In the present study, the application of a method of anchored or waste tyre wall in reinforcing the unstable slope is investigated. For design purposes a method of external stability analysis of the reinforced slope, together with a method of internal stability analysis of a wall itself, is presented. In order to predict the passive resistance expected in the anchor or waste tyre Meyerhof's bearing capacity theory is moapaed and experimental results of stress distribution of a pile section under lateral loading is used. Hurray's pull-out teat results are compared with the passive resistances of anchors predicted by the proposed method, and alto the advantages in design are compared with a method of reinforced earth wall with steel strips. Finally a design example of reinforced slope using anchored or caste tyre wall is presented and the overall stability is analyzed in detail by the proposed method of analysis. The efficiency of a method of anchored or waste tyre wall is further analyzed, comparing with a method of changing geometry of the origin리 unstable slope.
This paper presents an investigation on bearing capacity, load-settlement behavior and safety factor of rock-soil slopes reinforced using geogrid-box method (GBM). To this end, small-scale laboratory studies were carried out to study the load-settlement response of a circular footing resting on unreinforced and reinforced rock-soil slopes. Several parameters including unit weight of rock-soil materials (loose- and dense-packing modes), slope height, location of footing relative to the slope crest, and geogrid tensile strength were studied. A series of finite element analysis were conducted using ABAQUS software to predict the bearing capacity behavior of slopes. Limit equilibrium and finite element analysis were also performed using commercially available software SLIDE and ABAQUS, respectively to calculate the safety factor. It was found that stabilization of rock-soil slopes using GBM significantly improves the bearing capacity and settlement behavior of slopes. It was established that, the displacement contours in the dense-packing mode distribute in a broader and deeper area as compared with the loose-packing mode, which results in higher ultimate bearing load. Moreover, it was found that in the loose-packing mode an increase in the vertical pressure load is accompanied with an increase in the soil settlement, while in the dense-packing mode the load-settlement curves show a pronounced peak. Comparison of bearing capacity ratios for the dense- and loose-packing modes demonstrated that the maximum benefit of GBM is achieved for rock-soil slopes in loose-packing mode. It was also found that by increasing the slope height, both the initial stiffness and the bearing load decreases. The results indicated a significant increase in the ultimate bearing load as the distance of the footing to the slope crest increases. For all the cases, a good agreement between the laboratory and numerical results was observed.
Significant research efforts were undertaken to evaluate seismic performance of vertically irregular buildings on flat ground. However, there is scarcity of study on seismic performance of buildings on hill slopes. The present study attempts to investigate seismic behaviour of reinforced concrete irregular stepback building frames with different configurations on sloping ground. Based on extensive regression study of free vibration results of four hundred seventeen frames with varying ground slope, number of story and span number, a modification is proposed to the code based empirical fundamental time period estimation formula. The modification to the fundamental time period estimation formula is a simplified function of ground slope and a newly introduced equivalent height parameter to reflect the effect of stiffness and mass irregularity. The derived empirical formula is successfully validated with various combinations of slope and framing configurations of buildings. The correlation between the predicted and the actual time period obtained from the free vibration analysis results are in good agreement. The various statistical parameters e.g., the root mean square error, coefficient of determination, standard average error generally used for validation of such regression equations also ensure the prediction capability of the proposed empirical relation with reasonable accuracy.

Early detection of premonitory symptom of slope movement ensures tremendous saving of lives and repair costs from catastrophic disaster. Therefore, it is essential to constantly monitor the performance and integrity of both reinforced and un-reinforced cut slopes. We developed a novel monitoring system by using tension wire sensors. It's advantages are highly sensitivity, simple installation, large displacement measurement, durability of system, capability of remote sensing. Real-time measurement of slope surface movement is shown graphically and it gives a warning when the monitored value exceeds a given threshold level so that any sign of abnormal slope movement can be easily perceived.

This paper presents a case history of a geosynthetics-reinforced segmental retaining wall, which collapsed during a sever rainfall immediately after the completion of the wall construction. In an attempt to identify possible causes for the collapse, a comprehensive investigation was carried out including physical and strength tests on the backfill, stability analyses on the as-built design based on the current design approaches, and slope stability analyses with pore pressure consideration. The investigation revealed that the inappropriate as-built design and the bad-quality backfill were mainly responsible for the collapse. This paper describes the site condition including wall design, details of the results of investigation and finally, lessons learned. Practical significance of the findings from this study is also discussed.

This study presents a groundbreaking analytical approach to find an exact solution for the bearing capacity of strip footings on reinforced slopes, utilizing the two-phase approach and slip line method. The two-phase approach is considered as a generalized homogenization technique. The slip line method is leveraged to derive the stress field as a lower bound solution and the velocity field as an upper bound solution, thereby facilitating the attainment of an exact solution. The key finding points out the variation of the bearing capacity factor Nγ with influencing factors including the backfill soil friction angle, the footing setback distance from the slope crest edge, slope angle, strength, and volumetric fraction of inclusion layers. The results are evaluated by comparing them with those of relevant studies in the literature considering analytical and experimental studies. Through the application of the two-phase approach, it becomes feasible to determine the tensile loads mobilized along the inclusion layers associated with the failure zone. It is attempted to demonstrate the results by utilizing non-dimensional graphs to clearly illustrate variable impacts on reinforced soil stability. This research contributes significantly to advancing geotechnical engineering practices, specifically in the realm of static design considerations for reinforced soil structures.
This paper presents a field study of the stability of slope collapsed during road construction and proposes a reasonable countermeasure if the current slope is unstable. As a result of slope investigation, it was found that the slope includes five tension cracks and the sliding surface is started from the tension crack and propagated the surface soil layer through weathered rock layer. The slope stability analyses are conducted in case of dry and rainfall seasons. The results indicate that the slope is unstable status. A reinforcement method of slope failure should be selected according to the scale of failure. That is, the scale of slope failure, which is classified small, middle and large size determines the reinforcement method of slope. Since the slope interested in this study is large size failure slope, the reinforcement method to control slope failure is selected stabilizing piles, and seed spray and drainage of surface waterare also selected to remain the factor of safety. The SLOPILE (Ver. 3.0) program is applied in order to do stability analysis of slope reinforced by piles. As the result of analysis, the slope reinforced by a row of piles shows the stable state. It is clearly confirmed that the stabilizing of piles can improve the stability of slope.
This paper presents a laboratory investigation on the failure mechanism of geosynthetic reinforced slopes using 1/5-scale reduced model. The components of the model were selected with due consideration of the similitude law and the step-by-step actual wall construction procedure was closely simulated. The model tests successfully replicated the failure mechanism with relative density, slope and vertical spacing.

A numerical comparison or predictions by limit equilibrium analysis and 3n analysis is presented for slope/pile system. Special attention is given to the coupled analysis based on the explicit-finite-difference code, FLAC. To this end, an internal routine (FISH) was developed to calculate a factor of safety for a pile-reinforced slope according to shear strength reduction technique. The case of coupled analyses was performed for stabilizing piles in slope in which the pile response and slope stability are considered simultaneously and subsequently the factors of safety are compared to uncoupled analysis (limit equilibrium analysis) solution for a homogeneous slope. Based on a limited parametric study, it is shown that in the free-head condition the factor of safety in slope is more conservative for a coupled analysis than for an uncoupled analysis and a definitely larger value represents when piles are installed in the middle of the slopes and are restrained in the pile head.
