An infernally confined hollow reinforced concrete pier (ICH RC pier) is hollow RC pier which has a internal steel tube to enhance its ductility and stiffness by internal confinement. In this study, the internal steel tube were changed to investigate the behavior of ICH RC pier. The behavior of internally confined hollow reinforced concrete piers were evaluated with safety ratio, ductility, total material cost, the total weight of the pier, etc. As a result of analytical study, the usage of a minimum necessary thickness of the internal steel tube the most effective. The ICH RC pier has decrease of weight compare to Solid RC pier.

The collapse of reinforced concrete (RC) frame buildings is mainly caused by the failure of columns. To prevent brittle failure of RC column, numerous studies have been conducted on the seismic performance of strengthened RC columns. Concrete jacketing method, which is one of the retrofitting method of RC members, can enhance strength and stiffness of original RC column with enlarged section and provide uniformly distributed lateral load capacity throughout the structure. The experimental studies have been conducted by many researchers to analyze seismic performance of seismic strengthened RC column. However, structures which have plan and vertical irregularities shows torsional behavior, and therefore it causes large deformation on RC column when subjected to seismic load. Thus, test results from concentric cyclic loading can be overestimated comparing to eccentric cyclic test results, In this paper, two kinds of eccentric loading pattern was suggested to analyze structural performance of RC columns, which are strengthened by concrete jacketing method with new details in jacketed section. Based on the results, it is concluded that specimens strengthened with new concrete jacketing method increased 830% of maximum load, 150% of maximum displacement and changed the failure modes of non-strengthened RC columns.
This paper proposed a novel form of reinforced concrete (RC) shear wall confined with boundary columns. The structural effect of applying steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) in the wall-column systems was studied. Three full-scale wall samples were constructed including two RC wall-RC column samples with different stirrup ratios and one RC wall-SFRC column sample. Low frequency cyclic testing was carried out to investigate the failure modes, hysteretic behavior, load-bearing capacity, ductility, stiffness degradation and energy dissipation. ABAQUS models were set up to simulate the structural behavior of tested samples, and good agreement was achieved between numerical simulation and experimental results. A further supplementary parametric study was conducted based on ABAQUS models. Both experimental and numerical results showed that increasing stirrup ratio in boundary columns did not affect much on load bearing capacity or stiffness degradation of the system. However, applying SFRC in boundary columns showed significant enhancement on load bearing capacity. Numerical simulation also shows that the structural performances of RC wall-SFRC column system were comparable to a wall-column system fully with SFRC.

The effect of end restraints for adjoining members is the different variables influencing the column ultimate strength and the behavior. The propose of this study is to analyze eccentrically loaded reinforced concrete columns with the end restraind effect having rectangular cross-section and general boundary conditions. Accordingly, this investigation are to construct a typical analytical model of the reinforced concrete columns with general end boundary conditions. The mechanical components of the analytical model are to be rationally defined the actual behavior as possible, and the different variables influencing the behavior and the ultimate strength of the reinforced concrete columns are investigated by using a parametric study.

A finite element model (FEM) for predicting early-age behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) bridge deck slabs with fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars is presented. In this model, the shrinkage profile of concrete accounted for the effect of surrounding conditions including air flow. The results of the model were verified against the experimental test results, published by the authors. The model was verified for cracking pattern, crack width and spacing, and reinforcement strains in the vicinity of the crack using different types and ratios of longitudinal reinforcement. The FEM was able to predict the experimental results within 6 to 10% error. The verified model was utilized to conduct a parametric study investigating the effect of four key parameters including reinforcement spacing, concrete cover, FRP bar type, and concrete compressive strength on the behavior of FRP-RC bridge deck slabs subjected to restrained shrinkage at early-age. It is concluded that a reinforcement ratio of 0.45% carbon FRP (CFRP) can control the early-age crack width and reinforcement strain in CFRP-RC members subjected to restrained shrinkage. Also, the results indicate that changing the bond-slippage characteristics (sand-coated and ribbed bars) or concrete cover had an insignificant effect on the early-age crack behavior of FRP-RC bridge deck slabs subjected to shrinkage. However, reducing bar spacing and concrete strength resulted in a decrease in crack width and reinforcement strain.
On mesoscopic level, concrete can be treated as a three-phase composite material consisting of mortar, aggregates and interfacial transition zone (ITZ) between mortar and aggregate. A lot of research has confirmed that ITZ plays a crucial role in the mechanical fracture process of concrete. The aim of the present study is to propose a numerical method on mesoscale to analyze the failure mechanism of reinforced concrete (RC) structures under mechanical loading, and then it will help precisely predict the damage or the cracking initiation and propagation of concrete. Concrete is meshed by means of the Rigid Body Spring Model (RBSM) concept, while the reinforcing steel bars are modeled as beam-type elements. Two kinds of RC members, i.e. subjected to uniaxial tension and beams under bending, the fracture process of concrete and the distribution of cracks, as well as the load-deflection relationships are investigated and compared with the available test results. It is found that the numerical results are in good agreement with the experimental observations, indicating that the model can successfully simulate the failure process of the RC members.
Concrete structures may become vulnerable during their lifetime due to several reasons such as degradation of their material properties; design or construction errors; and environmental damage due to earthquake. These structures should be repaired or strengthened to ensure proper performance for the current service load demands. Several methods have been investigated and applied for the strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) structures using various materials. Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforcement is one of the most recent type of material for the strengthening purpose of RC structures. The main objective of the present research is to identify the behavior of reinforced concrete slabs strengthened with FRP bars by using near surface mounted (NSM) technique. Validation study is conducted based on the experimental test available in the literature to investigate the accuracy of finite element models using LS-DYNA to present the behavior of the models. A parametric analysis is conducted on the effect of FRP bar diameters, number of grooves, groove intervals as well as width and height of the grooves on the flexural behavior of strengthened reinforced slabs. Performance of strengthening RC slabs with NSM FRP bars was confirmed by comparing the results of strengthening reinforced slabs with control slab. The numerical results of mid-span deflection and stress time histories were reported. According to the numerical analysis results, the model with three grooves, FRP bar diameter of 10 mm and grooves distances of 100 mm is the most ideal and desirable model in this research. The results demonstrated that strengthening of reinforced concrete slabs using FRP by NSM method will have a significant effect on the performance of the slabs.
In this study, reinforced dual concrete beam (RDC beam) composed of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) in the tension part and normal strength concrete (NSC) in the compression and remaining part is proposed. It is the epochal structural system that improves the overall structural performances of beam by partially superseding the steel fiber reinforced concrete in the lower tension part of conventional reinforced concrete beam (RC beam). Flexural and shear tests are performed to prove the structural excellence of RDC beam in comparison with RC beam. An analytical method is proposed to understand the flexrual behavior and is compared to experimental results. And for shear behavior, experimental results are compared to empirical equations predicting the ultimate shear strength of full-depth fiber reinforced concrete beam to examine the behavior of RDC beam under shear. From this studies, it is proved that RDC beam has more superior structural performance than RC beam, and the analytical method for flexural behavior agrees well with experimental results, and the partial-depth fiber reinforcements have no noticeable effect on ultimate shear strength but it is considerably effective to control and prevent evolutions of crack.
The use of reinforced concrete (RC) shear walls (SW) as an efficient lateral load-carrying system has gained recent attention. However, creating openings in RC shear walls is unavoidable due to architectural requirements. This reduces the walls' strength and stiffness, resulting in the development of wall piers. In this study, the cyclic behavior of RC shear walls with openings, reinforced with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets in various patterns, was numerically investigated. Finite element analysis (FEA) using ABAQUS software was employed. Additionally, the retrofitting of sub-standard buildings (5, 10, and 15-story structures) designed based on the old and new versions of the Iranian Code of Practice for Seismic-Resistant Structures was evaluated. Nonlinear static analyses, specifically pushover analyses, were conducted on the structures. The best pattern of CFRP wrapping was determined and utilized for retrofitting the sub-standard structures. Various structural parameters, such as load-carrying capacity, ductility, stress contours, and tension damage contours, were compared to assess the efficiency of the retrofit solution. The results indicated that the load-carrying capacity of the sub-standard structures was lower than that of standard ones by 57%, 69%, and 67% for 5, 10, and 15-story buildings, respectively. However, the retrofit solution utilizing CFRP showed promising results, enhancing the capacity by 10-25%. The retrofitted structures demonstrated increased yield strength, ultimate strength, and ductility through CFRP wrapping and effectively prevented wall slipping.

This paper studies the lateral response of reinforced concrete columns strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymer sheet (CFRP) subjected to static loading analytically by comparing with experimental results. For interface behavior between RC columns and CFRP, and interface element in FEM was applied and verified its performance by analyzing lateral behavior of RC columns strengthened with CFRP. The comparison shows that the proposed analytical method is effective for nonlinear analysis of RC columns strengthened CFRP.
