Reinforced concrete is in general, known as high durability construction material under normal environments due to strong alkalinity of cement. It is, however, well known that moderate or minor cracks in reinforced concrete should be most serious causes to deteriorate the durability of RC structures. Futhermore, chloride contents penetrating through unexpected cracks in reinforced concrete bridges get to weaken corrosion resistance of reinforcement steel in concrete and then to accelerate the deterioration of concrete durability. The objective of this experimental research is 1) to evaluate the effect of various corrosion protection systems for reinforced concrete specimens with moderate or minor cracks which are exposed to cyclic wet and dry seawater, and then 2) to develop effective corrosion protection systems for reinforced concrete bridges under the exposure of various detrimental environments such as seawater, deicing and etc.
Aluminum alloy matrix may be used for manufacturing lighter automobiles. However, galvanic corrosion may occur between the rivet joint combining aluminum alloy matrix and a CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic) laminate. The possibility of galvanic corrosion may be investigated by measuring galvanic couple currents. Two types of galvanic current measuring methods were used. One method is to use potentiodynamic polarization curves and the other is the ZRA (zero resistance ammeter) method. For galvanic corrosion experiments graphite, a major component of CFRP, was used with carbon steel (rivets) and 6061 aluminum alloys. Regardless of carbon steel, Ni deposited carbon steel, and 316L stainless steels we also investigated the possibility of reduction in galvanic corrosion. Results revealed that even though Ni deposited carbon steel or 316L stainless rivet may slightly increase galvanic current density between those and Al matrix, substitute rivets for carbon steel may be considerably useful for reducing overall galvanic corrosion.
Corrosion of the rebar embedded in concrete has a fundamental role in the determination of life and durability of the concrete structures. Researches have demonstrated that artificial neural networks (ANNs) can effectively predict issues such as expected damage in concrete structures in marine environment caused by chloride penetration, the potential of steel embedded in concrete under the influence of chloride, the corrosion of the steel embedded in concrete and corrosion current density in steel reinforced concrete. In this study, data from different kind of concrete under the influence of chloride ion, are analyzed using the neural network and it is concluded that this method is able to predict the bond strength between the concrete and the steel reinforcement in mentioned condition with high reliability.
As the main lateral load resisting system in high-rise reinforced concrete structures, the mechanical performance of shear wall has a significant impact on the structure, especially for high-rise buildings. Steel corrosion has been recognized as an important factor affecting the mechanical performance and durability of the reinforced concrete structures. To investigate the effect on the seismic behaviour of corroded reinforced concrete shear wall induced by corrosion, analytical investigations and simulations were done to observe the effect of corrosion on the ultimate seismic capacity and drift capacity of shear walls. To ensure the accuracy of the simulation software, several validations were made using both non-corroded and corroded reinforced concrete shear walls based on some test results in previous literature. Thereafter, a parametric study, including 200 FE models, was done to study the influence of some critical parameters on corroded structural shear walls with boundary element. These parameters include corrosion levels, axial force ratio, aspect ratio, and concrete compressive strength. The results obtained would then be used to propose equations to predict the seismic resistance and drift capacity of shear walls with various corrosion levels.

The purpose of this syudy is to set up a proper repair plan and to extend the remaining lifetime of them by measuring the remaining lifetime of reinforced concrete structures quantitatively. This method is based on the actual research on age deterioration, carbonation depth and covering depth of the reinforced concrete structures. Also, it measure the remaining lifetime through quantitatively defining the probability of steel corrosion by the damage of steel corrosion. By doing that, we proceed the proper repair plan after reviewing the possibility of lifetime extension.

In this study, an unified algorithm for the degradation analysis which considers the cracks in concrete and steel corrosion is developed and implemented into finite element analysis program. Using the program, degradation analysis on reinforced concrete structures subjected to chloride attacks was carried out with time by considering the cracks and the steel corrosion and cracking due to expansion of corroded reinforcing bars. The analytical procedure proposal in this study can be used quantitative evaluation of degradation and service life prediction.

When the concrete is subjected to chloride attack or carbonation, the passive steel normally initiate corrosion. By product of corrosion make volume of concrete expand 3 to 8 times and induce the stress which lead cracking and spalling of concrete. It result in the loss of the integrity of the concrete structures. Several corrosion inhibitors imported from America, Japan and Europe are currently being used to repair the concrete structures in Korea. However, questions has been raised for protective effect of the corrosion inhibitors which applied in steel reinforced concrete structures. Therefore, we investigated the influence of type and amount of corrosion inhibitors through the tests immersing in salty water. In addition, we developed the corrosion inhibitive agent treating to surface of concrete structures for improving resistance to penetration and corrosion of the steel reinforcement.
Chloride induced reinforcement corrosion is widely accepted to be the most frequent mechanism causing premature degradation of reinforced concrete members, whose economic and social consequences are growing up continuously. Prevention of these phenomena has a great importance in structural design, and modern Codes and Standards impose prescriptions concerning design details and concrete mix proportion for structures exposed to different external aggressive conditions, grouped in environmental classes. This paper focuses on reinforced concrete column section load carrying capacity degradation over time due to chloride induced steel pitting corrosion. The structural element is considered to be exposed to marine environment and the effects of corrosion are described by the time degradation of the axial-bending interaction diagram. Because chlorides ingress and consequent pitting corrosion propagation are both time-dependent mechanisms, the study adopts a time-variant predictive approach to evaluate residual strength of corroded reinforced concrete columns at different lifetimes. Corrosion initiation and propagation process is modelled by taking into account all the parameters, such as external environmental conditions, concrete mix proportion, concrete cover and so on, which influence the time evolution of the corrosion phenomenon and its effects on the residual strength of reinforced concrete columns sections.
Twenty-two corrosion-damaged columns were simulated through accelerated steel corrosion tests. Eight specimens were directly tested to failure under axial load, and the remaining specimens were tested after concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) strengthening. This study aimed to investigate the damage of RC columns after corrosion and their restoration and enhancement after strengthening. The research parameters included different corrosion degrees of RC columns, diameter-to-thickness ratio of steel tube and the strengthening concrete strength. Experimental results showed that CFST strengthening method could change the failure mode of corrosion-damaged RC columns from brittleness to ductility. In addition to the bearing capacity provided by the strengthening materials, it can also provide an extra 26.7% amplification because of the effective confinement provided by steel tubes. The influence of corrosion on reinforcement and concrete was quantitatively analysed and considered in the design formula. The proposed formula accurately predicted the bearing capacity of the strengthened columns with a maximum error of only 7.68%.
Steel corrosion in reinforced concrete structures leads to concrete cover cracking, reduction of bond strength, and reduction of steel cross section. Among theses consequences mentioned, reduction of bond strength between reinforcement and concrete is of great importance to study the behaviour of RC members with corroded reinforcement. In this paper, firstly, an analytical model based on smeared cracking and average stress-strain relationship of concrete in tension is proposed to evaluate the maximum bursting pressure development in the cover concrete for noncorroded bar. Secondly, the internal pressure caused by the expansion of the corrosion products is evaluated by treating the cracked concrete as an orthotropic material. Finally, bond strength for corroded reinforcing bar is calculated and compared with test results.
