  • We investigated the effect of weld details on fatigue behavior of a material, JIS SM 490 A, with yielding strength of about 350 MPa and tensile strength of about 520 MPa. Tensile tests, instrumented indentation tests and fatigue tests were carried out on double V-grooved butt weld plates such as reinforcement removed, as-welded and weld toe ground. In addition plates with transverse fillet welded web, load carrying cruciform fillet welded plates, non-load-carrying cruciform fillet welded plates and longitudinal butt welded plates were tested. S-N curves for the above specimens were obtained and analyzed

  • Ferro-cement is a composite material made of portland cement mortar and wire(or chicken wire) reinforcement. In most cases, as a shipbuilding material, reinforcing steel rods and steel pipes are also used. This report will review the technique of ferro-cement boat building and will guide the working details. Beyond these, this report will present some test results of the ferro-cement test pannels and will compare those with the other well known shipbuilding material. As a matter of fact ferro-cement application to the shipbuilding material is quite not a new theory. There were already lots of case studies and actual ship building applications. But the technique to do this is not easily available to the interested persons and amateur shipbuilders. Therefore this report will stress most its "state-of-the-art review" and give kind guidance in using ferro-cement as a shipbuilding material. For the more interested research worker, technical references as much as listable are printed in the bibliography section on this report.

  • In this study, a moment resisting precast concrete beam-column connection is proposed. An experimental study was carried out to investigate the connection behavior subjected to cyclic loading. Three precast beam-column interior connections and one monolithic connection were tested. Variable included the detailing used at the joint to achieve structural constructability and the location of mild steel reinforcement and high strength bar. During specimen fabrication, the joint details enables ease and speed of construction. Connection performance is evaluated on the basis of ductility, energy dissipation capacity, connection strength, and drift capacity. Based on test results, the precast concrete beam-column connection is capable of matching or exceeding the performance of the monolithic connection.

  • Due to the bond failure of lap-spliced longitudinal bars very brittle failure is conducted in existing RC columns. This failure can be, however, prevented by providing partial lap spliced longitudinal bars. But the deformability of columns having various lateral confinements is not confirmed yet. In this study scale models with different confinements were tested to investigate characteristics of seismic behaviors. It was confirmed that deformability was increased dramatically with increase of lateral reinforcements.

  • The bridge columns with lap-splice reinforcements in earthquake suffered a brittle bond-slip failure due to the deterioration of lap-spliced longitudinal reinforcement without developing its flexural capacity or ductility. In this case, such a brittle failure can be controlled by the seismic retrofit using FRP wrapping. The retrofitted columns using FRP laminated circular tube showed significant improvement in seismic performance due to FRP's confinement effect. This paper presents the circumferential confinement effect of existing circular bridge pier strengthened with FRP wrapping for poor lap-splice details. The effects on the confinement of FRP wrapping, such as gap lengths between footing and FRP, fiber orientations, and thicknesses of FRP, were investigated by Quasi-static experiments.

  • The behavior of pile-deck connections of pile-supported marginal wharfs subjected to earthquake loading is of key importance to ensure a good performance of this type of structures. Two precast-pretensioned pile-deck connections used in the construction of pile-supported marginal wharfs were tested under cyclic loading. The first is a connection with simple reinforcement details and light steel ratio developed for use where moderate pile-deck rotation demands are expected in the wharf. The second is specifically developed to sustain the large rotation, shear force and bending moment demands, as required for the shortest piles in a marginal wharf. Data obtained from the test program is used in the paper to calibrate an equivalent plastic hinge length that can be incorporated into nonlinear analysis models of these structures when prestressed pile-deck connections with duct embedded dowels are used.

  • The seismic performance of existing reinforced concrete (RC) elements to which seismic design was not applied is questionable. To evaluate the behavior of existing RC columns, column specimens with widely spaced transverse reinforcement and 90-degree hoop anchor hooks as variables were designed. Experimental tests were performed by applying a fixed low axial load and increasing lateral cyclic loads to the specimens. As a result, the hoop spacing and anchor hook angle did not significantly affect the load-displacement relationship and the dissipated energy before failure.

  • Many older reinforced concrete (RC) buildings were constructed and designed with only gravity loads in mind. Columns in those buildings have insufficient reinforcement details that do not satisfy the requirements specified in current seismic design standards. This study aims to develop drift-based fragility functions for lightly RC columns. For this purpose, a database of 193 lightly RC columns was constructed to determine central and dispersion values of drift ratios for individual damage states. Additionally, to develop more accurate fragility functions of the columns, the failure mode of RC columns was incorporated into fragility functions. The classification procedure for column failure mode is proposed in this study. Fragility functions for older RC columns are constructed according to four different damage states. The main variables of the fragility functions proposed in this study are column properties and failure mode.

  • concrete deck bridges are increasingly aplied to twin- girder bridges and open-stel box girder bridges. One of the most dificult isues in the design of shear conect ors is the mater of achieving ful composite action. Many connectors in smal area require a significant section los of precast decks resulting in difficult reinforcement details. In this closer spacing than the required minimum spacing in the design codes was evaluated through static tests. Test results s howed that the ultimate strength decreased as the conector spacing was reduced. The strength enhancement was observed due to aditional reinforcement for precast slabs or for shear pockets. Thus, the design of group stud shear connection needs to anticipate failure modes and the conector failure should be induced. Based on the test results, an empirical equation consi dering stud spacing was proposed to evaluate the ultimate strength of group stud shear conection. Fatigue tests showed n o reduction in fatigue life of the group stud shear conection in the range of this research. Details of the precast decks wer e enhanced using the findings of the study.

  • The objective of this paper is to look into the possibility of the detailed and practical optimum design of rt:inforced concrete beam using methods oi discrete mathematical programming. In this discrete optimum formulation, the design variables are the overall depth, width and effective depth of members, and area of longitudinal reinforcement. In addition, the details such as the amount of web reinforcement and cutoff points of longitudinal reinforcement are also considered as variables. Total cost has been used as the objective function. The constraints include the code requirments such as flexural strength, shear strength, ductility, serviceability, concrete cover. spacing, web reinforcement, and development length and cutoff points of longitudinal renforcement. An optimization algorithm is presented for effective optimum design of R.C. beam with discrete de sign variables. First, the continuous variable optimization can be achieved by Feasible Direction Method. Using the results obtained from the continuous variable optimization, a branch and bound method is used to obtained the discrete design values. The proposed algorithm is applied to test problem for reliability, and the results are compared with those of graphical method and rounded-up method. And a simply supported R.C. beam and a two-span continuous R.C. beam are presented as numerical examples for effectiveness and applicability. It is considered that the presented algorithm can be effectively applied to the discrete optimum design of R.C. beams.
