  • Purpose - As the global product network expands through both internationalization and diversification of the multimodal transportation system, corporate strategies have shifted to emphasize the importance of a high value-added international logistics system. To guide policies and strategies to attract relevant industries, this study aims to analyze the location competitiveness of regional logistics distribution center to serve Northeast Asia. Design/methodology - Multi-criteria techniques are considered to offer a promising framework for evaluating decision-making factors. This paper employed an analytic hierarchy process to analyze the hierarchal structure of determinants for selecting the location of a regional logistics distribution center. Adopting both qualitative and quantitative evaluations, this study suggest political implications for a regional logistics distribution center development, such as the direction of political support, service differentiation and infrastructure development. Findings - This study developed a location competitiveness evaluation model, based on the case study of the major port-cities in Northeast Asia. Evaluation model incorporates five factors underpinning 17 components extracted using factor analysis. The results revealed that the logistics factor is the most significant factor for evaluating the competitiveness of a regional logistics distribution center. The remaining factors were market, costs, and services environment. Comparing qualitative and quantitative evaluations, results provide useful insights for a regional logistics distribution center development in Northeast Asia. Originality/value - This study revealed differences between qualitative and quantitative evaluations. The finding implies that prior works on evaluation models of competitiveness has not successfully measured the gap between quantitative data and expert' evaluations. To overcome this limitation, this paper considered both actual data such as actual distance, cost, the number of companies located, and expert opinions.

  • This study found that was done to find the commercial and physical distribution system of the agricultural physical distribution center of the agricultural co-operation and considers the receipt region of agricultural, livestock and marine products of the agricultural physical distribution center established for the efficiency and integration of physical distribution by season. And this study clarified the relationship between regional characteristics and regional types of distribution in accordance with the sales of each product. According to the research, the agricultural physical distribution center of Cheongju agricultural co-operation receives agricultural, livestock and marine products from all over the country as the core region in Chungcheongbuk-do and deliveries mainly to some regions in Chungcheongbuk-do, Chungcheongnam-do and Daejeon city. That's e agricultural, livestock and marine products that the agricultural physical distribution center of the agricultural co-operation deals with the required freshness. Therefore, the physical distribution center forms the regional physical distribution system to mainly receive products from the regions where are relatively near the center and to delivery to the nearby region. This delivery of agricultural, livestock and marine product significantly influences the sales strategy as well as the economic principles of demand and supply.

  • As supply chains are globalized, multinational companies are trying to optimize distribution networks using a hub and spoke structure. In this hub and spoke network structure, multinational companies locate regional distribution centers at hub airports, which serve demands in their corresponding regions. Especially when customers put higher priority on the service lead-time, hinterlands of international hub airports become ideal candidate locations for the regional hub distribution centers. By utilizing excellent airport and logistics services from hub airports, regional distribution centers in the hub airports can match supply with demand efficiently. In addition, regional hub distribution centers may increase air cargo volume of each airport, which is helpful in the current extremely competitive airport industry. In this paper, we classified locational preferences into three primary categories including demand, service and risk and applied the analytic hierarchy process methodology to prioritize factors of locational preferences. Primary preference factors include secondary factors. Demand factor contains access to current and prospect markets. Service factor comprises airport and logistics perspectives. Service factor in terms of airport operations includes secondary factors such as airport service and connectivity. Service factor in terms of logistics operations contains infrastructure and logistics operations efficiency. Risk factor consists of country and business risks. We also evaluated competitiveness of Asian hub airports in terms of candidate location for regional hub distribution centers. The candidate hub airports include Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Narita and Incheon. Based on the analytic hierarchy process analysis, we derived strategic implications for hub airports to attract multinational companies' regional hub distribution centers.

  • Many of these studies represent a large scale distribution network with a unified formulation by using defined symbols. This can be evaluated as a valuable progress toward accomplishing of a systematic approach the area of distribution network. Unfortunately. transportation problem and inventory policy applied in these studies have an assumption of using an unique supplier for calculating the transportation cost among each distribution echelon. This assumption can cause many problems such that transportation problem is assumed as linear problem, too many number of distribution center are allowed to operate and many more. In order to overcome above unrealistic problems, we developed an algorithm of responding to customers' demand under the refill allowance of same level supply as anew constructional method of inventory distribution network. When backorders are happened in regional distribution center, this algorithm allows transferring finished goods to customer directly from vicinal Regional distribution center instead of existing central distribution center for quick response.

  • The algorithm of customer demand decomposition suggested by this study is a reconstruction method of distribution network under the allowance of same level supply. Regional distribution center(RDC) distributes additional inventories of some of the supplying items to retailers under its charge to reduce the time needed for emergency delivery to neighborhood retailer where backlog happened. This also restrict the purpose of the inventories held by RDC as only regular supply. All of which leads to the creation of more realistic method allowing the affiliation of closing related RDC with one in the vicinity. In this study, the role of RDC is restricted only as supplying items regularity and the conruction of distribution system processing through the closing by consideration of the possibility of supplying retailers from the RDC in the vicinity is discussed.

  • In this paper, we suggest a new backorder policy for stockout which is occurred in each regional distribution centers of distribution chain for capital-goods product. In backorder process of backorder policy, minimize expected stockout through the balancing-division module, and has occured stockout is backordering through the emergency supply from central distribution center and regional distribution center. Simulation tests show that our backorder policy is on the decrease of backorder cost and improvement of customer service. Our backorder policy has two important benefit. First, customer service level is improved by realization of minimum stockout. Second, the backorder process by allowance of the same level supply is to decrease system operating cost.

  • Kimpo international airport logistics complex had been the most busiest airfreight gateway in Korea during last century but, after the grand open of Incheon international airport in 2001, it had lost its major role as a national airfreight hub facilities. However, owing to its locational advantages in Seoul metropolitan area. Kimpo airport logistics park still acts like an urban logistics distribution center in these days. Caused by the KAC's profit oriented policies, the Kimpo airport logistics park's public function as an urban distribution center might be curtailed in the future. Therefore, several laws and ordinances related to national and regional logistics strategies should be modified to prevent it.

  • Distribution System is considered as the most important part of SCM when the satisfaction of customer demand is considered. This paper focus on the backorder policies for stockout which is occurred in each regional distribution center of two-echelon distribution system facing stochastic demand process. Four concepts for the efficient system operation are suggested. First, at least 30% reduction of stockout is achieved by introduction of 50/25 allocation policy to distribution system. Second, transportation cost and lead-time of backorder are decreased by allowance of internal supply between regional distribution centers. Third, the frequency of emergency supply is minimized by application of Ship-up-to- expected-demand backorder policies. Finally we suggest several effective rules to select multi-internal suppliers. Simulation tests show the efficiency of our backorder policies and enhancement of customer service level.

  • As the resolution of climate change scenario data applied with regional models increased, Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) was established around major climate-related organizations to jointly operated and manage large-scale climate data. ESGF developed standard software to provide model output, observation data management, dissemination, and analysis using Peer to Peer (P2P) computing technology. Roles of each institution were divided into index and data nodes. Therefore, ESGF data node was established at APEC Climate Center in Korea on behalf of Asia to share data on climate change scenarios of CORDEX-East Asia (CORDEX-EA) to study climate changes in Eastern Asia. Climate researchers are expected to play a large role in researching causes of global warming and responding to climate change by providing CORDEX-EA regional model data to the world through ESGF data node.
