  • In order to reduce flood damage, it is necessary to build up comprehensive flood control, including structural and non-structural countermeasures. In this paper, the decision making factors of individual refuge activities which are major non-structural activities to save peoples, lives against flood have been estimated based on questionnaire survey. Furthermore, in order to effective flood countermeasures, the refuge place and its distance are analyzed by questionnaire survey in the flooded area caused by typhoon RUSA and MEAMI. The refuge running time was assessed by its simulation. As a result of the simulation, it was found that the refuge running time is effected by refuge distance and the family numbers for refuge.

  • This paper analyzes the relation between fire shutters and fire spread by conducting fire simulation on inner space with fire shutters. Using Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS), a commercial fire simulation software, the simulation is done on an ideal inner robby, where fire size and the open/close of fire shutters are varied. Our simulation environment can derive significant fire parameters such as temperature variation of fire room walls and entrances of refuge stairs, variation of carbon dioxide, and soot spread. According to the simulation results, temperature and carbon dioxide distribution in refuge stairs have little dependence on vent open or close, but the part close of fire shutters blocks soot inflow to refuge stairs.

  • The purpose of this study was to improve the refuge safety area in the high-rise building type. Each simulation was conducted to evaluate the performance of three types in improving the refuge safety area. Targeting the first 63 floors (no refuge safety area), secondly, to target up to the $30^{th}$ floor (refuge safety area on the $30^{th}$ floor, $47^{th}$ floor) specified in domestic laws, and finally, the $20^{th}$ floor (evacuation safety area on the $20^{th}$ floor, $42^{th}$ floor) were considered as targets. Through this analysis, the following results were obtained : The floor for the refuge safety area through simulations showed that the evacuation time is low. It is necessary to improve the floor for the refuge safety area by using the characteristics of the domestic fire fighting vehicle. The first floor for the refuge safety area from the ground floor differs according to the distance and height of the building floor. However, in the case of a business facility it is 15F, and in the case of apartment housing, it is 20F.

  • The study aims at analyzing an underground station refuge model using EXODUS, one of the refuge simulation programs. The model for simulation is the Daegu Subway (Joongang-ro station). The details of the accident are referred to as the simulation condition the refuge time of traveling from the $3^{rd}$ basement platform to the $1^{st}$ basement is mainly calculated, with passengers numbering 1,000 including 329 at car 1079, 320 at car 1080, and 360 who are not on board. Reference data is used to set up the position of passengers. CFAST fire simulator is also used, and a fast curve among the $t^2$ growth curves, selected as fire growth scenario. The zone is divided into a total of 24 including 18 at the $3^{rd}$ basement platform and 6 at the $2^{nd}$ basement the $1^{st}$ basement is excluded in the fire simulation, however.

  • It is necessary to build countermeasure for the reduction of flood damage, such as the analysis of shelter activities of local residents and the publishment of flood informations. The control factors for mental refuge activity by the questionnaire survey were classified and estimated into two categories: internal and external ones. Furthermore, the optimal time for refuse activities related to flood risk was derived by hydraulic simulation. The shelter activities considering inundation depth will serve citizen's consensus by exercise, it would aid to support the activities to minimize flood victims.

  • In the case of office buildings, domestic and Chinese evacuation laws were compared regarding the evacuation of horizontal and vertical buildings and evacuation to refuge safety areas. A simulation was conducted based on a refuge safety area in China. In the case of evacuating 1 floor, there was no significant difference in the flow of occupants to an ancillary room area in a domestic or Chinese building, but in China, the corridor width was narrower and the occupants have saw a long. In the case of evacuating 15 floors, the flow of occupants to an ancillary room area was different. In the case of China, it was possible for occupants to enter the ancillary room more quickly because the ancillary room area was wider than those found in domestic buildings, allowing quickly passage the ancillary room door. The results of this study found that if corridor width and ancillary room area were wider, evacuation times could be reduced.

  • In this study, the evacuation training were performed in a high school building in Cheong-Ju and compared with the simulation program (Simulex). Also numerical analysis of room fire in school building was conducted by fire model (FDS, CFAST) and evaluated the available safe egress time for the safety assessment. As a result, the 8% of total egress persons were failed to escape at evacuation training and 40% of total egress persons were failed to escape at Simutex simulation. Simutex program was not reflected the real escape conditions, such as evacuation route, refuge place, etc.

  • The objective of this study is to verify the safety in case of fire and change of residential environment for different wall construction approaches in a stairways apartment house. In order to confirm that case_1, which is current case that most of wall is opened and the case 2, which upper part of wall is limitedly opened are compared and analyzed based on simulations of fire, escape and natural ventilation performance. The analysis reveals that possible escape time for case 1 was more than 600 seconds and for case 2 was 195 seconds. Since the escape times for both cases were over 128 seconds, it would be reasonable to assume that every resident would escape. The simulation results on natural ventilation performance shows the air change per hour of case 1 and case 2 were .19n/h and .16n/h and there was 1.2 times difference. However, the difference was too insignificant and it could be seen as that different approaches on wall construction would not significantly influence on natural ventilation performance.

  • Most of the Historic Preservation Areas are very weak to fire disasters. The aim of this study is to build a proposal-scheme for evacuation routes planning at a large-scale disaster in a historic preservation area. The study area is a preservation area called "Hizen-Hama-Shuku" which has many straw-roofed wooden houses in Kashima city, Japan. To achieve this aim, outline of the scheme is discussed. The proposal-scheme of evacuation routes consists of objectives to propose, target time to evacuate for the refuge place, evaluation method, and procedures. The existing condition and the measures are evaluated using the software "SimTread".
