The effect of inclination angle on the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of the brazed aluminum heat exchangers is experimentally investigated. Three samples having different fin pitches(1.25, 1.5 and 2.0 mm) were tested. Results show that heat transfer coefficient is not affected by the inclination angle. However, the friction factor increases as the inclination angle increases with negligible difference between the forward and backward inclination. Both the heat transfer coefficient and the friction factor are the smallest at $F_p=1.5mm$, followed by $F_p=2.0mm$ and 1.25mm. Possible explanation is provided considering the louver layout. Comparison with existing correlations is also made.
During hot and humid weather, air-conditioners consume a large amount of electricity due to the large amount of latent heat. Simultaneous usage of a dehumidifier may reduce latent heat and reduce electricity consumption. In this study, dehumidification performance was measured for a small-sized dehumidification rotor made of inorganic fiber impregnated with metallic silicate within a constant temperature and humidity chamber. Regeneration to dehumidification depends on ratio, rotor speed, room temperature, regeneration temperature, room relative humidity and frontal velocity to the rotor. Results demonstrate an optimum area ratio (1/2), rotor speed (1.0 rpm), and regeneration temperature ($100^{\circ}C$) to achieve a dehumidification rate of 0.0581 kg/s. As the area ratio increases, the optimum rotation speed and the optimum regeneration temperature also increase. Above the optimum rotor speed, incomplete regeneration reduces dehumidification. Above the optimum regeneration temperature, increased temperature variation between regeneration and dehumidification reduces dehumidification. Dehumidification rate also increases with an increase of relative humidity, dehumidification temperature and flow velocity into the rotor.
Heat transfer rate can be increased by increasing the heat transfer area. In this study, wide louver fin-and-tube heat exchangers with $P_t/P_l=1.03$ were tested and compared with louver fin-and-tube heat exchanger with $P_t/P_l=0.6$. Results show that heat transfer capacities of wide louver samples are larger (9.8% at one row, 13.6% at two row and 4.1% at three row) than those of conventional louver samples. Considering the area ratio of 1.78, the increase of heat transfer capacity is rather small, possibly due to the smaller heat transfer coefficient and fin efficiency of the wide louver sample. The j factor of the louver fin was 67% larger at one row, 42% larger at two row and 52% larger at three row. The f factor of the louver fin was 81% larger at one row, 63% larger at two row and 60% larger at three row. The effect of fin pitch on j and f factors are not pronounced and the j factor decreased as the number of tube row increased.
The heat transfer performance of heating medium oil fluidized bed heat exchanger was measured. The operation variables were air flow rate, air inlet temperature, moisture content, water flow rate and water inlet temperature. The outside heat transfer coefficient was determined from the heat exchanger experiment and its experimental correlation was determined as a function of air velocity and viscosity of heating medium oil. Effect of viscosity was well agreed with the previous studies. Errors of the correlation equation was less than about 10% for outside heat transfer coefficient developed in this study when compared with the measured value. Hot water with the temperature greater than $77^{\circ}C$ could be produced by using the heating medium oil fluidized bed heat exchanger.
Commercial buildings account for a significant proportion of the total building energy use in Korea, and cooling energy, in turn, accounts for the largest proportion of total energy consumption in commercial buildings. Under this circumstance, chiller staging is considered to be a reasonable and practical solution for cooling energy saving. In this study, the part-load ratio and the operating characteristics of a vapor compression chiller were analysed within an office building. In addition, energy consumption among different chiller staging schemes was comparatively analysed. As a result, significant proportions of total operating hours, cooling load and energy consumption turned out to be in the part load ratio range from 0% through 50%, and thus energy consumption was significantly affected by the chiller COP at low part-load conditions, indicating that the chiller operation at the part-load is an important factor in commercial buildings. In addition, utilizing a sequential chiller staging scheme can reduce the annual cooling energy usage by more than 10.3% compared to operating a single chiller.
The purpose of this study is to make an analysis of influence on the cooling capacity and COP of a desiccant cooling system with a regenerative evaporative cooler when a direct evaporative cooler was applied to the inlet of regeneration process of this system. We used cycle simulation in order to analyze the performance of this system. From the cycle simulation, we knew that the optimal rotation time of desiccant rotor was between 160s and 220s and hardly ever affected cooling capacity of desiccant cooling system when this system was operated at the outdoor air condition of $35^{\circ}$ and 40% RH and low regeneration temperature of $60^{\circ}$. Also there was optimal area ratio of regeneration to dehumidification between 0.7 and 1.0. Our results showed that it had a small effect on the system’s cooling capacity to install direct evaporative cooler at the inlet of regeneration process.
The thermal contact resistance (TCR) is one of the important resistance components in cryogenic systems. Cryogenic measurement devices using a cryocooler can be affected by TCR because the device has to consist of several metal components that are in contact with each other for heat transfer to the specimen without a cryogen. Therefore, accurate measurement and understanding of TCR is necessary for the design of cryogenic measurement devices using a cryocooler. The TCR occurs at the interface between metals and it can be affected by variable factors, such as the roughness of the metal surface, the contact area and the contact pressure. In this study, we designed a TCR measurement system at variable temperature using a cryocooler as a heat sink. Copper was selected as a specimen in the experiment because it is widely used as a heat transfer medium in cryogenic measurement devices. We measured the TCR between Cu and Cu for various temperatures and contact pressures. The effect of the interfacial materials on the TCR was also investigated.
This study looks into changing building energy use by application of phase change material (PCM). PCM does not need extra energy for operation and is used for reducing building energy use and, CO2 output by displaying semi-permanent effects after installation. It also is able to avoid the maximum electric power time-zone by inducing a time lag phenomenon of cooling and heating loads with high thermal capacity using latent heat. To verify the efficiency of blinds and PCM, tests about the PCM operation mechanism using air conditioning machinery and nocturnal panel cooling were done. In the test results of the case using PCM installation, a $45^{\circ}$ blind angle with machinery air conditioning and nocturnal panel cooling at the same time shows a 22 percent energy saving effect against general space. The test results of each case were compared and analyzed based on the blind and window opening settings. Finally, the energy reduction of existing buildings using PCM application was reviewed based on the final measurement results.
This paper presents a numerical study on the constrained melting of a phase change material inside various capsule containers, using water and HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) as a PCM and a capsule material, respectively. The computations are based on an iterative, finite-volume numerical procedure that incorporates a single-domain enthalpy formulation for simulation of the phase change phenomenon. Using the enthalpy method, various capsule configurations, such as a capsule from E company, an isochoric cylinder capsule, an equivalent diameter sphere capsule, and an isochoric sphere capsule, are used to investigate the effect of capsule configurations on the charging and discharging performance. A transient three-dimensional model is used for each case. The simulation results show that the capsule from E company results in a higher melting and solidification rate of the PCM, than the other capsule configurations considered in this research.
In the nuclear power plant, emergency core coolant system (ECCS) is furnished at reactor coolant system (RCS) in order to cool down high temperature water in case of emergency. However, in this coolant system, thermal stratification phenomenon can occur due to coolant leaking in the check valve. The thermal stratification produces excessive thermal stresses at the pipe wall so as to yield thermal fatigue crack (TFC) accident. In the present study, effects of turbulence penetration on the thermal stratification into T-branches with square cross-section in the modeled ECCS are analysed numerically. $textsc{k}$-$\varepsilon$ model is employed to calculate the Reynolds stresses in momentum equations. Results show that the length and strength of thermal stratification are primarily affected by the leak flow rate of coolant and the Reynolds number of the main flow in the duct. Turbulence penetration into the T-branch of ECCS shows two counteracting effects on the thermal stratification. Heat transport by turbulence penetration from the main duct to leaking flow region may enhance thermal stratification while the turbulent diffusion may weaken it.
