6-12 months of age. Findings were that insecure attachment was related to high child's distress reactions to limitations (negative emotionality) in early infancy and to strong maternal rejection/hostility. Higher maternal sensitivity to child's inhibition was related to more secure attachment. Girls were more highly inhibited than boys. Smiling and laughter (positive emotionality) in early infancy was negatively related to child's inhibited behavior. Maternal sensitivity to child inhibition was positively related to child's inhibited behavior. Findings are consistent with Engfer's (1993) theory of gender differences in developmental paths into behavioral inhibition.
