The water jet impingement cooling with boiling is one of the techniques to remove heat from high heat flux equipments. The configuration of surface roughness is one obvious condition of affecting the performance on heat transfer in nucleate boiling, The present study investigates the water jet impinging single-phase convection and nucleate boiling heat transfer for the effect of surface roughness to enhance the heat transfer in free surface and submerged jet. The distributions of the averaged wall temperature as well as the boiling curves are discussed. Jet velocities are varied from 0.65 to 1.7 m/s. Surface roughness by sand blast and sand paper varies from 0.3 to 2.51 ${\mu}m$ and cavity shapes on surface are semi-circle and v-shape, respectively The results showed that higher velocity of the jet caused the boiling incipience to be delayed more. The incipient boiling and heat transfer increase with increasing surface roughness due to a large number of cavities of uniform size.
The present paper deals with heating energy estimation in Korean-style apartments, paying special attention to the effect of room condition settings. Two types of heating modes are considered: continuous single-zone and scheduled multi-zone. In the latter, zones during unoccupied periods remain unconditioned. Also analyzed are sensitivities in heating energy with respect to the air change rate and the set temperature. The energy use is estimated with TRNSYS 15, a dynamic load calculation program. Heating energy for the actual residential condition (1.0 ACH and $24^{\circ}C$) appears to be nearly the same as that for a typical design standard (1.5 ACH and $20^{\circ}C$). The air change rate affects heating energy as sensitive]y as the set temperature. For all the simulated cases, the scheduled multi-zone heating mode is more energy-efficient than the continuous single-zone. Heating energy depends appreciably on the shading factor. It is expected that considerable heating energy for apartment houses can be saved by employing a multi-zone mode along with appropriate control devices.
Air side heat transfer and pressure drop for fin-tube heat exchanger with wave and wave-slit fins were measured for various fin spacings and number of tube rows. Outer diameter of the tube including fin collar is 10.07mm, and experiments were done with dry surface condition. Longitudinal and transverse tube spacings of the heat exchangers are 21.65mm and 25mm respectively, and wave depth of the wave fin is 2mm. Experiments were conducted for 1, 2 and 3 rows and 3 different fin spacings, 1.3, 1.5 and 1.7mm. An attempt was made to demonstrate advantage of the enhanced fins over the plane fin by introducing the concept of fan power, Effect of the number of tube rows on heat transfer was discussed in connection with general mechanisms of heat transfer enhancement for fin-tube heat exchanger. Also the effect of hydrophilic coating was investigated. Lastly, correlations for Colburn j-factor and friction factor were developed.

This research is concerned with the enhancement of heat transfer by surfactant added to the aqueous solution of LiBr. Different vertical tubes were tested with and without an additive of normal octyl alcohol. The test tubes are a bare tube, a groove tube, a corrugated tube and a spring-inserted tube. The additive concentration is about 0.08 mass%. The heat transfer coefficient is measured as a function of the film Reynolds number in the range of 20~200. Experiments are carried out at higher cooling water temperature of $35^{\circ}C$to simulate an air cooling condition for several kinds of absorber testing tubes. The experimental results with and without surfactant are compared. The enhancement of heat transfer by Marangoni convection effect which is generated by addition of the surfactant is observed in each test tube. Especially, it is clarified that the tube with an spring-inserted has the enhancement effect.
A numerical analysis is carried out to study the two-dimensional steady state natural convection from vertical wires immersed in cold pure water. The surface of the wire is $0^{\circ}C$ unifrom temperature. Results of the analysis are presented for free stream temperature from $0^{\circ}C$ to $25^{\circ}C$ and the aspect ratio N from $5.26{\times}10^{-3}$ to $1.0{\times}10^{-3}$. The effects of the density extremum and aspect ratio on the flow pattern and the heat transfer characteristics are discussed As the aspect ratio N becomes larger, in the range of $1.0^{\circ}C{\leq}T_{\infty}{\leq}4.4^{\circ}C$ and $6{^{\circ}C}{\leq}T_{\infty}{\leq}17^{\circ}C$, the effect of Pr number on the heat transfer is shown to be more significant than the aspect ratio. Investigating into the effect of the density extremum on the heat transfer from wires, the new heat transfer correlations are suggested with the relation of average Nu mumber vs. modified Ra number. Here, the coefficient values C of correlations are presented as the function of density extremum parameter $R^*$. The effects of the density extremum parameter are also discussed.
Reinforcement of insulation in apartment buildings reduces the heating and cooling energy consumption by lowering the heat transfer in the building envelope. There are differences between internal and external insulation methods in heat transmission properties. However, some building load calculation programs cannot analysis the differences between the two. This is because these programs do no account for the timelag or thermal storage effect of the wall according to the location of insulation. In this study, the heat transmission characteristics of internal and external insulation were analyzed by EnergyPlus, and heating and cooling energy demand was compared. The results showed that external insulation system had lower heating and cooling loads than internal insulation system. Also the heat transfer rate of external insulation is steadier than internal insulation. About 13.6% of heating and cooling energy demand decreased when the outdoor wall was finished with external insulation compared to the demand with internal insulation.
Thermal and flow modeling and fin structure optimization were performed to reduce the weight of an electrical device with a staggered fin. First, a numerical model for thermal and flow characteristics was suggested, and then, the model was verified experimentally. Using the verified model, improvement in cooling performance of the cooling system through the staggered fins was predicted. As a result, 87.5% of total heat generated was dissipated through the cooling fins, and a thermal island was observed in the rotor because of low velocity of the internal air flow through the air gap. In addition, it was confirmed that the staggered fin improves the cooling performance but it also increases the total pressure drop within the cooling system, by maximizing the leading edge effect. Based on this analysis result, the effect of each design parameter on the thermal and flow characteristics was analyzed to select the main optimal design parameters, and multi-objective optimization was performed by considering the cooling performance and the fin weight. In conclusion, the optimized fin structure improved the cooling performance by 7% and reduced the fin weight by 28% without any compromise of the pressure drop.
The effect of the gap width on conjugate heat transfer in the cylindrical annulus for an insulated tube has been studied numerically by the finite difference method. The parameters considered here are the Rayleigh number, Ra, the dimensionless insulated wall thickness, $W/D_i$ and the dimensionless gap width, S/W. As S/W increases, the mean wall temperature increases at the inside wall of annulus and decreases at the outside walls of annulus and the insulated tube at $S/W{\leq}0.5$, and then slightly increases at $Re=10^4$, $W/D_i=1.47$. The heat transfer rate decreases at $S/W{\leq}0.5$ and then increases apparently as S/W increases at $Re=10^4$, W/Df=1.47. Therefore, it is considered that $$S/W{\sim_=}0.5$$ is the optimum gap width for the effect of insulation at $Re=10^4$, $W/D_f=1.47$.
An experimental study was conducted to investigate the effect of the morphology of CNT (Carbon Nanotube) on the thermal conductivity of suspensions. The effective thermal conductivities of the samples were measured using a steady-state cut bar apparatus method. Enhancements based on the thermal conductivity of the base fluid are presented as functions of both the volume fraction and the temperature. Although functionalized SWNT (Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube) produced more stable and homogeneous suspensions, the addition of small amounts of surfactant to suspensions of 'as produced' SWNT demonstrated a greater increase in effective thermal conductivity than functionalized SWNT alone. The effective thermal conductivity enhancement corresponding to 1.0% by volume approached 10%, which was observed to be lower than expected, but more than twice the values, 3.5%, obtained for similar tests conducted using aluminum oxide suspensions. However, for suspensions of MWNT (Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube), the degree of enhancement was measured to be approximately 37%. It was postulated that the effect of clustering, resulting from the multiple heat-flow passages constituted by interconnecting neighboring CNT clusters, played an important role in significant enhancement of effective thermal conductivity.
A dynamic model has been developed to investigate the operability of a single and double-effect solar energy assisted parallel type absorption chiller. In the study, main components and fluid transport mechanism were modeled. And solar radiation and the solar collector were also modeled along with its control design. The model was run for the single mode with solar energy supply only and the solar/gas driving double effect mode. From the simulation results, it was found that the present configuration of the chiller is not capable of regulating solution flow rates according to variable solar energy input. And the issues of the excessive circulation flow rate and the mismatch between available solar power and cooling load discourages the use of the single mode, but the dual use of gas and solar power is recommendable in view of controllability and enhanced COP.
