  • A region merging technique is suggested in this paper for the segmentation of high-spatial resolution imagery. It employs a region growing scheme based on the region adjacency graph (RAG). The proposed algorithm uses directional neighbor-line average feature vectors to improve the quality of segmentation. The feature vector consists of 9 components which includes an observation and 8 directional averages. Each directional average is the average of the pixel values along the neighbor line for a given neighbor line length at each direction. The merging coefficients of the segmentation process use a part of the feature components according to a given merging coefficient order. This study performed the extensive experiments using simulation data and a real high-spatial resolution data of IKONOS. The experimental results show that the new approach proposed in this study is quite effective to provide segments of high quality for the object-based analysis of high-spatial resolution images.

  • In this paper, an adaptive trust region method based on the conic model for unconstrained optimization problems is proposed and analyzed. We establish the global and super linear convergence results of the method. Numerical tests are reported that confirm the efficiency of the new method.

  • Korea is located in either low or moderate seismicity continental region. It is realized that design codes and underlying design concepts of high seismicity region may not be appropriate to low or moderate seismicity region. In this paper, test results on the seismic response of structures without seismic detailing are reexamined and compared with numerical analysis results. The seismic design concept based on limited ductility is proposed as an alternative seismic design approach in moderate seismicity regions.

  • Based on the variation of strain along the cross section, any region in a structural member can be classified into two regions namely, Bernoulli's region (B-region) and Disturbed region (D-region). Since the variation of strain along the cross section for a B-region is linear, well-developed theories are available for their analysis and design. On the other hand, the design of D-region is carried out based on thumb rules and past experience due to the presence of nonlinear strain distribution. Strut-and-Tie method is a novel approach that can be used for the analysis and design of both B-region as well as D-region with equal importance. The strut efficiency factor (${\beta}_s$) is needed for the design and analysis of concrete members using Strut and Tie method. In this paper, equations for finding ${\beta}_s$ for bottle shaped struts in concrete deep beams (a D-region) with and without steel fibres are developed. The effects of transverse reinforcement on ${\beta}_s$ are also considered. Numerical studies using commercially available finite element software along with limited amount of experimental studies were used to find ${\beta}_s$.

  • A 5-year old female shih-tzu referred to the veterinary Teaching Hospital, College of Veterinary Medicine, Konkuk University. The patient was presented with a mass of ventral to pubic region and intraperineal region. CBC, chemistry, x-ray, fine needle aspiration, biopsy and MRI was performed. The dog was definitively diagnosed as lipoma based on cytologic and histopathologic examination. In order to remove the mass, an approach with two direction was made. First, intraperineal region was removed about 40%, and then ventral to pubic was removed the remainder. And inserted penrose drain for obliterate dead space to prevent the accumulation of serous discharge. The dog is clinically normal and being monitored for development of any abnormal signs for the time being. In this case, diagnostic MRI was very useful procedure. it revealed accurate location of a lipoma and useful manner for decision of surgical approach to remove.

  • A fuzzy approach using an EM algorithm for image classification is presented. In this study, a double compound stochastic image process is assumed to combine a discrete-valued field for region-class processes and a continuous random field for observed intensity processes. The Markov random field is employed to characterize the geophysical connectedness of a digital image structure. The fuzzy classification is an EM iterative approach based on mixture probability distribution. Under the assumption of the double compound process, given an initial class map, this approach iteratively computes the fuzzy membership vectors in the E-step and the estimates of class-related parameters in the M-step. In the experiments with remotely sensed data, the MRF-based method yielded a spatially smooth class-map with more distinctive configuration of the classes than the non-MRF approach.

  • A handover for DVB-H(Digital Video Broadcasting for Handheld) is the action of switching a receiver from receiving one signal to receiving another, when moving between the border of their coverage areas. This paper proposes new approaches for improving loss-free handover performance in the DVB-H networks. The proposed handover schemes are targeted to two different DVB-H receivers: One is for the receivers equipped with GPS devices. The other is for ones without GPS support. The first handover approach modifies the cell description table(CDT) proposed in the literature[1]. The second proposes a novel handover region estimation technique based on a new handover map table(HMT). This new handover approach estimates a predefined hand over region described in the HMT using measured RSSIs signal patterns. The estimation success rate is simulated and the benefits of the proposed method are discussed considering time and power consumption.

  • This study examined the relationships among resources demands financial management behavior and financial satisfaction of housewives based on the systems approach. The data were collected from 212 housewives living in Pusan and Kyungnam region by the self-administered questionnaire. The major findings of this study were as follows: (1) the communication frequency of husbands and wives was an important factor affecting financial satisfaction; (2) the perceived financial status such as comparison to reference groups and aspiration for financial status in the future had an influence on financial satisfaction as well as the objective variables such as monthly living costs and monthly savings; and (3)financial satisfaction was also affected by financial management behavior. These findings imply that the financial management program focusing on the ways to increase communication among family members and to implement financial behavior effectively should be developed.

  • Encoding of segment contours is a critical part of a region-based coding system especially at low bit rates where the contour information occupies a majority of the bit rate. When approximating contours with polygons, a fixed upper bound on the distortion is set for the approximation process. Instead of using this fixed bound, adaptive approximation bound for a lossy coding of contourts is proposed in this paper. A function representing the relative importance of the contour segmentis defined to take into account the spatial content of the image. By using this function, the contour can be approximated adaptively. This allows a more general approach than the methods with the fixed distortion measure. The effectiveness of the adaptive contour coding approach is verified through experiments.

  • The fatigue life is predicted on tensile-shear spot weldment made from Al-Mg alloy sheet with thickness of 0.8mm using Mitchell's method and uniform material law by $B{\ddot{a}}umel$ and Seeger based on local strain approach. The fatigue properties of critical HAZ region are estimated from the tensile property using simple hardness method. To predict the fatigue life of spot weldment, the local stresses and strains at the potential critical region are estimated by Neuber's rule. The predicted fatigue life based on uniform material law using HAZ's material properties provides good results within a factor of 3, conservatively.
