  • Objectives : This paper aims to suggest an integrated explanation for the contrary reinforcing/reducing effects of Shaoyao. Methods : From a list of books on the history of herbology and Chinese Medicine as mentioned in the herbology textbook, main texts were selected for further examination, along with some books of the Four Masters of the Jin Yuan period and some general medical texts. These texts were thoroughly examined with keywords such as Shaoyao, Baishaoyao, Chishaoyao, Baishao, Chishao, out of which contents on reinforcing and reducing were selected and analyzed. Next, explanations of the mechanisms of the contrary effects that were found through categorization of the reinforcing and reducing effects were examined. Among the contrary effects, similarities were uncovered and further studied for deduction of an encompassing higher level mechanism. Results & Conclusions : Overall consideration of the contrary effects of Shaoyao revealed that its working mechanism is to collect qi in the yin-blood part through convergence to control qi among blood, to help smooth flow of blood, eliminate blood stagnation and reinforce blood production which in turn cools down heat.

  • Rock bolt is one of the most important supports for tunnelling to prevent excessive ground relaxation at the primary tunnel excavation stage. It forms a ground arch band by confining the ground around a tunnel. Rock bolt has various effects, such as support or hanging effect, internal pressure effect, arching effect, ground improvement effect etc. Most studies on rock bolt focused on the concept of support, but only a few researches on the ground reinforcing effect by pre-tensioning a rock bolts. In this study, large scale model tests are performed to investigate the ground reinforcing effect of rock bolts for regularly jointed rocks. Simple beam model was built to find out the reinforcing effect of jointed rocks, which was reinforced by pre-tensioned rock bolts. Settlement of model beam was analyzed through measuring its sagging for various installation intervals.

  • Among several splicing system of reinforcing bar, the grout-filled splice sleeve system has been applied widely. However, as the splice sleeve for high strength rebar as SD500 is not yet made in korea, the development of splice sleeve for high strength reinforcing bar are required as soon as possible. It is the purpose of this study to develop the steel pipe sleeve for high strength rebar as SD500 and estimate its structural performance by monotonic loading test. The experimental variables adopted in this study are the development length of rebars, types of sleeve etc. The results of this study showed that the developed steel pipe splice sleeve system for high strength reinforcing bar as SD500 retained the structural performance required in domestic, ACI and AIJ criteria. And it is considered that the study result presented in this paper can be helpful in developing reasonable design method of steel pipe splice sleeve system for high strength reinforcing bar as SD500.

  • In this paper, strength and leaching characteristics of water sludge-added lightweight soils(WALS) considering reinforcing materials(waste fishing net, glue treated waste fishing net and geogrid) and layer(1 or 2 layer) were investigated using unconfined compression test and leaching test. Several specimens of water sludge-added lightweight soil consisted of water sludge, cement, and bottom ash were prepared according to flowability. Reinforcing material added into these specimens were waste fishing net and geogrid. A glue treated waste fishing net was also added in order to increase interlocking between soil mixture and waste fishing net. Strength increased in the order of WALS reinforced by waste fishing net, glue treated waste fishing net, and geogrid. Strength of specimen with double layer-reinforcing material was greater than that of specimen with single layer reinforcing material. Leaching result of WALS was also satisfied with standard of ministry of environment.

  • In concrete slab track, the signal current using wayside transmitter of ATP (Automatic Train Protection) system is influenced by reinforcing bars. The magnetic coupling between reinforcing bars and wayside transmitter of ATP system as a filter makes an input current distorted. So, it makes an alternating current signal with a desirable size not transmit to on-board system of a train. Way to decrease the distortion of an input current signal frequency is to avoid maximum induction current frequency. And the induction phenomenon between reinforcing bars insulated and wayside transmitter of ATP system does not occur. In this paper, we represent the model about wayside transmitter of ATP system and reinforcing bars on the concrete slab tracks, and calculated the parameters demanded for the model. Also, we demonstrated it through the Maxwell program. Furthermore, we calculated impedance on wayside transmitter used in KVB system and ERTMS/ETCS system which are a kind of ATP system, frequency response of induction current, using Matlab, and demonstrated the validity of it, using PSpice program.

  • The slope stability method using the soil stabilizer is a way to ensure that the slope stability from reinforcing method is environmentally friendly. However, the reinforcing method does not ensure slope stability for lack of research on the reinforcement effect of the mixture with soil. So the application of this method implies difficult technical issues. In this research, reinforcement effect is investigated according to the different ratio of mixture. And the optimum reinforcement depth is proposed according to the height of slope from numerical analysis. The results show that approximately the soil strength increases from two to three times. From numerical analysis, it is possible to estimate the optimum height according to the height of slope. It is anticipated that the use of soil stabilizer will increase the slope stability.

  • This study analyzed ground settlement and ground stress depending on tunnel excavation and the ground reinforcing grouting methods for double line road tunnel through deep weathered zone. Diameter of double line road tunnel was approximately 12m and umbrella arch method and side wall reinforcing grouting were applied. The ring-cut split excavation method and CD-cut excavation method for excavation method were applied. Analyses of failure rate and vertical stress ratio show that the tunnel for which the height of the cover (H) was higher than four times the diameter, can be considered a deep tunnel. Comparisons of various excavation and ground reinforcement methods showed that CD-cut method results in lower surface and crown settlement, and lower failure rate than that obtained by Ring-cut split method. In addition, the side wall reinforcing grouting resulted in reduction of tunnel displacement and settlement.

  • Micropiled raft has been used to support the existing and new structures or to provide the seismic reinforcement of foundation systems. Recently, research on micropile or micropiled raft has been actively conducted as the usage of micropile has increased, and the reinforcement effect of pile for the raft, the pile installation methods, and methods for calculating the bearing capacity of micropiled raft have been proposed. In addition, existing research results show that the behavior of this foundation system is different depending on the pile conditions and can be greatly influenced by the characteristics of the upper or lower ground depending on the conditions of pile. In other words, considering that the micropile is a friction pile, it can be predicted that the reinforcing effect of micropile for the raft and the bearing capacity of micropiled raft may depend on the cohesion of upper soil layer depending on the pile conditions. However, existing studies have limitations in that they were conducted without taking this into account. However, existing studies have limitations as they have been conducted without considering these characteristics. Accordingly, this study investigated the reinforcing effect of micropile and the bearing characteristics of micropiled raft by varying the cohesion of upper soil layer and the stiffness of pile which affect the behavior of micropiled raft. In this results, the reinforcing effect of micropile on the raft also increased as the cohesion of soil layer increased, but the reinforcing effect of pile was more effective in ground conditions with decreased the cohesion. In addition, the relationship between the axial stiffness of micropile and the bearing capacity of micropiled raft was found to be a logarithmic linear relationship. It was found that the reinforcing effect of micropile can increase the bearing capacity of raft by 1.33~ 3.72 times depending on the cohesion of soil layer and the rigidity of pile.

  • Service life of concrete structures that are exposed to the environmental attack is largely influenced by the corrosion of reinforcing bare due to the chloride contamination. Chloride ions penetrate continuously into concrete from the environment, and chloride diffusion velocity is governed by a mechanical steady stage. In this study, a method is developed to predict corrosion initiation of reinforcing bars in the sea-shore structures, based on governing equations that take into account the diffusing of chloride ions and a mechanical steady state. As a result of this study, Corrosion Prediction System (CPS) is developed, and it can be used to determine an optimal time for repair and rehabilitation actions need to be taken. Futhermore, CPS assists the concrete mixing structures by predicting of chloride concentrations in concrete mixture, exposed to salt concentrations and service environment.

  • The reinforcing effects of ductile short-fiber reinforced brittle matrix composites are studied by, measuring flexural strength, fracture toughness and impact energy as functions of fiber volume fraction and length. The parameters of fracture mechanics, K and J are applied to assess fracture toughness and bridging stress. It is found that fracture toughness is greatly, influenced by the bridging stress ill which fiber pull-out is occur. For the reinforcing effects as functions of fiber volume fraction($V_f$ = 1, 2, 3 %) and length(L = 3, 6. 10cm), the flexural strength is maximum at $V_f$ = 1% and both fracture toughness.
